Intermediate Fluid Mechanics (MechEng 420)

Spring 2019
Assignment #2
Due date: March 4 (Monday)

1
1) Does the velocity field 𝑣𝑟 = 4 (1 − ) 𝐶𝑜𝑠 𝜃 , 𝑣𝜃 = −4 (1 +
𝑟2
1
𝑟2
) 𝑆𝑖𝑛 𝜃 , 𝑣𝑧 = 0 represent a possible incompressible flow?

2) Consider a steady, two-dimensional, incompressible flow of a

Newtonian fluid in which the velocity field is known: u = -2 x y,
v = y2 – x2, w = 0. Show that it satisfies the Navier-Stokes equations.
Comment on the form the pressure distribution will have.

3) A constant-thickness film of viscous liquid flows in laminar motion

down a plate inclined at angle θ, as shown below. The velocity profile
is u = C y (2h - y) , v = w = 0

a) Comment on the pressure inside the liquid and its relation with the
atmospheric pressure.
b) Find the constant C in terms of the specific weight and viscosity
and the angle θ. (Hint: use N.S. equations.)
c) After integrating the x-direction velocity along the y direction, find
the volume flux Q per unit width in terms of these parameters.

4) The compact form of the Navier-Stokes equations is given as

𝐷𝑉
𝜌 ⃗ + 𝜌𝑔
= − ∇ 𝑝 + 𝜇 ∇2 𝑉 ⃗
𝐷𝑡

Show that this form is identical to the three-equation set derived in the
class for x, y and z directions.

5) Develop expressions for volume flow-rate across any flow cross-
section for the Couette flow (Case I) and the pressure-driven slit flow
(Case II) done in the class.

6) Develop an expression for the wall shear-stress for the pressure-driven

slit flow (Case II) done in the class.
