Welcoming Speech by Conference Chair,

Good Morning,
Distinguished Guests, Speakers, KSEA members, Friends, and Families, All Welcome to UKC 2006!

I am so pleased to see so many colleagues, professors, friends and families from the US and Korea, all in
one place ! The US-Korea Conference provides a very unique opportunity for all of us.
To my knowledge, this is the only Conference where you can meet colleagues from your own specialty
area, but you can also reunite with your college physics, chemistry or metallurgy professor. Not only that,
you can meet your old high school friends, who are now an aerospace engineer, computer scientist,
biochemist, chairman of a large corporation or even a congressman!

The UKC2006 Organizing Committee members in the US and Korea have worked extremely hard for the
last year to prepare an outstanding conference.
We have attempted to replicate the spirit of the original “Symposium” written by Plato, the great Greek
philosopher. As a result we have prepared many “symposiums” & “forums” to discuss the truth and
beauty of science, technology and education, while celebrating our global friendships.

Your strong support and active participation have made the UKC2006 a record-breaking event. We
have exceeded the total number of papers ever presented and the total number of people ever registered.
The quality of technical programs is world-class, and the spectrum of topics is very current and broad.
Several new Symposiums were added this year, such as AMT, FST, GE, and MST, all make the technical
programming strong and attractive. A few Forums also discuss unique topics such as Education in
Science and Engineering, Women’s Career Issues, and a joint program by NSF/KOSEF for Young
Generation members. KUSCO/KSEA scholarships will also be awarded to students at this Conference.
An impressive roster of distinguished speakers from Korea and the US has been assembled for this
Opening ceremony and plenary sessions.
For the first time this year, UKC is completely on-line. We have successfully managed the whole
conference with a comprehensive on-line process for abstract and paper submission, conference
registration, hotel reservation, and other services.

Generous sponsorships from many industrial companies and research organizations from the US and
Korea have recognized that the US-Korea Conference is an important venue to discuss scientific and
technological collaboration across the Pacific.

Our Local Arrangement Committee consisting of KSEA NY Metro and NJ Chapters, and KASBP
members is committed to provide maximum hospitality. Please feel free to ask questions to committee
members. We are here to serve you.

Enjoy your participation in the UKC2006 and memorable time visiting the NY Metropolitan area. We
hope you return next year with even more colleagues for UKC 2007!

Thank you. Have a wonderful day.

Sung-Kwon Kang, Ph. D.
