AMONG OUR HOMES, CHANGE IS NOW.
ORTH LAWNDALE shows signs of rising above the trend of declining values in Chicago. “Come
home and thrive.” said Alderman Sharon Denise Dixon as she announced the addition of 22 more
single family affordable homes to be constructed in the North Lawndale community. “Iʼve brought
this project to our ward to support the families who are being shut out of the American Dream.” The high
energy efficient homes are part of an overall strategy for North Lawndale that promotes healthy, safe, quality
housing in the 24th ward and makes it attainable to our working families. This adds to our success of having
already delivered 12 new, National Award Winning, green and high energy performance, affordable homes
in the 24th Ward. This is done at a time when many other wards havenʼt even had one new home built.
The homes delivered were nominated and won a national competition for being the most Affordable Green
Homes in the nation for 2009.

Lawndale Christian Health Center (LCHC), a leading provider of quality, affordable primary health care services on
Chicago’s west side, will be constructing a 64,000–square foot Health and Wellness Center on the LCHC Ogden Avenue
Campus. Funding for the new site was partly obtained through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The 24th Ward has been short-changed,
neglected and not very well represented for
at least the last 30 years. A community does
not get run-down like ours over night and
it will not be built back up over night, so
“hurry-up patience” is needed.
Each Alderman has an annual $1,320,000 menu budget
to improve their ward, and hereʼs the cost of each item per
block or project: residential street resurfacing ($34,500);
residential alley resurfacing ($26,500); concrete alley
($95,000); alley speed hump ($1,050); sidewalk replacement
($62,500); curb & gutter replacement ($59,000); residential
street traffic circle ($11,000); residential street Cul-de-Sac
($25,000); diagonal parking ($65,000); residential street
bump outs ($11,000); street speed hump ($3,500);
guardrail installations ($500/10ʼ section); bollard installations
($650/bollard); street light pole painting ($300/pole); street
light upgrade ($400/fixture); residential street lighting
($65,000); arterial street lighting ($126,000); ornamental
fixture “piggyback” ($2,000/pole); arterial street ornamental
lighting ($157,000); traffic signal modernization/installation

IS IMPORTANT
The Importance Of Census Data
Every year the federal government allocates more than
$400 billion to states and communities based, in part,
on census data.
Census data is used to determine locations for retail
stores, schools, hospitals, new housing developments
and other community facilities.
Census data determine boundaries for state and local
legislative and congressional districts.
With only 10 questions, the 2010 Census questionnaire
takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Households are asked to provide key demographic
information, including: whether a housing unit is rented
or owned; the address of the residence; and the
names, genders, ages and races of others living in
the household.
By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual's
responses with anyone, including other federal
agencies and law enforcement entities.
2010 Census - Remaining Key Dates
May - July 2010: Census takers will visit households
that did not return a questionnaire by mail. Alderman
Dixon urges you to cooperate with them.
December 31, 2010: By law, the Census Bureau
delivers population counts to the President.
March 2011: By law, the Census Bureau completes
delivery of redistricting data to the states.
