Unmanned Underwater Vehicles

By: Sean Berrios

1
Background Information More
ROVs & AUVs

 First created in 1957

 Used for Commercial, Military and Intelligence
purposes
 Vary in size from really small to extra large

2
Three Types of UUVs

 Screw Driven AUV

Chart Title
 First UUV ever created in year 1957 and lasted
until 2001
30000
 Battery life maximum of a little over a day,
Could only travel 280 miles. 25000

 Underwater Gliders 20000

 First created in 1999 still used today 15000 24850

 Can dive to depths of 6000m, travel for 10000
around 40,000km, and can stay underwater
for 6 months. 5000
280
1.5 180
0
 Bionic AUV Screw Underwater
 First model was created in 1994 Driven AUV Gliders

 Can dive to 10m, can swim or crawl Barrery Life (Days) Travel Distance (miles)

3
How They Work ROV
Example

Autonomous Are pre-

Can receive data
programmed on a Fully
Underwater course and not Autonomous
inputs from a data
operator
Vehicles (AUV’s) remotely operated

Remotely Connected by a Can be Can be

series of cables to
Operated be remotely
equipped with substituted to
Vehicle (ROV’s) controlled instruments replace Divers

4
5
What’s Different
About UUVs & Why
They’re Important

 Maintain constant linear

trajectory which results in
more efficient seabed
mapping and sub bottom
profiling
 Can dive to depths of 6000m
 ROV’s can dive deeper than
divers and some are small
enough to fit into areas
divers would be unable to
reach
 Increased safety
 Cost effective

6
What Problems are They Solving

 They are able to find Mines more efficiently than traditional MCM’s without risk to life
 UUV’s are able to survey the ocean floor at a closer distance than any other current
method
 Are able to replace divers in lengthy underwater missions or hazardous conditions
 Give submarines a larger sonar picture

7
Strengths & Weaknesses of UUVs

Strength’s Weaknesses'
Inexpensive Efficient and Safe Can go off track and lack of control in AUVs
can be hard to troubleshoot
Reliable method of creating 3D maps of the Mission success is largely dependent on size
ocean floor of the UUV
Environmental friendly (runs on batteries)
Can explore areas that would otherwise be
inaccessible
No risk to loss of human life

8
 Increased military use
What the Future  Scientific and industrial use

Holds….  Exploration
