FOREWORD

The d e c l a s s i f i c a t i o n of a number of t e c h n i c a l documents which con-

t a i n missile aerodynamic d a t a and t h e need t o f a c i l i t a t e t h e dissemina-

t i o n of t h i s d a t a t o p o t e n t i a l u s e r s prompted t h e work reported h e r e i n .

It was f e l t t h a t t h e t a s k could have educational b e n e f i t s t o s e n i o r

l e v e l aerospace engineering s t u d e n t s and could be incorporated i n t o

t h e i r r e g u l a r academic work. Those s t u d e n t s who p a r t i c i p a t e d received

academic c r e d i t f o r Aeronautical Problems 1 and 2; Aerospace Design 1

and 2; and Missile.Aerodynamics. P a r t i c i p a t i o n w a s on a v o l u n t e e r b a s i s

s i n c e t h e Problems and Design courses are i n d i v i d u a l e f f o r t type l a b o r a t o r y

courses and M i s s i l e Aerodynamics is a s e n i o r level t e c h n i c a l elective.

Altogether some 1 5 t o 20 s t u d e n t s have been involved.

A g r a n t from t h e National Aeronautics and Space Administration pro-

vided t h e necessary funds f o r class materials, f i e l d t r i p s , and f o r

p r e p a r a t i o n and p u b l i c a t i o n of t h e r e p o r t . M r . Leroy Spearman of NASA's

Langley Research Center h a s served as Technical O f f i c e r f o r t h i s grant

and provided t h e documents which were used.

This f i n a l r e p o r t , Analysis and Compilation of Missile Aerodynamic

Data, is presented i n two volumes. Volume I contains t h e a n a l y s i s and

compilation of d a t a and Volume 11, which w i l l be compiled by D r . John

E. Burkhalter, w i l l contain t h e r e s u l t s of some performance analyses

based on t h e d a t a .

An i n t e r i m r e p o r t w a s submitted December 31, 1974, which contained

a compilation of t h e l o n g i t u d i n a l d a t a . The i n t e r i m r e p o r t has received

SUMMARY

This summary document w a s prepared i n o r d e r t o f a c i l i t a t e dissemina-

t i o n of a l a r g e amount of missile aerodynamic d a t a which has r e c e n t l y

been d e c l a s s i f i e d . Only summary d a t a are presented i n t h i s r e p o r t , but

a l i s t of r e f e r e n c e documents provides sources of d e t a i l e d data.

Most of t h e c o n f i g u r a t i o n s considered are s u i t a b l e f o r highly

maneuverable a i r - t o - a i r o r surface-to-air missiles; however, d a t a f o r

a f e w air-to-surface, c r u i s e missile, and one p r o j e c t i l e c o n f i g u r a t i o n

are a l s o presented.

The Mach number range of the d a t a is from about 0.2 t o 4.63; how-

ever, d a t a f o r most c o n f i g u r a t i o n s cover only a portion of t h i s range.

INTRODUCTION

Recently a number of t e c h n i c a l documents containing missile aero-

dynamic d a t a published by t h e Langley Research Center of t h e National

Aeronautics and Space Administration have been d e c l a s s i f i e d . I n order

t o f a c i l i t a t e dissemination of t h e d a t a contained i n t h e s e documents,

t h i s summary r e p o r t was prepared. It w a s not intended t h a t a l l of t h e

o r i g i n a l d a t a b e included, only summary p l o t s of curve s l o p e s and d a t a

s u i t a b l e f o r comparison of t h e r e l a t i v e merits of t h e various configura-

t i o n s considered. A l i s t of t h e r e f e r e n c e documents is included t o

provide a source of more d e t a i l e d d a t a f o r c o n f i g u r a t i o n s of i n t e r e s t .

Some of t h e documents summarized were not previously c l a s s i f i e d but

were included t o give a more complete coverage of t h e c o n f i g u r a t i o n s t h a t

have been t e s t e d a t Langley. I n a l l , t h i r t y documents have been sum-

marized. Some of t h e s e were themselves compilations of d a t a t h a t had

been r e p o r t e d previously. Data from one of t h e documents, TM X-348, h a s

n o t been included h e r e i n because of i t s l i m i t e d scope, and because of the

d i f f i c u l t y i n p r e s e n t i n g summary d a t a f o r t h e numerous c o n f i g u r a t i o n s

tested. It is p r i m a r i l y a r e p o r t of a parametrfc study of t h e s t a t i c

s t a b i l i t y c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of a series of cone-cylinder bodies w i t h v a r i o u s

afterbody c o n f i g u r a t i o n s - f l a r e s , f i n s , and b o a t t a i l s .

Most of t h e c o n f i g u r a t i o n s r e p o r t e d h e r e i n are s u i t a b l e f o r h i g h l y

maneuverable a i r - t o - a i r o r surface-to-air missiles; however, d a t a f o r a

few air-to-surface, c r u i s e missile, and one p r o j e c t i l e c o n f i g u r a t i o n are

a l s o presented. The Mach number range of t h e d a t a is g e n e r a l l y from

about 1.5 t o 4.63; however, d a t a f o r some c o n f i g u r a t i o n s extend t o

subsonic Mach numbers.

APPARATUS AND TESTS

The d a t a summarized i n t h i s r e p o r t w e r e obtained o r i g i n a l l y i n t h e

Langley 8-foot t r a n s o n i c p r e s s u r e t u n n e l and t h e Langley Unitary Plan

wind tunnel. These tunnels are v a r i a b l e - p r e s s u r e , continuous flow f a c i l -

ities. The & f o o t t u n n e l has a s l o t t e d t e s t s e c t i o n which i s about 2.44

meters square and has a Mach number range from about 0.20 to 1.30.
The Unitary Plan wind t u n n e l has two test s e c t i o n s , each about 1.22

meters square and about 2.13 meters long. The nozzle l e a d i n g t o each

test s e c t i o n i s of t h e asymmetric s l i d i n g block type which permits a

continuous v a r i a t i o n i n Mach number from about 1.47 t o 2.86 i n t h e low

Mach number test s e c t i o n and from 2.3 t o 4.7 i n t h e high Mach number

test section.

The Reynolds number at which t h e tests were conducted v a r i e d from

about 6.56 x 1 06 p e r meter t o 9.84 x 106 p e r meter. Boundary-layer

t r a n s i t i o n s t r i p s were used on t h e models.

Aerodynamic f o r c e s and moments were measured by means o f a s i x -

component e l e c t r i c a l strain-gage balance l o c a t e d w i t h i n t h e model and,

i n t u r n , r i g i d l y f a s t e n e d t o a sting-support system. Angles of a t t a c k

were c o r r e c t e d f o r s t i n g and balance d e f l e c t i o n due t o aerodynamic loads

and f o r t u n n e l a i r f l o w misalignment. The r e s u l t s have been a d j u s t e d t o

correspond t o free-stream s t a t i c p r e s s u r e a c t i n g over the model base.

Since cruciform c o n f i g u r a t i o n s may f l y with wings i n t h e v e r t i c a l

and h o r i z o n t a l p l a n e s o r w i t h wings i n 45" p l a n e s , d a t a a t both Q =O"


and 4 = 45" are p r e s e n t e d f o r many of these c o n f i g u r a t i o n s . The long-

i t u d i n a l aerodynamic c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s were similar i n both a t t i t u d e s

except f o r i n c r e a s e d p i t c h c o n t r o l e f f e c t i v e n e s s a t Q = 45" due t o

d e f l e c t i o n of f o u r s u r f a c e s i n s t e a d of two.

Maximum body cross-sectional area and maximum body diameter are

used as r e f e r e n c e area and l e n g t h , r e s p e c t i v e l y , f o r t h e aerodynamic

coefficients i n this report. I n one case (TM X-1538) where t h e body w a s

n o t a body of r e v o l u t i o n , t h e maximum f r o n t a l area and an e q u i v a l e n t

maximum body diameter are used. Care should be e x e r c i s e d when comparing

the d a t a i n t h i s r e p o r t w i t h t h a t i n t h e o r i g i n a l documents s i n c e con-

v e r s i o n of some d a t a w a s necessary because d i f f e r e n t r e f e r e n c e areas and

l e n g t h s were used.

The l o n g i t u d i n a l aerodynamic c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s are presented r e l a t i v e

t o a s t a b i l i t y - a x i s system while d i r e c t i o n a l and l a t e r a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s

are relative t o a body-axis system. Figure 1 shows t h e axes systems.

I n one case (TM X-846) t h e r e w a s i n s u f f i c i e n t d a t a t o convert t o t h e

s t a b i l i t y - a x i s system. I n t h a t one case, t h e l o n g i t u d i n a l d a t a are a l s o

presented r e l a t i v e t o t h e body-axis system. The moment r e f e r e n c e c e n t e r

is shown on each model drawing included i n t h e Data Summary. Drawings

of model c o n f i g u r a t i o n s were g e n e r a l l y d u p l i c a t e d d i r e c t l y from t h e

o r i g i n a l r e p o r t s ; t h u s , n o t a l l model dimensions are given i n t h e I n t e r -

n a t i o n a l System of Units (SI). I n some c a s e s where new drawings were

necessary, model dimensions were converted t o t h e S I system.

c o n t a i n s a r e f e r e n c e t o t h e o r i g i n a l r e p o r t from which t h e d a t a were taken.

and care must be e x e r c i s e d when comparing various c o n f i g u r a t i o n s . I n

some cases t h e r o l l c o n t r o l d e f l e c t i o n i s t h e a l g e b r a i c d i f f e r e n c e

( a b s o l u t e sum) of t h e s u r f a c e d e f l e c t i o n s , while o t h e r s use t h e average

of t h e d e f l e c t i o n s . I n t h i s r e p o r t a l l t h e c o n t r o l d a t a have been pre-

sented i n terms of t h e average of t h e s u r f a c e d e f l e c t i o n s . Since, f o r

r o l l , t h e c o n t r o l s u r f a c e s are d e f l e c t e d d i f f e r e n t i a l l y but e q u a l l y i n

DATA ANALYSIS

L i n e a r i t y of d a t a - The range a t a n g l e of a t t a c k f o r which t h e d a t a

can be assunred t o be l i n e a r varies from f2' f o r some c o n f i g u r a t i o n s t o

212' f o r o t h e r s . The l i f t - c u r v e s l o p e s tend t o increase with angle of

a t t a c k w h i l e they decrease w i t h i n c r e a s i n g Mach number a t s u p e r s o n i c

speeds. The s l o p e of t h e pitching-moment curve i n some c a s e s i n c r e a s e s

with a n g l e of a t t a c k , while i n o t h e r s it decreases. I n a l l cases C

The n o n l i n e a r i t y of the d a t a makes t h e use of curve s l o p e s t o c a l -

c u l a t e missile performance q u e s t i o n a b l e when used over a complete

trajectory. M i s s i l e performance c a l c u l a t i o n s would be more a c c u r a t e i f

equations r e p r e s e n t i n g t h e aerodynamic c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s as f u n c t i o n s of

Mach number and a n g l e of a t t a c k were used. The n o n l i n e a r i t y of t h e d a t a

t o formulate equations t o f i t the d a t a .

E f f e c t s of wing planform shape, s i z e , and l o c a t i o n - Some of the

o r i g i n a l documents were r e p o r t s of design s t u d i e s i n which v a r i o u s con-

f i g u r a t i o n parameters were i n v e s t i g a t e d . For example, TM X-1839 r e p o r t s

wing w a s a l s o v a r i e d . The summary included i n t h i s r e p o r t c o n t a i n s o n l y

t h e d a t a f o r t h e t h r e e mid-sized wings.

Canards and t a i l c o n t r o l s u r f a c e s - Two of t h e o r i g i n a l documents

compared canard and t a i l c o n t r o l s u r f a c e s . TM X-1834 r e p o r t s t h e r e s u l t s

of an i n v e s t i g a t i o n of t h e e f f e c t s of v a r i o u s l o n g i t u d i n a l p o s i t i o n s of

canard c o n t r o l s u r f a c e s and t a i l c o n t r o l s u r f a c e s on t h e same wing-body

combination. Also included i n t h e r e p o r t are t h e e f f e c t s of t h e v a r i o u s

components on t h e aerodynamic c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s . In t h i s summary r e p o r t

only t h e d a t a f o r one canard Configuration and one t a i l c o n f i g u r a t i o n

from TM X-1834 are included. I n TM X-2780, t h e body is t h e same f o r t h e

canard c o n f i g u r a t i o n and t h e t a i l c o n f i g u r a t i o n but t h e wings are d i f -

ferent. The e f f e c t of a b l u n t o r c o n i c a l forebody is a l s o r e p o r t e d . It

w a s found t h a t d i f f e r e n t i a l l y d e f l e c t e d canard c o n t r o l s were n o t e f f e c -

t i v e as r o l l c o n t r o l devices because a c o n t r o l r e v e r s a l r e s u l t e d a t low

angles of a t t a c k . The t a i l c o n t r o l s u r f a c e s were e f f e c t i v e as r o l l con-

t r o l devices; however, some adverse yawing moments d i d r e s u l t .

Various t a i l c o n t r o l configurations - An i n v e s t i g a t i o n of various

t a i l - c o n t r o l s u r f a c e configurations w a s reported i n TM X-71984. The

t a i l - c o n t r o l configurations i n v e s t i g a t e d were t h e cruciform i n c l i n e d 45"

t o t h e h o r i z o n t a l and v e r t i c a l planes, t h e conventional a i r p l a n e type

with an upper v e r t i c a l f i n and t h e i n v e r t e d type with lower v e r t i c a l f i n .

The cruciform t a i l configuration e x h i b i t s t h e g r e a t e s t pitch-control

e f f e c t i v e n e s s ; however, r e l a t i v e l y l a r g e nonlinear p i t c h i n g moment

c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s are experienced due t o t h e e f f e c t s of t h e wing wake. The

lower vertical f i n shows a s u b s t a n t i a l i n c r e a s e i n c o n t r o l e f f e c t i v e n e s s

as angle of attack i s increased, whereas t h e configuration with t h e upper

v e r t i c a l f i n e x h i b i t s a s m a l l decrease.

A summary of t h e configurations considered i n t h e o r i g i n a l documents

i s given i n t h e next s e c t i o n . Not a l l t h e configurations are shown,

only t y p i c a l examples. These examples were chosen on t h e b a s i s of various

configuration c l a s s i f i c a t i o n such as :

wing, t a i l , o r canard. Hinge l i n e s are
