    Noli Me Tangere is the first novel written by Filipino national hero José Rizal in 1887. It was published in Germany and written during Spanish colonization of the Philippines to describe perceived inequities of Spanish Catholic priests and the ruling government. Rizal drew inspiration from the Bible and a type of cancer to probe the "cancers" of Filipino society. He dedicated the novel to the Philippines and sought to acquaint readers with opposing social forces preventing Filipinos from regaining human rights, dignity, justice and freedom. The novel portrays aspects of independence through characters like Crisostomo Ibarra, Maria Clara, Padre Damaso and others.

    About Noli Me Tangere

    Noli Me Tangere is the first novel written by Filipino patriot and national hero Dr. José P. Rizal in 1887
    and published in Germany. Noli Me Tángere (Latin for Touch me not) is a novel written during the
    colonization of the country by Spain to describe perceived inequities of the Spanish Catholic priests and
    the ruling government.

    Rizal entitled this novel as such drawing inspiration from John 20:17 of the Bible, the technical name of a
    particularly painful type of cancer (back in his time, it is unknown what is the modern name of said
    disease). He proposed to probe all the cancers of Filipino society that everyone else felt too painful to
    touch.

    Rizal dedicated his Noli Me Tangere to the Philippines – “To My Fatherland.” His dedication run as
    follows: Recorded in the history of human sufferings is a cancer so malignant a character that the least
    touch irritates it and awakens in it the sharpest pains.

    The reasons why Rizal wrote the Noli Me Tangere is to get the readers acquainted with the social forces
    which opposes each other, thus preventing the realization of Rizal's aspiration for the Filipinos to regain
    their human rights, especially human dignity, justice and freedom.

    "Noli Me Tangere" portrays the different aspects of gaining independence; Jose Rizal focuses on social
    climbers, abusive power, family devotion, self-sacrifice, and purity and faithfulness.

    The first half of Noli me Tangere was written in Madrid, Spain from 1884-1885 while Dr. José P. Rizal was
    studying for medicine. While in Germany, Rizal wrote the second half of Noli me Tangere from time-to-
    time starting February 21, 1887.

    Noli me Tangere is subdivided into 63 chapters, each are simultaneous from one another and explored
    lives of different characters embedded into single time frame and has interconnections. Originally, Noli
    me Tangere has 64 chapters.
