Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Organelle Trail

Content Area: Life Science
Grade Level(s): 7th Grade

Content Standard Addressed: S7L2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to describe how cell
structures, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems interact to maintain the basic needs of organisms.
a. Develop a model and construct an explanation of how cell structures (specifically the nucleus, cytoplasm,
cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, lysosome, and mitochondria) contribute to the function of the cell as a
system in obtaining nutrients in order to grow, reproduce, make needed materials, and process waste.
Technology Standard Addressed:
3C: curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of
artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
Selected Technology Tool:
Discover Education Board

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: This project is engaging because students get to take charge of their own learning. They will be
able to present the information using their own design of a wanted poster.
Representation: This project has multiple means of representation. The students are provided access to
computers, videos and text to research.
Action and Expression: Students will be able to express their knowledge and research during the presentation
verbally, on the poster through writing and through drawing or art.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will assign each group an organelle to research. Students will
access a Discovery Education board created by the teacher. Each group of students will create a wanted
poster for their assigned organelle. Students will use video links and conduct their own research to gather
information about their cell organelle. The requirements for the project have been laid out on the Discovery
board. Once completed, each group will present their poster. After all posters have been presented, students
will fill in a graphic organizer with information about all cell organelles. This project will require four days to
complete.
Student learning will be assessed informally as I hear students working on their projects and assist them when
necessary. Students will also be required to use the information from all the projects to learn about all of the
organelles. They will be formally assessed on this topic at the end of the unit. Students will each receive a
graded rubric sheet with the grade for their group project.
Reflective Practice: I feel that this activity will be fun and engaging for students as they learn about the
structure and function of the cell organelles. After the wanted posters are finished, they will be presented in
class and students will fill in a graphic organizer as they hear about each cell organelle. I think another way to
do this would be to create a wanted video announcement for cell organelles. Perhaps our class could
exchange videos with another classroom to make the Loti level higher.
