Maximum Time: 3 Hours MODEL QUESTION PAPER-I Maximum Marks: 100

Instructions to Candidates:
(i) Answer FIVE FULL Questions.
(ii) Assume missing data if any.
(iii) Use of IS: 800 and SP 6(1) /Steel tables is
permitted.

1. a) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of steel structures. [06 Marks]

b) Sketch different types of bolted connections. [04 Marks]

c) Find the efficiency of the lap joint shown in Figure 1(c). Use HSFG M20 bolts of [10 Marks]
property class 8.8. Take ultimate tensile strength of steel as 410 MPa.

c) The dimensions of a plate bracket bolted to the face of the stanchion are given in Figure [10 Marks]
2(c). Determine the resultant stress in the most heavily loaded bolt of the group,
allowing for both torsional and direct shear. M20 bolts are used.

3. a) What are the advantages and disadvantages of welded connections? [08 Marks]

b) An I section bracket is connected to a column by welds as shown in Figure 3(b). [12 Marks]
Determine the load W which can be safely carried. The permissible stress in the weld is
110 N/mm2. The size of weld is 10 mm.

4 a) Explain the types of welds. [05 Marks]

b) Two plates are connected to form a fillet joint using 6mm weld. Welding is provided on [15 Marks]
three sides with a lap of 300mm as shown in Figure 4(a). Find the strength of the joint.
If welding is provided on all four sides Figure 4(b), determine the strength of the joint.
Also find the percentage increase in the strength. Use Fe 410 steel with yield stress 250
MPa. Assume shop welding.

5. a) Explain the use of Lug angle with a sketch. [04 Marks]

b) Write a short note on failure of tension members with sketches. [06 Marks]

c) Design a single angle tension member to carry a design tensile load of 200 kN. Gusset [10 Marks]
plate is of 6mm thickness. Adopt 20 mm diameter black bolt for connection.

OR
6 a) Design a column using two ISHB sections to carry an axial service load of 3000 kN. [20 Marks]
The column is restrained against translation at both ends, but not restrained against
rotation. Unsupported height of the column = 4 m. Design a suitable lacing and batten
system. Design the simple slab base connection on a concrete pedestal of M30 grade.
Grade of steel is Fe410. Sketch the details.

7 a) Design a gusseted base and a on a concrete pedestal for a column to carry a factored [20 Marks]
axial load 3000kN. The column is ISHB 400@ 759.3 N/m with two cover plates 250 X
20mm on either side. The column is to be supported on concrete pedestal to be built
with M25 concrete.

b) A roof of a hall measuring 6mx15m consists of 150 mm thick RC slab supported on [16 Marks]
steel I-section spaced at 3m c/c. The wall supporting the roof all-round is 230mm thick.
The finishing load on the roof is 1 kN/m2 and live load is 2 kN/m2. Design the steel
beam for a span 6m along shorter direction of the hall, and apply the necessary checks
on design.

9 a) Explain upper bound, lower bound and uniqueness theorems. [10 Marks]
b) Determine the plastic moment capacity and shape factor of the section shown in Figure [10 Marks]
9(b)

OR
10. a) Explain the plastic analysis of structures. What do you understand by “Plastic hinge”? [06 Marks]
b) With neat sketches, explain different mechanisms considered in plastic analysis of [04 Marks]
structures.
c) Analyze the continuous beam ABC subjected to working loads shown in Figure 10(c) [10 Marks]
and determine the plastic moment. Adopt load factor of 1.70.
