Florida’s September Employment Figures Released

www.employflorida.com

TALLAHASSEE – Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September 2010 is 11.9
percent. This represents 1,100,000 jobless out of a labor force of 9,242,000. The unemployment rate
is marginally higher than the revised August rate of 11.8 percent.

Florida’s total nonagricultural employment in September 2010 is 7,208,300, representing a decline of

11,100 jobs (-0.2 percent) over the month. Florida’s annual job growth rate is up 0.4 percent,
representing an increase of 27,200 jobs from September 2009. It is the third consecutive month the
state is showing positive over-the-year job growth after losing jobs for three years. Nationally, the
number of jobs is up 0.3 percent over the year.

“As the nation slowly emerges from the economic recession, Florida’s workforce partners remain
focused on identifying growth industries and helping to prepare job seekers for current and future
opportunities,” said AWI Director Cynthia R. Lorenzo. “Despite continued fluctuations in unemployment
rates, there are encouraging indicators of recovery in Florida including recent increases in online job
postings and over-the-year job growth. Through our innovative partnerships and programs, Florida’s
workforce system remains committed to ensuring job seekers regain employment as quickly as
possible.”

Increase in Online Job Ads

Online job postings in Florida compiled by the Help Wanted OnLine data series from The Conference
Board totaled 234,618 (seasonally adjusted) jobs in September 2010, up by 2.3% from the 229,358
postings in August 2010. This is the fourth consecutive month of gains in online ads and represents an
over-the-year increase of 63,688 job postings compared to September 2009. Since the official end of
the recession in June 2009, online job demand in Florida has increased by more than 67,000 jobs.

The September 2010 job postings represent the highest level of demand since July 2008, when Help
Wanted OnLine showed 235,425 openings. Florida’s labor demand, measured by online advertised
vacancies, hit its lowest point in January 2009 at 158,178 ads and has been on a largely upward trend
since then.

Domestic Violence Awareness Pilot Project

Governor Charlie Crist last week announced a pilot project to address the employment needs of
survivors of domestic violence, in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in
Florida. The pilot project, funded by Workforce Florida in partnership with AWI, the Florida Coalition
Against Domestic Violence and Suncoast Workforce, which serves job seekers in Sarasota and
Manatee counties, will assist survivors who need help finding new or better jobs to ensure self-
sufficiency. For more information on the pilot project, please visit

Assisting Veterans
Three of the state’s One-Stop Career Centers were recently recognized for providing innovative job
training and placement services to Florida’s veterans. The Escarosa Career Center in Pensacola, Polk
Works One-Stop Center in Bartow and Workforce Plus in Tallahassee shared the annual $99,000
incentive award provided under the federal Jobs for Veterans Act. Funds will be used to encourage the
improvement of employment, training and placement services for veterans, and to encourage One-Stop
Career Centers to strive for superior performance in all areas of service delivery for veterans.

Florida’s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

 The number of jobs in Florida is 7,208,300 in September 2010, up by 27,200 jobs compared to a
year ago. This is the third annual increase in jobs since the state started losing jobs in July 2007.
The industry gaining the most jobs is private education and health services (+39,200 jobs, +3.7
percent).
 Other industries gaining jobs include: professional and business services (+15,400 jobs, +1.5
percent); trade, transportation, and utilities (+13,600 +0.9 percent); leisure and hospitality (+2,800
jobs, +0.3 percent); and other services (+2,200 jobs, +0.7 percent).
 These industry job gains are partially due to increases in ambulatory health care services;
computer systems design; clothing and accessory stores; amusement, gambling, and recreation;
and membership associations and organizations.
 The industries losing jobs over the year include: financial activities (-11,500 jobs, -2.4 percent);
construction (-10,700 jobs, -2.9 percent); manufacturing (-9,600 jobs, -3.1 percent); total
government (-8,100 jobs, -0.7 percent); and information (-6,000 jobs, -4.3 percent).
 These industry job losses are partially due to weakness in credit intermediation; construction of
buildings; fabricated metal product manufacturing; local government; and telecommunications.

Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

 In September 2010, Liberty County has the state’s lowest unemployment rate (7.0 percent);
followed by Walton County (7.9 percent); Okaloosa County (8.0 percent); Alachua and Leon

counties (8.2 percent each); and Jackson County (8.5 percent). Most of the counties with the
lowest unemployment rates are those with relatively high proportions of government employment.
 Hendry County (20.2 percent) has the highest unemployment rate in Florida in September 2010,
followed by Flagler County (16.3 percent); St. Lucie County (15.5 percent); Indian River County
(15.4 percent); and Hardee and Hernando counties (14.8 percent each). Many of the counties with
the highest unemployment rates in the state experienced seasonal slowness in agriculture and
related industries. There were 52 counties with double-digit unemployment rates in September,
unchanged from the previous month.

Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

 Eleven metro areas in the state have over-the-year job gains: Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano
Beach (+2,700 jobs, +0.1 percent); Naples-Marco Island (+1,000 jobs, +1.0 percent); Gainesville
(+900 jobs, +0.7 percent); Panama City-Lynn Haven-Panama City Beach (+400 jobs, +0.6
percent); Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent (+400 jobs, +0.3 percent); Cape Coral-Ft. Myers, Crestview-
Ft. Walton Beach-Destin, Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach, and Tallahassee (+100 jobs,
+0.1 percent each); and North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+100
jobs, less than 0.05 percent each).
 Of the metro areas with job losses, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (-2,400 jobs, -0.2 percent) is
losing the most, followed by Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville (-1,800 jobs, -0.9 percent); and
Lakeland-Winter Haven (-800 jobs, -0.4 percent).

Note: These unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation.

The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from
Florida's Unemployment Compensation tax records and other data.

New procedures recently mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further
