Do you know what the meaning of corruption is? What is the relation between money and
corruption? Well, corruption is common everywhere in the world, even in the United States. It’s just
a matter of intensity. However, it is quite shocking when one reliable survey claims Jakarta as the
most corrupt place in Indonesia.
The survey has made me sad, actually, because I stay and earn a living here in the capital. As
most people know, Tanjung Priok port smuggling is not a new thing at all. Entrepreneurs who want
to minimize their tax payments tend to do such a thing more often. They even bribe the officials.
Well, I think the measures taken so far to overcome the problem by punishing the corruptors is
still not far enough. We have to prevent the younger generations from getting a bad mentality
caused by corruption.
I believe we should start at the earliest stages in school and I think everyone should be
involved in the effort to eradicate corruption. We must not make any distinction.

Question.
1. What is the type of the text?
2. What kind of generic structure will you find in the text ?
3. What kind of generic structure will you find in the last paragraph ?

More Dust Bins is Cleaner

To improve comfort and cleanliness at the school, there should be an increasing number of dust
bins.
When we look at classroom, school corridors and schoolyard, there papers, mineral water
cops, straws, and napkin everywhere. The condition of unseemliness really hinders learning and
teaching environment. They can be filled out with water coming from the rain. This can be placed
for mosquito to spread out.
Anyway I notice that most of the students have responsibilities for their school environment. They
put their litter on the proper place but some of them are not diligent enough to find the dust bins.
The numbers of the dust bins in the school are not enough. More dust bins should be put beside
each step, outside of the classrooms and some along of the corridors. Probably one dust bin should
be in every ten meters. So when students want to throw away their litters, they can find the dust
bins easily.
When school is equipped with sufficient dust bins, students do not have problem of discomfort any
more. So provide more dust bins and school will be very clean and become a very nice place to
study.

Removing Lead from Petrol

In all the discussion over the removal of lead from petrol (and the atmosphere) there doesn't seem
to have been any mention of the difference between driving in the city and the country.
While I realize my leaded petrol car is polluting the air wherever I drive, I feel that when you travel
through the country, where you only see the another car every five to ten minutes, the problem is
not as severe as when traffic is concentrated on city roads.
Those who want to penalize older, leaded petrol vehicles and their owners don't seem to appreciate
that, in the country, there is no public transport to fall back upon and one's own vehicle is the only
way to get about.
I feel that the country people, who often have to travel huge distances to the nearest town and who
already spend a great deal of money on petrol, should be treated differently to the people who live
in the city.

The importance of Reading

I personally think that reading is a very important activity in our life. Why do I say so?
Firstly, by reading we can get a lot of knowledge about many things in the world such as Science,
technology. Sports, arts, culture, etc written in either books, magazine, newspaper, etc.
Secondly, by reading we can get a lot of news and information about something happening in any
parts of the world which can we see directly.
Another reason, reading can give us pleasure too. When we are tired, we read books, newspaper or
magazine on the entertainment coloumn such as comedy, short story, quiz, etc. To make us relaxed.
The last, reading can also take us to other parts of the world. By reading a book about Irian Jaya we
may feel we’re really sitting in the jungles not at home in our rooms.
From the facts above, it’s obvious that everyone needs to read to get knowledge, information and
also entertainment. Or in summary we can say reading is truly important in our life.

Never Try Smoking

A lot of people, especially teenagers, who do not smoke, always want to try smoking. They know it is
bad for them and all, but it is just something they want to try. So they ask one of their smoker
friends for a cigarette. Admittedly, they firstly can not light it on their own so they ask his friend to
do it. Then they inhale that cigarette and smoke occasionally.
Apparently that makes them the born smokers. Now they do smoke fairly regularly. They can
notavoid smoking and they enjoy too. They have smoker friends. Everyday they bring a pack in their
pocket. For them, a pack of cigarette is as important as a wallet for their money.
Suddenly, for certain reason, they realize the fact that tobacco is the cause of a long list of nasty
diseases. It is not only heart disease, stroke, and chronic lung disease but also bladder, lung, and
pancreatic cancer. Even it was reported that around 400,000 Americans died each year. It was one
every 80 seconds from tobacco-related illnesses.
Then they decide it is stupid to harm selves. They want to quit smoking. Unfortunately, they find
that quitting smoking is so difficult. “Why can't I stop smoking? I really want to stop it”. It is hard to
quit because nicotine is powerfully addictive. Cigarette is one of the most efficient drug-delivery
devices everdevised. As result, when people try to quit smoking, they often experience classic
nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, headache, depression, and restlessness.
Well, still want to try smoke? Think the facts before trying! If you are not smoker, you should never
and never try to smoke.

Why Should Wearing a Helmet when Motorcycling

We often hear lots of stories from road regarding people taking spill on motorcycle when they are
riding without using helmet. Mostly the riders badly end up in mess.
Wearing a fitted protective helmet offers many benefits which reduces the negative aspects of
riding. First and the most important is that wearing the correct helmet can save a rider's life,
physical ability, family pain, and money. The recommended designs of motorcycle helmets can
provide total protection. They not only protect riders from getting a worse road injured accident but
also from flying bugs, such as rain, sleet, mud and other potential projectiles.
Second, wearing a helmet can gives the raiders a matter of style. Helmets give the opportunity for
rider to express the image they may want to project when riding on they way. This benefit may not
be important to some people, but to others, it means a lot and important. By choosing the most
appropriate helmet from all of the various styles, such as beanie, shortly, German, and many others,
wearing a helmet which can projecting an image is an inherent crucial part of motorcycling and help
riders feel more confident when riding on the road.
However, what most important is wearing helmet when riding is a matter of using it properly.
Bikers should use the helmets which are fixed to their head. It is really not good if they places
simply the helmets on the head without settling them properly. The bikers should fasten the helmet
correctly to their head in order to get safe and comfort.

A Campaign of the Importance of Reading

Reading habit is poor among Indonesians because most people haven’t realized the importance of
reading.
Reading is important to transform knowledge and technology. By reading, one knows the world. He
or she will understand what he doesn’t see by himself or herself. The lines of the paragraphs in an
article contain pieces of knowledge. The knowledge is needed to improve the quality of human’s life.
Technology transformation from other country can only be done by reading a lot various sources of
literature. Valuable books in libraries and bookstores mean nothing if they are not read.
Realizing the importance of reading will make someone motivated to read. When we know that
something is very important because it can give us valuable information, we will try to get or do the
thing. For example, a businessman who always follows latest information or news, will know what
to do in his/ her business. He will make a good decision to make a transaction. Most people in all
developed countries have realized the importance or reading and they have good reading habits. In
bus and train stations, vehicles, waiting rooms, parks, people like reading. They enjoy reading which
gives them valuable knowledge and inspiration.
A good understanding toward the importance of reading can be achieved by well organized and
effective campaign. To plant an understanding in a generation’s minds is not an easy job. It needs a
hard work from all components of the nation, especially the government. A serious campaign which
is organized by the central and local government can help common people wake up and stand to
face the real competition. The campaign can be done through various kinds of mass media such as
TV, radio, booklets, bulletins, newspapers, magazines. It can also be conducted by teachers, parents
and all people who care.
Therefore, a nation-wide effective campaign of the importance of reading by all components of the
nation should be done, facilitated by the government, to face the tighter competition. The world has
forced globalization. Those people with little knowledge will be left behind. To speed up the better
change in this country, a good reading habit is really important.

Fasten Your Seat Belt !

A seat belt, sometimes called a safety belt, is a safety harness designed to secure the occupant of a
vehicle against harmful movement that may result from a collision or a sudden stop. As part of an
overall occupant restraint system, seat belts are intended to reduce injuries by stopping the wearer
from hitting hard interior elements of the vehicle or other passengers (the so-called second impact)
and by preventing the wearer from being thrown from the vehicle.
During 2004, total accident in DKI Jakarta are 4.544 cases, with 1.146 death victims, 63% of that
accident victims didn’t use seat belt (Source: tempo interactive). If we use seat belt, we will be safe if
an accident happening to us. Of course it will decrease the number of death by fatal accident. This
fact makes us realize that if we don’t use seat belt, we will endanger our life. So it’s very important
to use seat belt.
For some people, using seat belt makes journey uncomfortable, makes us can’t move freely, etc. But
if we used to wear it, it will be our habit. We will feel more and more comfortable if we often use it.
Regardless of whether it is comfortable or not, it is very important for us to use seat belt, to save our
life.
Government, especially police department, began enforcing us to use a seat belt to decrease the
number of death victim. It’s appropriated with polices’ slogan “Melindungi dan Mengayomi
Masyarakat Indonesia”. Because the number of death victim in Indonesia is so high. And most of the
death victims didn’t use seat belt.
A rule in our country about seat belt:
UNDANG-UNDANG LALU LINTAS DAN ANGKUTAN JALAN
Pasal 61
tingginya Rp. 1.000.000,00 (satu juta rupiah).
This rule is good, but I think the sanction of this rule is so cruel, it’s very expensive to pay for
Indonesian people. Indonesia isn’t a rich country. This rule is susceptible to be misused, the misuse
of paying the sanction. It will be better if the sanction is below Rp 1.000.000,00.
How about a pregnant woman?
I think pregnant woman shouldn’t be free from the rule enforcing the use of a seat belt. Her big
stomach isn’t a reason to not use seat belt. Now, there is a special seat belt which is designed for
pregnant woman. For pregnant mothers, the fetus is protected by a sac full of amniotic fluid. This
sac is quite strong and the fluid inside acts like a cushion to protect the fetus. The sac is pliable so it
can change shape to a certain degree. The proper use of a seat belt will divert the pressure points off
the sac, and thus the fetus would only be minimally affected. The lap belt should be worn low over
the pelvic bones and not against the soft stomach area. The shoulder belt should be worn across the
chest. Both should be worn snugly. So, the baby won’t be pressed by seat belt.
There is no reason for us to not use seat belt. There are so many advantages of using seat belt. And
there are so many disadvantages if you don’t use seat belt. I think we have to rely on one thing: our
safety. As wise men say: ”Protection is better than curing”. So, fasten your seat belt…!!!

Solve the Problem of Economic Issues

Government should not raise fuel price to solve the problem of economic issues. People were
affected severely with the high fuel price hike last year. Obviously they cut their spending. As an
example, they had to buy lower quality of rice or palm oil. There were also fewer buyers of
secondary commodities like flour, or canned meat or fish.
Furthermore, the condition of low income family will become even worse because their expenses
will increase while their salaries will not. Many companies will have to trim the number of
employees because they are incapable of managing buying or selling price, standard wages and
personal affairs.
Finally, government should not raise fuel price to overcome economic problem but the solution
should be sought by tapping into the nation’s own potential and utilizing it to enhance productivity
to its maximum.

Where Should Be after High School?

The National examination result will be publicly enounced in next short time. Euphoria will flood
for those who get success. In the other hand, It will be sorry to hear that there are some of them do
not succeed in their national final examination. For those who succeed soon will think to decide;
where will they be after graduating high school? Actually it will be easy to decide for those has been
arranged and thought earlier but for those have not planed yet, it will be quite confusing.
Continuing study or looking for work is the primary choice among them. When they think about
continuing study, they will think hard about the time and cost. How long the higher study will last?
And how high is about the cost. In the same way, when they think about straightly seeking job, what
skill and competence they have got is a big matter of questioning. So, doing both choices in the same
time is an alternative.
Continuing study as well as seeking job is possibly done but it will be hard for them. Conventionally
studying in the university needs much time to spend especially in the first year. It is true because
they have to do and adapt a lot of things in their new higher school. it will be very hard to looking
for job. Therefore it should come to their mind of continuing studying at higher school from their
own home. As result, the available time will be more flexible for them. Then it will be very possible
to seek job and get the appropriate one. This type of studying is publicly known as distance
learning.
As the alternative method of studying, besides the conventional studying which students and the
lecturer have to meet in the fixed time and place regularly, distance learning provides possibility to
grow better. Possibly working and studying surely will create high quality graduate. Distance
learning should appear as a considerable choice for them.

Watch your Kids While Watching TV

Television becomes one of the most important devices which takes place in almost houses. It can
unite all members of the family as well as separate them. However, is it important to know what
your kids are watching? The answer is, of course, absolutely “Yes” and that should be done by all
parents. Television can expose things you have tried to protect the children from, especially
violence, pornography, consumerism and so on.
Recently, a study demonstrated that spending too much time on watching TV during the day or at
bedtime often cause bed-time disruption, stress, and short sleep duration.
Another research found that there is a significant relationship between the amount of time spent for
watching television during adolescence and early adulthood, and the possibility of being aggressive.
Meanwhile, many studies have identified a relationship between kids who watch TV a lot and being
inactive and overweight.
Considering some facts mentioning above, protect your children with the following tips:
Limit television viewing to one-two hours each day
Do not allow your children to have a TV set in their own bedrooms
Review the rating of TV shows which your children watch
Watch television with your children and discuss what is happening in the show

Tourism Benefit on Local People
What is the benefit of tourism for local people? Well, Tourism is now a huge contributor to the
economies of most countries. Tourism industries can bring money, job vacancy and advancement
especially to developing regions. However, this money often goes into the pockets of foreign
investors, and only rarely benefits for local people.
Tourism industries will not give much benefit for local people if, for example, multinational hotel
chains don't care about the surrounding nature when they build new hotels. This can cause many
social, cultural and geographical problems. Some local people may get job and money from that
International hotel chain. However in case of missing that opportunity, some of them still have their
own environment.
Moreover, some facts show that tourists tend to go, visit and spend their money in restaurants, bars
and even luxury hotels of that multinational chains. They less go to such places; restaurant, bar,
hotel, shop which are owned by local people. This can prevent the local people's business from
becoming even larger.
Most important thing, tours or excursions of tourism have little effect on nature. Even it can disrupt
or destroy ecosystems and environments, and if it does, the local people will get the risk.
So the local government policies should be put in place to ensure that tourism will make the benefit
spreading widely. The policies should guarantee that tourism will not cause any harm to any local
people or places.

Mobile Phones in the School

Recently most people own mobile phone. Why does mobile phone user increase dramatically in
recent years? First, the feature and functions has increased. Mobile phone is not used just for
calling, but sending text, taking pictures, recording videos, accessing internet, playing games and
much more. Second, mobile phone has also become a lot cheaper. Now this communication device
does not only fill the pocket of adult but also teenager and student. Even a lot phones are
intentionally designed to teenaged market. However should they be allowed to bring them to
school.
Many schools do not allow students to bring cell phones to school. It is very reasonable because
bringing phone to school potentially disrupts the learning process. Most students use cell phones
irresponsibly. They use cell phones to talk to their friend during class time. They also use the
calculator and camera features in the class as well. Those potentially lead less concentration in the
time of learning and teaching process.
Students go to school to learn and behave fair way. Mobile phones provide a large temptation to
cheat in tests. They can communicate to anyone and almost anywhere in the world. Because of the
small size of the cell phone, students can send a text quietly and discreetly. The text can go
unnoticed anywhere to get help on answering tests, homework, and other class assignment.
Learning in school is to behave fair not cheating.
Therefore, schools should ban students from bringing their cell phones. However it should be done
fairly. In case of an emergency some student need a call for help, providing easy access to phone is
better.

There are several phrases that are commonly used. These phrases are often used incorrectly.

for example
for instance

such as

e.g.

These phrases essentially have the same meaning, but they are not used in the same way. For our
purposes, let's break them up into 2 groups: phrases used within a sentence and phrases used tobegin a
new sentence.
Group 1: Phrases Used Within A Sentence
Each phrase can be used within a sentence when it is followed by a list of items which elaborate on or
show examples for the main idea of the sentence. Here are examples:
I can play quite a few musical instruments, for example, the flute, the guitar,
and the piano.

I can play quite a few musical instruments, for
instance, the flute, the guitar, and the piano.

I can play quite a few musical instruments,e.g., the
flute, the guitar, and the piano.

I can play quite a few musical instruments, such
as the flute, the guitar, and the piano.

Look at the last sentence with such as. Do you see anything different with this sentence as compared to
the first three? Such as does NOT have a comma after it; the first three phrases have commas before
and after them.
The phrase such as can be used in the middle of a sentence without any commas. Take a look at this
example:
Car companies such as Toyota and Ford manufacture their automobiles in many
different countries around the world.

You may be wondering why there are no commas. The answer is simple: the words after such as are
necessary and essential to the meaning of the sentence. If you take out those words, the meaning will
change. Let's take out such as:
Car companies manufacture their automobiles in many different countries around
the world.

What does this sentence mean? It could mean ALL car companies manufacture their automobiles in
many different countries around the world. This is not true because some companies produce their cars
in just one or two countries. Therefore, the phrase such as Toyota and Ford is necessary. If these words
are necessary, do not use commas.
Group 2: Phrases Used To Begin A New Sentence
Usually only for example and for instance can begin new sentences. Each can begin a new sentence
when the phrase is followed by a complete idea or sentence (not a list of items).
My father loves going to restaurants which serve exotic foods. For example, last
week he went to a restaurant which serves deep-fried rattlesnake.

My father loves going to restaurants which serve exotic
foods.  For instance, last week he went to a restaurant
which serves deepfried rattlesnake.

So, how can we make the above paragraph better? Let's use the phrase for example.

It is apparent that when a person desires to learn a second

language, he must study and use that language outside of the formal
classroom setting. If he does not use his new mode of
communication, he will never truly progress to a proficient level. He
must seek as many opportunities as possible to employ that new
language in "real" situations. There are many things a student can do
to supplement his learning and second language acquisition. For
example, students can attend churches where the target language is
spoken. They can make many friends and attend numerous
gatherings for free. Through these interactions, students are
guaranteed opportunities to learn and practice the new language.

IELTS Grammar: 'for example' and 'such as'

Students often make mistakes when using these two phrases. To avoid mistakes, follow this simple
advice:
- Use For example, at the start of a sentence.
- Use such as in the middle of a sentence.
Compare these examples:
1. Children should eat less junk food. For example, they should avoid eating burgers and
chips.
2. Children should avoid eating junk food such as burgers and chips.
Notice that 'For example' is followed by a comma and a full sentence. 'Such as' is in the middle of the
sentence, followed by two nouns. You can use 'For instance' instead of 'For example'. You can use
'like' instead of 'such as'.
