3) A four-cylinder, 2.4 liter engine operates on a four-stroke cycle at 3,200 RPM.

The
compression ratio is 9.4:1, the connecting rod length r = 18 cm, and the bore-stroke are related as
S = 1.06B. Calculate:

(a) Clearance volume of one cylinder [cm3 , L and in3 ].

(b) Bore and stroke [cm and in].

(c) Average piston speed [m/s and ft/s].

4) A 1,500 cm3 , four-stroke cycle, four-cylinder CI engine, operating at 3,000 RPM, produces
48 kW of brake power. Volumetric efficiency is 92 % and air-fuel ratio of 21:1. Calculate:

(a) Rate of air flow into engine [kg/s].

(b) Brake specific fuel consumption [g/kWh].

(c) Mass rate of exhaust flow [kg/h].

(d) Brake output per displacement [kW/L].

5) An in-line six, 3.3-liter CI engine using light diesel fuel at an air-fuel ratio of 20:1 operates on
an air-standard Duel cycle. Half the fuel can be considered burned at constant volume, and half
at constant pressure with combustion efficiency of 100 %. Cylinder conditions at the start of the
compression are 60 °C and 101 kPa. Compression ratio is 14:1. Calculate:

(a) Temperature at each state of the cycle [K].

(b) Pressure at each state of the cycle [kPa].

(c) Cut off ratio.

(d) Pressure ratio.

(e) Indicated thermal efficiency [%]. (f) Heat added during combustion [kJ/kg].

(g) Net indicated work [kJ/kg].
