ABSTRACT:

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) prevents alongside increasing the production volume
large amounts of CO2 from being released into from the reservoirs. This paper critically
the atmosphere. The technology involves examines supporting features of aforementioned
capturing CO2 produced by large industries, economics of CO2-EOR and CCS in actual
compressing it for transportation and then world practice.
injecting it deep into a rock formation at a
carefully selected and safe site, where it is
permanently stored. In studies and applications it
is observed that the CO2 captured by CCS
process can be used in Gas Injection EOR.

The paper gives emphasis to the global

challenge in CCS and effective applications of
the Carbon Dioxide impelled Enhanced Oil
Recovery from the reservoirs (CO2-EOR). It
scrutinizes the evolution of CCS methods and
comparative advancements in the
implementations of CO2-EOR. The major
concern of Carbon emission in environment and
climate change risk mitigation brought about by
CCS is descriptively demonstrated.

Injecting CO2 in Deep Saline Formations (DSF)

or Mature Oil reservoirs for EOR has been seen
as an effective measure for CCS and a safer
method for reducing Greenhouse Gases. CO2
Injection into oil reservoirs is being productively
practiced in over 18000 active wells worldwide. As domestic oil production in India is carried
CO2 injection has also improved the production out from heavy oil reservoirs of the country, the
of Natural Gas in terms of Enhanced Gas scope of EOR is expanding; and hence CO2-
Recovery. EOR seems compelling. The paper explores the
possibilities and feasibilities of CO2-EOR
The study clearly distinguishes CCS from CO2- applications in India.
EOR in terms of framework regulations and
progresses with evaluation of already employed
CO2-EOR across major producing countries
and their success ratios. It has been addressed in
various technical literatures that CO2-EOR
outweighs the economic aspects of CCS
