a. __llustrate and describe the flame propagation process in a spark-
ignition (SI) engine from ignition to flame termination
[8 marks]
b, An Otto cycle SI engine with a compression ratio of 9 has a peak
cycle temperature and pressure of 2800 K and 9000 kPa respectively.
Cylinder pressure when the exhaust valve opens is 460 kPa and
exhaust manifold pressure is 100 kPa.
i Determine the exhaust temperature during the exhaust stroke
and the percent of exhaust residual after each cycle,
[6 marks}
ii, Determine the velocity out of the exhaust valve when the valve
first opens and the maximum theoretical temperature in the
exhaust as the velocity is dissipated

Illustrate and describe the details of fuel injection and combustion
processes in a compression-ignition (Cl) engine.
[6 marks]
Some engines are designed with two sparkplugs per cylinder. If
everything else is kept the same, evaluate the 2 spark plug design by
TWO (2) advantages and TWO (2) disadvantages the two-sparkplug
design for modem engine operation.
[6 marks]
A 3.2:liter SI engine is to be designed with bowl-in-piston combustion
chambers. With a central spark plug and combustion at TDC, this
gives a flame travel distance of B/4 where B is the bore of the engine.
The engine is to operate with an average piston speed of 8 m/s anda
burn angle of 25° of engine crank. The stroke of the engine,
S = 0.95 B. Determine the average flame speed in mis if the design
is for an in-line four-cylinder engine.
