Sugar comes from a plant which is call ed sugarcane . Th e sugarc an e gro w s in e h ot co u ~~ri?s .
When sugarcanes are .ripe, they are cut down . Then, their large gree n leav es a r e t a ken off. 1 he
canes, then are tied in bundles and sent to the sugar mills . H e re they are presse d hard so t h at a ll the
juice comes out of them. The juice now looks like dirty water. It is, then cle an e d and h eated in iro n
pans . All the water goes off, leaving the sugar oehind . The sugar is brown in colour . It is h eated
again and cleaned till it becomes white . This is called cane sugar. In the past all the sug a r w e u sed
came to India from Java and other countries . Now sugar is made in our own country . Th e r e a re
