Rat Guards on the Trunks

Sheets of metal can be wrapped around the trunks of the fruit trees to keep rats from climbing into the
tree from the ground. This should only be used after trimming. Branches that are touching wires, the
home or other trees will allow the rats to travel in that way instead.

Sheet Metal Guards

Sheet metal makes it impossible for rats and squirrels to climb trees, as its smooth
surface doesn’t offer the same purchase that tree trunks do. Use a strip of sheet metal
18 to 24 inches wide, long enough to wrap around the tree plus an extra 2-inch
overlap. Run a piece of wire through both sides of the sheet metal from underneath it,
then bend the wire outward to keep the guard in place. Metal cones to protect nests
should be at 18 inches in radius, mounted all the way around a tree and bent downward
toward the ground.

Sheet Metal Placement

If your problem is rats, you should place your sheet metal band about 4 feet off the
ground, as rats can only jump about 3 feet. However, if your problem is squirrels, your
band will need to be significantly higher to prevent them jumping up, between 6 and 8
feet. When attaching the sheet metal to the tree, keep the attachment wires several
feet away from the tree’s canopy, as rats or squirrels may use wires to access higher
parts of the tree. Place sheet metal cones 3 feet off the ground below a nesting site.

Installing the Band

Metal bands should be placed at least 4 feet up the trunk, as some rats can jump as high as 3
feet. Wrap the metal band around the palm's trunk, but don't nail it to the tree -- this will damage
the tree. Instead, place a wire against the trunk vertically; then, as you wrap the band around
the tree, ensure you place it over the wire. Secure the band in place by bending the ends of the
wire over the metal band. The wire should be a few inches longer than the band is wide to
ensure the ends are long enough to bend over the band. The band should be snug enough so
that it won't slip down, but not so tight that it cuts into the tree. Check the band occasionally, and
adjust it as needed.

Sheet Metal Shield

A band of sheet metal, wrapped around the trunk, can prevent climbing pests from gaining a
foothold. But don't think you have to encase the entire trunk in shimmering gray -- it only takes
one strip of metal between 12 and 24 inches wide to be effective. Palm trees that have multiple
or clumping trunks, on the other hand, should be protected by a 2-foot-tall metal wall that, when
inserted into the ground, surrounds all of the trunks.
