Abstract

Dhanvayāsa is a small spiny undershrub known as Fagonia cretica Linn. (Family Zygophyl-
laceae). It is used by Ayurveda physicians as well as folklore used for management of different
diseased conditions. This plant is highlighted for compound formulations in classical texts of
Ayurveda. It possesses Tikta, Kaṣāya, Madhur rasa; Laghu, Sara guṇa; Śīta vīrya. In this review,
an endeavour has been made to explore the therapeutic utilities of Dhanvayāsa. Its compound
formulations are compiled from 7 different compendia and presented in a systemic manner.
Whole plant has been used as an ingredient of about 201 compound formulations. Maximum
formulations are found in Charak Samhita and Yogratnakar. The drug is used in 16 different
dosages forms, where Kvātha (Decoction), Ghrita (Ghee) and Cūrṇa (Powder) are found to be
maximum number. Majority of formulations containing Dhanvayāsa are indicated in Jvara (Fe-
ver) followed by Kāsa (respiratory disease), Arśa (Haemorrhoids) and Śvāsa.

Key words: Dhanvayāsa, formulations, Jvara, Kvātha.
