Composition
Each tablet contains :

Misoprostol (1% ) 20 mg. Equivalant to 200 mcg misoprostol 100% .

Properties
Misoprostol is a synthetic analogue of alprostadil (prostaglandin E1 which is used in the prophylaxis
and treatment of peptic ulcers, particularly those induced by non steroidal inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDS).

Following oral administration, Misoprost (misoprostol) is rapidly absorbed and metabolised to its
active form (misoprostol acid).

Misoprost (misoprostol) has both anti secretory ( inhibiting gastric acid secretion) and mucosal
protective properties .

NSAIDS inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandin. the difficiency of which within the gastric mucosa may
lead to diminishing bicarbonate and mucus secretion and may contribute to mucosal damage .

In addition to its anti-secretory activity, Misoprost can increase bicarbonate and mucus production .

Indications
Misoprost (Misoprostol) is indicated for the prevention of NSAIDS (non steroidal anti-inflanunatory
drugs, including aspirin)- induced gastric ulcers in patients at high risk of complications from gastric
ulcer, eg. the elderly and patients with concomitant debilitating disease, as well as patients at high
risk of developing gastric ulceration, such as patients with a history of ulcer, It has not been shown
to prevent duodenal ulcers in patients taking NSAIDS. It should be taken for the duration of NSAID
therapy. It has been shown to prevent gastric ulcers in controlled studies of three months' duration .

It had no effect, compared to placebo, on gastro-intestnal pain or discomfort associated with NSAIDS
use.

Contraindications
 Allergy to prosraglandins .
 Pregnancy .

Side Effects
Diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulance, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, headache,
constipation. Gynecological disorders include spotting, cramps, menestrual disorder,
hypermenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, Post-menopausal vaginal bleeding .
Precautions and warntngs
Misoprost should not be given to patients who are pregnant or who may become pregnant because
of its abortifacient property .

Misoprost is not excreted in human milk since it is rapidly metabolized throughout the body .

However, it is not known if the active metabolite misoprostol acid is excreted in human milk .

As such Misoprcst should not be administered to nursing mothers because the potential excretion of
the active metabolite could cause significant diarrhea in nursing infants .

Dosage and administration

The recommended adult oral dose of Misoprost for the prevention of NSAIDS - induced gastric ulcers
is 200 mcg four rimes daily for the duration of NSAID therapy .

Misoprost should be taken with a meal, and the last dose of the day should be at bedtime. If the 200
mcg dose cannot be tolerated, a dose of 100 mcg can be used .

Storage
Store at room temprature away from light and humidity.

Carton box containing two PVC / AL. strips of 10 tablets each with inner pamphlet .
