Rice is the worst enemy of mankind

What is the main obstacle of our country's (Bangladesh) development (-prosperity-


improvement-betterment) ? If it is asked, certainly different people will give different
answer. But if you analyze it from the view-point of medical science, then I will say
rice is our worst national enemy. Rice is such a prominent food item which contains
excessive amount of sugar (starch/carbohydrate). So it hastens our physical growth & we
become adult (mature) very quickly. That's why we get married promptly & start having
babies more speedily. Sometimes it seems to me that just a few days ago a guy who
himself was a baby, now he is completely exhausted (-fagged-worn-out) being a father or
grandfather of many children. That means eating rice is the root cause of population
explosion in such a dreadful manner. If you don't believe you can look on the rice-eating
countries, like china-india-indonesia-Bangladesh-thailand-japan-korea, all of them are going
through population problem in the highest degree. For the unimaginable explosion of
population, government become a failure even spending billions of dollar annually to
provide our basic needs like food, cloth, residence, education & health.

Rice not only make us adult (mature) very quickly, but also rapidly converts us to
old guys. As a result we become incompetent (& worthless) for any jobs and turn to a
burden to the family (& thus to the society & country). As because in old age we lack
energy to work & various diseases invade our body & mind. It is true that sugar
(starch/carbohydrate) is the only source of our physical energy & we can not survive
without it. But it is also true that excessive supply of sugar (starch/carbohydrate) is
horribly harmful for us. It can be reasonably compared to water. We all know that
normal water is the root cause of our live & flood (i.e. excess) water causes our death.
In our country almost ninety percent of people found to be have gastric ulcer who visits
doctor. Excessive amount of sugar (starch/carbohydrate) in rice causes flatulency (gas) in
the stomach, gas formation tends to the acidity & acidity leads to ulcer. Perhaps nobody
will deny the fact that rice is the root cause of diabetes (I mean from the imbalance of
carbohydrate produced by rice in our body for many years). You will not find gastric
ulcer & diabetes epidemic in those countries where (wheat) bread is the main food item.
Now I am to say that this poor country has to waste millions of dollars every year to
import the medicines only for this two diseases.

Some may say that most of the medicines of this two diseases are manufactured
in our country. Yea, that's right ; but raw materials, machinery, packing items all are
have to import. There are many pathological test done to diagnose these diseases and
these diagnostic machineries & chemical reagents are also have to import spending lot of
foreign currencies. Yet we can ignore the squandering of invaluable time (working hour)
in the doctor's chamber, hospital & sick-bed. Not only these two diseases but hundreds
of diseases can be named having link with this notorious rice. According to the
physicians, there is no difference between eating a handful of rice & a handful of sugar.
You may say that laziness is the main obstacle in the way of our country's development
rather than rice. Then I will say that rice creates laziness in our body & mind. The
excessive amount of sugar/carbohydrate in rice is the real cause of laziness. As it is
usually seen we become exhausted from least exertion, excessive amount of sugar in rice
is responsible for this situation.

As rice contains immoderate amount of sugar & after eating rice it is digested
quickly & the principal ingredient (sugar) is quickly absorbed in our bloodstream & the
sugar level suddenly become high, so we begin to feel drowsy, weak & lazy like a
diabetic patient. You can say, Japanese (, Chinese & Koreans) are also rice eater & still
they are not lazy (like us); on the contrary they are very much active & hardworking &
they don’t become tired from little labor. Yea, in this regard they got some climatic
advantage. They don’t sweat so much even during hard work because of their cold
weather, as we do. As a result they don’t break-away easily from little labor like us.
Moreover people of Mongolian origin (flat-nose) are anthropologically very much
energetic & industrious. On the contrary we sweat much because of our hot & damp
weather and that’s why we get easily tired, exhausted through losing essential mineral
salts with sweats. So excess sugar in rice & excess sweating both are equally
responsible for our laziness, debility & inactivity. Some pundits oppose that not rice but
excessive eating of rice is injurious to health. But the problem is that rice has such a
peculiar uncontrollable temptation to eat excess that few of us has the power to knock
out such seduction. Contrarily it is very difficult for anybody to eat excess of wheat
bread. As because rice is soft & wet (that's why easy to eat) and wheat bread is hard &
dry.

Somebody may say that poverty is our most vital problem. If you think little
deeply then you will realize that rice is the basic cause of our incurable poverty. As
because if we fill our stomach with rice unto the nose, it will digest & absorbed so
quickly that within two hours we will become hungry again. So we have to eat too
much & our expenditure on food purpose become high & it force us to reduce
expenditure on other fields (like health, education, infrastructure etc) . Look at our
physical strength or (slender) physical structure ; both are ridiculous, pathetic. And the
notorious (black sheep) rice is responsible for this poor status. You will obviously
understand the demerits of rice if you compare the physical structure of rice-eater
Indians, Chinese & Indonesians with wheat-eater Arabian, European & American. You
will certainly notice that players of rice-eating countries can not do much well in the
strenuous games (like football, cricket, marathon, wrestling etc). The reason is same and
that is if we eat rice our blood sugar level (energy) rises to the highest level for a short
time & then it again reduce to an alarmingly lowest position.

On the contrary, if you eat wheat (bread) it will digest steadily taking much time
& that’s why your blood sugar level will not suddenly jump to highest level for a little
while. As a result your calorie/ energy level will remain in standard position
comparatively for longer time. Like rice it does not suddenly rise to the highest level &
then fall to the lowest level. If we do not start eating wheat bread quickly in stead of
rice, then the millions of dollars our government is wasting every year for family
planning, will have to continue for how many years Allah knows ! On the contrary,
governments of the wheat-eater countries (like Middle east, Australia, Europe, America,
Russia etc) are facing failure to increase their population even offering billion dollars
bonus to their couples. Some analyst thinks that poverty & ignorance are responsible for
overpopulation, not rice. If you look at the Arab countries you will see that their
education rate very low & still they are free from overpopulation. And there was no
population problem even (a few decades ago) when they were poor.

Some people think that illiteracy is the main problem in the way of our national
prosperity. In this point we can say that poverty is responsible for illiteracy, over-
population is responsible for poverty & rice is responsible for over-population. Recently
many people are claiming that corruption is our chief national problem. Think in this
way that poverty-illiteracy-unawareness is responsible for corruption & in our country the
primary cause of poverty & illiteracy is overpopulation. Population not being a blessing
rather has become a curse & rice is mainly responsible for this kind of consequence.
Some savant says that Japan is an overpopulated country and still there is no problem as
their people are highly skilled. Really Japan is an exception & exception can not be
taken as a formula. So we have to entirely give up the habit of eating rice from right
now & start having wheat flour bread in order to build a healthy & happy nation.
(Common oat (avena sativa) flour is more healthier than wheat flour. Because one of the
greatest vitamines are usually made from its juice) I know this is a difficult job and it
can not be done overnight but we must try our best.

Another problem is that our women community are more interested in cooking
rice than baking wheat bread. As because cooking rice is very easy but baking wheat
bread is much hard. At the same time women should think that to eat rice we need to
cook many delicious curry but to eat wheat bread these are not essential. Only potato
fry or pulse’s soup is enough. At this cost we can buy seasonal fruits with the money
usually spent for vegetables. That would be also better for our health. As the vegetables
price is sky-high, it would be wise to consume one kilogram fruits in lieu of three
kilogram vegetables. As we know vegetables contain less nutrient & yet most of them
are spoiled by heat during cooking. To save our women from the hazard of baking
wheat bread, the owner of hotel, restaurant & food industry can play a vital role. They
have to given up the habit of preparing incredibly small & thin bread fried with six
month old burnt oil & rather have to begin making mega-size wheat bread like middle
east countries, one of which is enough for an entire family. Moreover we can make
wheat bread machine available in every family like Europe & America. Some may argue
that wheat flour is more costly than rice, but at the same time they should also consider
the facts of various diseases like diabetes & premature senility.

According to the experts, wheat flour’s price can be easily reduced by mixing
corn maze with it. We should also think about huge amount of water needed to produce
paddy (rice), which will be a real problem in our country in near future (also for many
other countries). On the contrary so much water is not necessary for the cultivation of
wheat. To acquire hundred percent benefit from eating wheat bread we have to consume
unfiltered natural flour ; because the food companies (market packed flour) greatly reduce
its nutrient quality by excessively straining it (to make flour white). So our request to
the government is that govt. should encourage people to produce & consume wheat
every way (and discourage the rice). If it is necessary we can depend on & produce
genetically modified (GM) wheat. As GM food has gained acceptance in Europe &
America, then we should not remain hesitated about it. Moreover our holy prophet (pbuh)
has given his opinion in favor of genetically modified (GM) food. In one of his sayings
he said, ‘in the last age there will be superabundance of food grains’. That means rice,
wheat, onion, garlic, fruits, vegetables etc of mega-size will be invented & people will
be obliged to consume those (to get ride of famine).

ভাত মানবজািতর সবেচেয় বড় শত


আমােদর জাতীয় জীবেনর উনিত-অগগিত-সমৃিদর পেথ সবেচেয় বড় বাধা িক িজজাসা করেল এেকক জন এেকক
উতর িদেবন। িকন' িচিকৎসা িবজােনর দৃিষেত যিদ িবেবচনা কেরন, তেব আিম বলব ভাতই আমােদর এক নমর
জাতীয় শত। চাল বা ভাত এমন একিট পধান খাদয যােত িচিন (শকররা/ েশতসার/কােবাহরাইেডট) েবশী পিরমােণ
থােক। ফেল আমােদর শারীিরক বৃিদ বা েযৌবন পািপ ঘেট খুবই দতগিতেত । ফেল আমরা িবেয় কির দত এবং
বাচা-কাচা উৎপাদন কির দত। মেন হয় েসিদন যােক েদখলাম হাফ-েপন পেড় েখলেছ, দিদন পরই েদিখ বাচা-
কাচার মাতা-িপতা হেয় েস অবসন হেয় পড়েছ । অথরাৎ ভাত খাওয়া আমােদর ভয়ঙর গিতেত জনসংখযা বৃিদর
একিট বড় মূল কারণ। িবশাস না হেল চীন-ভারত-ইেনােনিশয়া-জাপান-েকািরয়া পভৃিত ভাত খাওয়া েদেশর িদেক
তাকােত পােরন, পিতিট েদশই জনসংখযার ভাের িবপযসর। জনসংখযার কলনাতীত িবেসারেণর কারেণ সরকার পিতবছর
হাজার হাজার েকািট টাকা বযয় কেরও আমােদর সকেলর খাদয, বস, বাসসান, িশকা ও িচিকৎসার বযবসা করেত
পারেছ না। ভাত আমােদর েকবল দত েযৌবন পািপই ঘটায় না, পাশাপািশ আমােদরেক ফটাফট‌ বুেড়া-বুিড়েতও
রপানিরত কের থােক। ফেল আমরা তাড়াতািড় অকমরণয হেয় পিরবার-সমাজ-েদেশর েবাঝায় পিরণত হেয় যাই।
েকননা বুেড়া হেল একিদেক কাজ করার শিক কেম যায়, অনযিদেক অসুখ-িবসুেখ এেকবাের কাবু কের েফেল। এটা
িঠক েয, িচিন/শকররা/েশতসার/ কােবাহরাইেডট আমােদর সকল শিকর মূল উৎস এবং এগেলা ছাড়া আমরা অচল।
আবার এটাও সতয েয, শরীের অিতিরক (িচিন/শকররা/েশতসার) কােবাহরাইেডেটর সরবরাহ আমােদর জনয ভয়ঙর
কিতকর। িবষয়িটেক পািনর সােথ তুলনা করেল সবেচেয় যুিকসঙত হয় । আমরা সবাই জািন েয, সাভািবক পািন
আমােদর েবঁেচ থাকার মূল কারণ আবার বনযার (অিতিরক) পািন আমােদর মৃতুযর কারণ হেয় থােক।

আমােদর েদেশ ডাকারেদর কােছ যত েলাক যায়, তােদর শতকরা ৯০ ভােগরই েদখা যায় গযািসক
আলসােরর সমসযা আেছ। ভােত থাকা অিতিরক িচিন েথেকই েপেট গযাস হয়, গযাস েথেক হয় এিসিডিট এবং
এিসিডিট েথেক হয় আলসার। ভাত খাওয়া (অথরাৎ ভাত খাওয়ার মাধযেম বছেরর পর বছর শরীের মাতািতিরক িচিন
সরবরাহ করা) েয ডায়ােবিটস হওয়ারও সবেচেয় বড় কারণ, েসিট িনশয় েকউ অসীকার করেবন না। রিট েয-সব
েদেশর পধান খাদয, েস-সব েদেশ েখঁাজ িনেয় েদখেত পােরন, েসখােন ডায়ােবিটস এবং গযাসিটক আলসােরর েকান
মহামারী নাই। এই পযরােয় বলা যায় েয, পিত বছর এই দইিট মহামারী েরােগর িচিকৎসার জনয এই গরীব
েদশিটেক হাজার হাজার েকািট টাকার ঔষধ িবেদশ েথেক আমদানী করেত হয় । েকউ েকউ বলেত পােরন েয, এই
দিট েরােগর জনয বযবহত েবশীর ভাগ ঔষধই েদেশ ৈতরী হেয় থােক । হঁযা, ঔষধগেলা েদেশ ৈতরী হয় বেট ; তেব
ঔষধ ৈতরীর যনপািত, কযািমেকল, পযািকং সামগী ইতযািদ সবই িকন িবেদশ েথেক আমদানী করেত হয়। তাছাড়া
এসব েরাগ িনণরয় করার জনয েয-সব পযাথলিজকযাল েটস করেত হয় ; তােদর যনতপািত, িরেয়েজন ইতযািদও িবেদশ
েথেক আমদানী করেত হয়। ডাকােরর েচমাের বা হাসপাতােল লাইন িদেয় বেস থাকা এবং িদেনর পর িদন িবছানায়
পেড় েথেক যত মূলযবান সমেয়র অপচয় হয়, েসই কথা না হয় বাদই িদলাম। েকবল এই দইিট েরাগই নয়,
েছাট-বড় আেরা শত শত েরােগর উৎপিতর সােথই এই খতরনাক ভােতর সমকর খুঁেজ পাওয়া যােব (অথরাৎ রেক
িচিনর ভারসামযহীনতার)। ডাকারেদর মেত, এক মুেঠা ভাত খাওয়া আর এক মুেঠা িচিন খাওয়ার মেধয উেলখেযাগয
েকান পাথরকয নাই।

আপিন যিদ বেলন েয, ভাত নয় বরং অলসতাই হেলা আমােদর জাতীয় উনয়ন এবং সমৃিদর পেথ পধান
বাধা ; তেব আিম বলেবা ভাতই আমােদর েদহ-মেন অলসতা সৃিষ কের। ভােতর মেধয থাকা মাতািতিরক িচিন /
েশতসার অলসতার একিট মুল কারণ। আমরা েয সামানয একটু পিরশম করেলই কািহল হেয় পিড়, ভােত থাকা
মাতািতিরক সুগারই ইহার জনয দায়ী। ভােত েযেহতু পচুর িচিন থােক এবং ভাত দত হজম হেয় তার মূল খাদয
উপাদান েশািষত হেয় রেক চেল যায়, েসেহতু ভাত খাওয়ার ফেল অল সমেয়র মেধযই হঠাৎ কের আমােদর রেক
সুগােরর মাতা অেনক েবেড় যায় এবং আমরা ডায়ােবিটস েরাগীেদর মেতা ঘুমঘুমভাব, দবরলতা, অলসতা অনুভব করেত
থািক। তেব পশ করেত পােরন, জাপানী-েকািরয়ানরা েতা ভাত খাওয়া সেতও আমােদর মেতা অলস নয় বরং কেঠার
পিরশেম অভযস এবং অল পিরশেম কান-শানও হয় না। হঁযা, এেকেত আবহাওয়াগত িকছু সুিবধা তারা েপেয়েছ।
তােদর জলবায়ু শীত পধান হওয়ার কারেণ যেথষ পিরশম করেলও তােদর শরীর ঘামায় না । ফেল তারা আমােদর
মেতা সামানয পিরশেমই দবরল হেয় পেড় না। আর মেঙালীয়ান েগািষর েলােকরা (অথরাৎ নাক েবাচা মানুষরা)
নৃতািতকভােবই খুবই পিরশমী হেয় থােক। পকানের আবহাওয়াজিনত কারেণ আমােদর শরীর ঘামায় েবশী এবং ঘােমর
সােথ পেয়াজনীয় খিনজ লবণ েবিড়েয় যাওয়ার কারেণ আমরা সহেজই দবরল হেয় পিড় । এেকেত ভাত এবং ঘামােনা
দেটাই আমােদর অলসতা-দবরলতা-কমরিবমুখতার জনয সমানভােব দায়ী।

েকােনা েকােনা পিনত বযিক যুিক েদখান েয, পিরমাণ মেতা ভাত খাওয়া কিতকর নয় বরং মাতািতিরক
পিরমােণ ভাত খাওয়াই সােসযর জনয কিতকর। িকন সমসযা হেলা ভােতর মেধয এমনই এক অদূত দদরমনীয়
আকষরণ আেছ েয, ভাত খাওয়ার সময় মাতা মেতা খাওয়ায়ই কষকর বরং মাতািতিরক খাওয়াই সহজ। পকানের

আর (তালপাতার েসপাই মাকরা) হাসযকর শারীিরক আকার-আকৃিতই বলুন, সবই করণার উেদক কের (যােচতাই !)।
আর ইহার জনয দায়ী এই কুলাঙার ভাত। ভাত খাওয়া চীনা, ভারতীয় আর ইেনােনিশয়ানেদর সাসয েদেখন আর
রিট খাওয়া এরািবয়ান, ইউেরাপীয়ান ও আেমিরকানেদর সাসয েদেখন, তাহেলই ভােতর মিহমা বুঝেত পারেবন।
ফুটবল, িকেকট ইতযািদর মেতা পিরশম সাধয েখলাগেলােতও েদখেবন ভাত খাওয়া েদেশর েছেল-েমেয়রা েতমন সুিবধা
করেত পাের না। কারণ একটাই আর তাহেলা ভাত েখেল অল সমেয়র জনয পচুর শিক (কযালির) সাপাই পাওয়া

েদেশর সরকারগেলা দমিতেদর হাজার হাজার িমিলয়ন ডলার েবানাস িদেয়ও তােদর েদেশর জনসংখযা বৃিদ করেত
পারেছ না। েকান েকান িবেশষক মেন কেরন েয, ভাত নয় বরং অিশকা এবং দািরেদর কারেণ জনসংখযা বৃিদ
পায়। তাহেল আরব েদশগেলার িদেক লকয করন, তােদর িশকার হার অেনক কম তারপরও তােদর জনসংখযার
িবেসারণ নাই। এমনিক কেয়ক দশক পূেবর যখন তারা দিরদ িছল, তখনও তােদর জনসংখযার েকান সমসযা িছল
না।

অেনেক মেন কেরন, অিশকাই আমােদর সমৃিদর পেথ সবেচেয় বড় বাধা। এেকেত বলা যায় অভাব
অিশকার মূল কারণ, অভােবর মূল কারণ জনসংখযার লাগামহীন বৃিদ এবং জনসংখযার লাগামহীন বৃিদর মূল কারণ
ভাত। ইদানীং অেনেক বলেছন েয, দনরীিত আমােদর পধান সমসযা। েভেব েদখুন, দনরীিতর মূেল আেছ দািরদ-
অিশকা-অসেচতনতা আর আমােদর েদেশ দািরদ-অিশকার একিট বড় কারণ হেলা জনসংখযার িবেসারণ এবং জনসংখযা
েয আিশরবাদ না হেয় িবরাট সমসযা হেয় দািড়েয়েছ, তার মূেল আেছ এই কমবখ‌ত ভাত। েকান েকান িবজ বযিক
মেন কেরন েয, জাপান উপযুক পিশকেণর মাধযেম তার িবশাল জনসংখযােক অিভশাপ েথেক আিশবরােদ রপানিরত
কেরেছ। সিতয সিতয জাপােনর দৃষানিট একিট উেলখেযাগয বযিতকম আর বযিতকম কখনও সমাধান হেত পাের না।
কােজই েরাগ-বযািধমুক শরীর-সাাসয এবং সুখী-সমৃদ েদশ গঠেনর সপ বাসবায়েনর জনয আমােদর সকেলরই উিচত হেব
এখন েথেক ভাত খাওয়া পুেরাপুির বজরন করা এবং গেমর আটার রিট খাওয়া শর করা। (অবশয যেবর আটার রিট
খাওয়াটা আেরা পুিষকর এবং কলযাণকর । েকননা পৃিথবীর সবেচেয় উতম একিট িভটািমন ঔষধ যেবর পাতার রস
েথেক ৈতরী করা হয়।) আিম জািন কাজিট খুবই কিঠন এবং রাতারািত করা সমব নয়। িকন আমােদরেক অবশযই
আপাণ েচষা চািলেয় েযেত হেব। আেরকিট সমসযা হেলা, আমােদর নারী সমাজ রিট পাকােনার চাইেত ভাত রানা
করেত েবশী আগহী। েকননা ভাত রানা করা খুবই সহজ িকন রিট বানােনা খুবই কষকর কাজ । তেব পাশাপািশ
এটাও িচনা কের েদখেত হেব েয, ভাত খাওয়ার জনয নানা রকেমর মজাদার তরকারী রানা করেত হয় িকন রিট
খাওয়ার জনয তার েকান দরকার েনই। রিট খাওয়ার জনয েসফ আলু ভািজ অথবা ডাল হেলই যেথষ । েসেকেত
েয পয়সা িদেয় আমরা তরকারী কয় কির, তা িদেয় আমরা েদশী-িবেদশী েমৌসুমী ফল-মূল েখেত পাির। িবষয়িট
আমােদর সােসযর জনযও হেব অিধক উপকারী।

তরকারীর েয আকাশ েছায়া দাম, িতন েকিজ করলা না েখেয় বরং এক েকিজ আেপল খাওয়া বুিদমােনর
কাজ হেব। েকননা এেক েতা শাক-সবিজেত েতমন েকান িভটািমন থােক না, তারপেরও যা থােক েসগেলা আবার
রানার সময় আগেনর তােপ নষ হেয় যায়। রিট বানােনার ঝােমলা েথেক আমােদর নারী সমাজেক রকা করার জনয

Dear Bashir,
Thank you very much for the time you have taken for writing this long
article. It gives us immense pleasure to find out our own people
(Bengalee) to think something like this in so much scientific details.
But I think you would not mind if I have some differences at a few points. I
would be happy if you continue this discussion, for the fact that I am a
rice eater but at the same time like to have wheat breads.
The relationship of rice to obesity, diabetes etc. are unquestionable. No
one is compelling us to eat rice only. So in India, we are having a
combination of rice and bread everyday. In fact, wheat breads of different
compositions like Aloo Ka Paratha, Luchi, Puri, Khasta Paratha etc. are very
popular here. Obesity, diabetes etc. are international problems. Everyone is
now changiing habits.
So far as the relation of rice with population is not understood. If you
have been married early, your parents did not do that because of their fear
of aging due to having rice. It is a purely cultural affair. We have taken
many good things from the west through TV and cinema and obviously given
them many bad things. But we have to maintain some balance. Surely, we are
not having so many babies because of RICE. We are not taking some scientific
steps ourselves to curb the population.
Also, getting tired is a mental phenomenon. Go to the interior of Rajasthan
in India and find out how hard a man is working because he has to survive.
On the contrary, we give up once we start sweating.

Sadly, when President Ayub...advised Bengali citizens...to reduce dependency on rice,.....many
years ago,
some un-educated, uncivilized politicians in East Pakistan, led by AL morons.....opposed
that advice....and promised us ...that we will get cheap rice..when AL comes to power.!!!

Thank you for your effort. You have invested a great deal of time writing this essay. However,
we cannot do much about rice other than modifying our dietary habits. Two-third of the world
grow and eat rice because the land, topography and climate suit growing rice more easily than
anything else. You can advocate mixing rice with other nutritious food stuff to reduce
carbohydrates, but making rice responsible for our irresponsible behaviors and habits are not to

You are a very good Bengali. Ayub Khan blamed Bengalis for not choosing Urdu as the only
national language of Pakistan and called us "Crooked Bengalis" in his book "Dairies of Field
Marshall Mohammad Ayub Khan: 1966-72". Jinnah and many other Pakistani leaders advised
us on so many things for 24 years: why Urdu is better and should be only state language, how to
live as second class citizens, how to forget about rights and believe only in Muslim brotherhood,
how not to complain about discrimination, how to interpret election result correctly if it favors
the Bengalis etc. Some un-educated, uncivilized politicians in East Pakistan, led by AL morons
(AL thugs sounded better in your previous posting)......opposed those advices....and look what
we got......independent Bangladesh. How can a proud Bengali tolerate that?

Rice is the worst enemy of mankind - This is a wrong statement. Rice like wheat, barley,
potato, maze, corn, dates, grapes, watermelons, too sweet fruits, etc. are the supplier of excessive
amount of carbohydrates, if eaten in excessive amounts. The genetic programs in mankind have
been written in the codes of carbohydrate. It is the main source of energy for humans and many
other living beings. Carbohydrate metabolizes and produce energy like gasoline/diesel etc. do
produce mechanical power for running the vehicles. Carbohydrates are broken down into
glucose, which is the "fuel" that gives our bodies energy. Insulin's important job is to help
glucose get into the body's cells. Insulin Helps Build Muscle in the body. Glucose gets inside the
cells of the body with the help of insulin and produces energy for the body. Carbohydrates
provide the energy for the body to function. Carbohydrate can be metabolized only with insulin
that body produces. Some people can not produce enough insulin to metabolize the required
amount of carbohydrate to convert into body's need of energy. These people have type 2
diabetes. Some people can not produce insulin at all. They have type 1 diabetes. Medication, diet
and exercise can take care of the diabetes problem. It is not curable but is manageable at present.
In future, cures may be invented by the medical and bio-researchers.

After eating the carbohydrate (no matter it is from rice, wheat, barley, potato, maze, corn), it gets
digested in the stomach, producing the main ingredient called glucose. Insulin looks for the
glucose in the body. Insulin is like a key that opens up the locks on the body's cells so
that glucose get into body's cells. If the glucose can't get into the cells, it builds up in the blood
stream and people become diabetic. If the diabetics is left untreated, high blood glucose can
cause long-term complications. Additionally, when blood sugar reaches a certain level, the
kidneys try to get rid of it through urine - which means that you'll need to urinate more often.
Frequent urination can make someone feel tired, thirsty, or hungry. S/he may also start losing
weight.

The body also gets energy from a complex sugar called glycogen, which is stored in the liver and
muscles. The liver converts glycogen to glucose and releases it into the body's bloodstream
when someone is under stress and/or when extremely hungry. When enough insulin is present,
muscles can use their glycogen for energy, but cannot release it directly into the blood. In type 2
diabetes, the liver releases too much glucose, especially at night (when the liver normally
releases some glucose), resulting in high blood sugar levels in the morning. Insulin injections
help bring down the amount of glucose released by the liver during the night, bringing morning
blood sugars levels back to normal. When someone is sick or injured, or if someone is recovering
from surgery, insulin helps to heal by bringing amino acids (the building blocks of muscle
protein) to the muscles. Amino acids repair muscular damage and help them regain their size and
strength. If there isn't enough insulin in someones' body when the muscles been injured, amino
acids can't do their job, and the muscles can remain damaged and very weak.

When the author is saying, "....rice is our worst national enemy. Rice is such a prominent
food item which contains excessive amount of sugar (carbohydrate). So it hastens our
physical growth & we become adult (mature) very quickly. That's why we get married
promptly & start having babies more speedily. Sometimes it seems to me that just a
few days ago a guy who himself was a baby, now he is completely exhausted (-fagged-
worn-out) being a father or grandfather of many children. That means eating rice is the
root cause of population explosion in such a dreadful manner." - Why someone has to eat
excessive amount of rice to have excessive amount of carbohydrate? . It is not the problem of
rice, it is the problem of someone's bad habit of filling the stomach with excessive amount of
rice. It is not only rice, if excessive amount of wheat, barley, potato, maze, corn, dates, grapes,
watermelons, too sweet fruits, etc., all will supply excessive amount of carbohydrate if eaten in
excessive amount. So, whatever type of carbohydrate is eaten, most important thing to know,
how much of these foods, contain how much carbohydrate and how much is the daily
carbohydrate requirement for an individual. based on that information, eat only the required
amount of carbohydrate, not more or not too less. Eat other things in addition to carbohydrates
such as protein (meat, fish, egg, tofu, etc.), vegetables, fruits, salads, lots of liquid (at minimum,
double the amount of solid, shall be the liquid in the meals). Please fill the stomach with all the
other food ingredients than just the carbohydrates. Don't blame the rice or any carbohydrates
(that are very essential for the energy of the body), blame the bad eating habits. Brain tissues
basically live and function with the energy of carbohydrates.

People become habituated in foods that are abundant in an area. Bangladeshis are mostly
habituated in Rice, Fish, Vegetables, and Fruits because they are abundantly grown there
compared to the other types of human foods. That is why the people of china-india-indonesia-
thailand-japan-korea eat rice abundantly. It is not true that the rice just produced so many people.
It is the life-style, weather, environment, social norms, peoples' habits that caused over
populations, not just the rice.

The author states that hundreds of diseases can be named having link with this notorious
rice. This is a very wrong and over statement. Rice is sometimes the cure for many dieses rather
than causing hundreds of dieses. Rice water cures dehydration. Rice water is often the treatment
for gastro-intestinal disorders for the minors. Eating excess of rice may make someone sick but it
is not the rice, it is the human habit and the ignorance about food ingredients. Excess of
everything is bad. Specifically consuming any excess food is seriously bad.

The author wrote, "Some people think that illiteracy is the main problem in the way of
our national prosperity. In this point we can say that poverty is responsible for
illiteracy, over-population is responsible for poverty & rice is responsible for over-
population. Recently many people are claiming that corruption is our chief national
problem. Think in this way that poverty-illiteracy- unawareness is responsible for
corruption & in our country the primary cause of poverty & illiteracy is overpopulation.
Population not being a blessing rather has become a curse & rice is wholly responsible
for this kind of consequence. So we have to entirely give up the habit of eating rice
from right now & start having wheat bread in order to build a healthy & happy nation.
But our women community are more interested in cooking rice than baking wheat
bread." - It appears that the author is quite ignorant about many things and that is precisely our
national problem, and definitely not rice. If someone is not ignorant and precisely know how
much rice is needed for daily consumption for maintaining good health s/he is in good shape.
Have stomach full of only rice and then start blaming the rice is really a serious twist in the fact.
Only an idiot can think of replacing the rice as staple with wheat because the production of
wheat in bangladesh is very limited but rice is produced in abundance, not only someone wants
to do so, it is the soil condition, monsoon, water, weather, temperature, and thousands of years of
know-how to produce rice, made it happen. Does the author want people starve. If someone is
that ignorant, should not spread his ignorance all the world over. Chepe jawa bhalo. It is the
illiteracy which is our main national problem, not rice. Rice producers must be encouraged and
helped by researches for better productions, better technology, better seeds, enhanced procedures
in cultivation and harvesting, such that the country can become self sufficient in the staples.
Other foods must be tried to grow and produce, but the plan shall be realistic that becomes result
oriented, not just based on the hypes. Over-population shall be controlled by proper education,
family planning, assessing means to be able to support and educate the children, innovation,
privatization, and achieving overall skill growths for all spectrum of the population. It is not only
the number of people to see for overpopulation but counting the number of unskilled,
unproductive, and ignorant people in the society. Japan is overpopulated but the second richest
country in the worlds after USA because of their skilled people in the nation. Similarly
Bangladesh can be converted from scarring humans into human resources, if can be made
everybody skilled utilizing their good hard work to produce and create wealth by the efforts of
the self; rather than being engaged in hoarding and corruptions just being motivated to try to live
on someone else's wealth. Corruption is the biggest problem of Bangladesh, not the rice, that is
keeping 160 million people living. Without enough rice production, this enormous population
would not survive. Don't listen to this author and do not blame the rice. Blame the bad food
habits. Just be curious and learn the good habits in consuming foods, do hard work, do necessary
exercise, take minimum medications if at all needed, avoid grease, keep yourself lean and strong,
have good sleep, avoid stress, laugh as much as you can, you will be OK. Blaming the women
community ( is a sign of chauvinism) not to want to make bread is really ridiculous. Women are
not a different part of any society. It is the chauvenist male who sees it that way, and it is an
utmost ignorance. Please understant the structure of the human society first, before advising the
others, not to eat rice. Wheat by no means is better as a human food than rice. It is the wrong
perception, not a reality. Thay are all carbohydrates. Difference is made in the amount, not in the
kinds. A sudden unnecessary change from one food to other is rather bad for health, taste,
attitude, and contentment.

Genetically Modified (GM) food has caused havoc in the western world specifically by the fast
food industries that have the widespread selling the genetically modified (GM) meat, poultries,
fruits, veetables, fish and other types of foods. In many countries genetically modified (GM)
food that are causing enormous problems for the people are being legally band. Not all
genetically modified (GM) foods are bad but must remain careful and watch the results of GM
intakes.

This original email was a very unscientific claim. I think member Raisuddin has answered it very
well. This original email claims that eating rice causes diabetes. in my family there are multiple
diabetes patients. No Doctor has said that eating rice caused that. However, if you have diabetes,
you need to control your carbohadrate (rice, sweets, sugar, sweet fruits and so on) . Many asian
countries eat rice (china/japan/vietnam). That does not mean they are doing bad. South Indians
cannot live without rice. They are doing good.
But in general, our eating habit should change like lowering carbohydrate, increase protein
intake (non-meat), increase vegetable-fruits, etc.
I do not think having the price of rice within the reach of common people is a bad thing. We
could not keep the price of other food items within the reach of common people that is our
failure. (Unfortunately I have to blame all governments, not just 2 Awami League governments,
as many of us would like to do)
About Ayub Khan's comment, I think his advice was based of pure hatred to us
(Bangali/Bangladeshi whatever you say). I do not remember anywhere he appreciated
Bangalees/Bangladeshis. I would stay away from any dictator.

Mr. Bashir Mahmud Ellias is completely wrong when he says that rice is the worst enemy of
mankind. There is no empirical evidence supporting such a view. No scientific research has ever
proved what Mr. Ellias has written. It is highly misleading and this write-up should not have
been published in any public media.

Bangladesh’s poverty has a long history. In short poverty in Bangladesh is due to foreign rule
(since ancient time) and bad management. Even today Bangladesh is very badly governed. But it
is also true that Bangladesh was never better of than it is today (due to government by her own
people, however inefficient and corrupt the government may be). Bangladesh and all the poor
countries on earth, if we look carefully we will find, have awfully corrupt and incompetent
government.

Over population is the result of poverty and certainly not rice eating. Mr. Ellias can find truth of
this statement just looking at his own well to do friends; they do not have many children if they
are not just stupid. I have many educated friends in Dhaka and hardly anybody has more than 2
children. The case is not so with my lesser educated friends. Education is a great factor and lack
of education makes many people doing many stupid things. When people are rich and educated,
they do not produce children like rabbits even when they eat only rice. That is what statistics and
empirical evidence prove.

I live in Sweden and the country was poor until 1945. Swedish people eat potatoes and not rice.
This very Swedish people used to produce children like people of Bengal and many had to leave
the country due to poverty. Sweden became the richest country on earth in 1972 and she is now
one of the finest countries on this planet to live in. Swedes do not produce children now in spite
of much incentive given by the government for doing so. Most Pakistanis do not eat rice but
bread. Population of Pakistan was less until Bangladesh seceded and now population growth in
Pakistan is higher than Bangladesh. Over population is due to many complicated economic
circumstances and Mr. Ellias may not make it more complex and confusing by giving a wrong
theory.

that Europe has the highest population per squire kilometer since before 20th century.
Europe had real bay boomer era after world war II. Most of the developed countries now
want their population to increase because they realize the importance of human resources.
Last but not least far eastern countries all eating the rice but they never look older rather
always having baby face.

Being a doctor you should know that the more you eat the red meat earlier you look older,
like many Americans.

Your given below email is really very shocking for me. Since after my marriage and almost
from last 1.5 years i felmy self that i am going lazy and my memory is also going down.
Infact i feel that slowly gradually i am going in backward direction cant concentrate on
studies and othera ctivities cant drive etc etc but your given below email make me very very
shocking. If this is reason than i will definatly think about this.
Sir if you do me 1 favour I feel that i have acidity problem and when i wakeup early morning
and going for toot brush i feel vomating. I am 33 Years old but my weight is under weight
47 Kg and i tried lot but cant gain wait. When i eat Egg or Fish or some other food i face
