Why do we need work method statements?

The purpose of a work method statement is:

• to outline a safe method of work for a specific job

• to provide an induction document that workers must read and
understand before starting a job
• to meet legal requirements, that is, hazard identification and
control
• to program work, materials, time, staff, and to anticipate possible
problems
• to use as a tool in quality assurance.
The employer or subcontractor must detail how they will
do the work. As an example, where a person is required
to work in a trench greater than 1.5 metres deep, the
work method statement may say:

To prevent collapse of the trench I/we will apply benching

to all sides of the trench and at an angle of no steeper
than 45 degrees to the horizontal. When I/we bench a
trench, the vertical trench side, below the benched
portion, will not exceed 1.5 metres in height. The
benching will be checked at least daily to ensure its
continued effectiveness.
The completed work method statement must be signed and dated by
the employer or subcontractor and the builder before the work being
detailed commences.
