INTERVIEW REPORT
After conducting an interview with an employee who worked at PT SELIM TEXTILE,
we got some information about the need to use English, both in the division and in the company.
Our interviewee is Mr.Usep Saepuloh, he works in the WWTP division which stands for Waste
Water Treatment Plan. He was assigned to become a leader in the division and has worked for
approximately 7 years. His main job is to arrange planning to treat chemicals from textile waste.
Meanwhile, this company is a company owned by a Korean, which produces various types of
textile materials, and sells its products domestically and abroad. Even so, this company does
not hold an English test for prospective employees in the selection stage of entering the
company, nor does Mr. Usep.
This company does not require its employees to be able to speak English. English is not
used in daily coversations in the company. Employees use regional languages and Indonesian
language to communicate with fellow employees and with bosses. There are no special efforts
from companies such as conducting seminars or training to improve the English skills of their
employees. When there are clients who come from abroad, there is a special translator who
helps translate his/her words. Mr. Usep said that employees who were unable to speak English
were not involved in activities or work related to English. Furthermore, there is no special
treatment such as promotion for employees who are able to speak English.
Mr. Usep uses English in three main activities. First, he uses English when clients from
abroad order products. Some clients come directly to the company, but a few of them also send
orders via email. Although in communicating with clients who came directly to the company,
Mr. Usep was helped by the translator, but Mr. Usep was still required to be able to speak
English as best he could. Whereas in reading the order sent by the client via email in English,
Mr. Usep translates it himself with the help of a translation machine. Second, Mr. Usep uses
English when submitting reports during the audit. The audit is carried out about three times a
year. The things that Mr. Usep reported in the audit are the impact of waste disposal for the
environment, society, and others. Although written reports use Indonesian, but as many
auditors comes from abroad, Mr. Usep must be able to explain and answer auditor’s questions
in English. Finally, Mr. Usep has the duty to translate the classification of chemicals and safety
standard procedures. When receiving items such as chemical substances from suppliers, hazard
classification texts and handling methods are written in English. Mr. usep as leader must
translate it before assigning his men to work. In addition, procedures for safety standards are
also written in English and must be translated too.
Mr. Usep concluded that English is very important in his field of work. Although the
company does not require him to be able to speak English, many activities and tasks require
him to be able to understand and speak English. The most important English language skills
that he need to develop are speaking and reading because these two skills are closely related to
his tasks. Mr. Usep wants to develop his English skills but time constraints impede his desire.
