Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time

When the Pennsylvania sexual abuse revelations came out back in August, several people asked that the
Shrine conduct listening sessions on the topic. Fr. Frank and I held four such sessions in September. There
were three points that were repeatedly made by people attending those sessions. First, there is a need for
greater transparency in the Church on policies and procedures pertaining to the prevention of abuse and how
allegations are handled. Second, there is a need for greater financial transparency in the Church. Finally,
don’t forget about the survivors among us. At a minimum, they still need pastoral care, a forum to tell their
histories, and opportunities to heal. In some cases, a measure of justice in the civil and criminal courts is
still pending.

In today’s bulletin, we continue our effort in the area of financial transparency. On pages 4-7 is the
financial audit report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2018. My guess that the percentage of Catholic
Churches who put audited financial statements in the bulletin is less than one percent, and we’re happy to
lead in this area. On the larger issue of transparency on policies and procedures, we know that we still have
work to do. We applaud the Jesuits in their recent efforts in this regard.
