THE SALLIE MAE FUND UNMET NEED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM


THE PROGRAM
The Sallie Mae Fund will provide $1 million in 2007 to help meet last dollar needs of low-income students
through the Unmet Need Scholarship Program. The awards are to be used to supplement the financial
aid package, not replace aid students have been granted from their institution.

The Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship Program is administered by Scholarship Management
Services, a department of Scholarship America. Scholarship America is a national nonprofit educational
support and student aid service organization that seeks to involve and assist the private sector in
expanding educational opportunities and encouraging educational achievement. Awards are granted
without regard to race, color, creed, religion, age, gender, disability, or national origin.

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to apply to the Unmet Need program, the student must –

• Be a United States citizen or a permanent resident,


• Have a family adjusted gross income for calendar year 2006 of $30,000 or less,
• Demonstrate unmet financial need of at least $1,000 after the financial aid award package
has been determined,
• Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or minimum GED
average test score of 42, and
• Be a high school senior or graduate planning to enroll or a student already enrolled in a full-
time* undergraduate course of study at an accredited postsecondary institution.**

* Full-time study is defined as full-time enrollment through at least the 2007 fall term.
** Approved accredited institutions are defined as Title IV eligible, accredited, postsecondary
two- or four-year colleges or universities, vocational, or technical schools in the United States
or Puerto Rico.

AWARDS
If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award ranging from $1,000 to $3,800. Awards are
not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

APPLICATION
Interested students must complete the attached application and mail it along with the following required
documents:
• Current, complete transcript of grades – One of the following documents must be provided:
¾ Official transcript of grades
¾ Unofficial transcript that includes the student and school’s name
¾ Student-generated online transcript that includes student name, school name, grade and
credit hours earned for each course, and term in which each course was taken.
(Grade reports are NOT acceptable.)
¾ GED test score results
• 2007-2008 Student Aid Report (SAR) or Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR) –
One of the following documents must be provided:
¾ Complete SAR Print Summary from the FAFSA web site
¾ Student copy of the complete SAR
¾ School’s complete ISIR
Please note that the SAR or ISIR must be for the 2007-2008 academic year and include the
family’s adjusted gross income and the expected family contribution (EFC). Other documents
that are missing any of these items are not acceptable.

• Financial aid award letter from school student plans to attend for the 2007-2008 academic
year
If the financial aid award letter for 2007-2008 will be available prior to May 31, 2007, the student
should send the entire application package when the financial aid award letter is available. If the
2007-2008 letter will not be available by May 31, the student may send an “estimated” 2007-2008
letter or his/her 2006-2007 award letter. (If selected as a recipient, any student who sent the
2006-2007 letter will be asked to send the 2007-2008 letter at a later date.)

An electronic printout with financial award information is acceptable if the document includes the
school name and the student name.

The application and all required supporting documents (transcript, SAR, financial aid award
letter) MUST be mailed to Scholarship America IN ONE ENVELOPE postmarked by May 31, 2007.

Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all required materials in one envelope. Materials
sent separately will not be considered. All information received is considered confidential and is
reviewed only by Scholarship America.

SELECTION OF RECIPIENTS
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of all eligibility criteria and demonstrated unmet financial
need. Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or
employee of The Sallie Mae Fund play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision
of Scholarship America as final.

Applicants will be notified at the end of July. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as
recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Scholarship America will notify scholarship recipients at the home address provided. Recipients who do
not respond back with the required student acceptance form after two notification letters from
Scholarship America will forfeit their award to an alternate recipient.

PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The Sallie Mae Fund. Payment is
made in one installment on September 1. The check is mailed to each recipient's home address and is
made payable to the school for the student.

OBLIGATIONS
Recipients have no obligation to The Sallie Mae Fund. They are, however, required to supply
Scholarship America with updated financial aid information, when requested, and to notify Scholarship
America of any changes of address, school enrollment, or other relevant information. Failure to notify
Scholarship America of any of these changes may result in the forfeit of an award.

REVISIONS
The Sallie Mae Fund reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures of this scholarship
program and to make changes at any time including termination of the program.
