The Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time
How is going to church in the Deep South different from going to church in the Northeast? One thing is is the custom
of inviting friends and neighbors to go with us to church. Growing up in upstate New York, I never recall as much as
a vague suggestion that someone outside of our family might attend Mass with us. In the Deep South, it’s a regular
thing to invite, encourage, even prod friends and neighbors to go to your church with you.
In Boston, we have a lot of people who have stopped going to Mass for one reason or another. People sometimes feel
awkward showing up out of the blue after a long absence. Sometimes they are worried that they will be sitting in
someone’s “reserved” seat, even though we don’t do that anymore. At Arch Street, we have a LOT of one-time, out-
of-town visitors at Mass, so taking someone else’s seat should be even less of a worry.
Some of the people who have stopped going to Mass would attend if they received a friendly invitation to do so. Can
you think of anyone who might be open to an invitation from you? If you are hesitant to make such an offer to
someone, remind yourself that, in general, it feels really good to receive an invitation. The implicit message is “I
want to spend time with you. I want you to be in our group.” It’s completely a compliment to be on the receiving end
of any such invitation.
If any one of us were away from church for a long time, we would feel very positive about an “insider” extending that
offer of communal prayer to us. By the way, today’s Gospel is “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
Finally, we have some dates coming up which have something of a Welcome Home feel to them. We Catholics all
tend to like Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, and Easter. They are particularly good occasions to welcome the person
who has been away from church for a long time.
