New Indian HC to NZ brings huge reputation

of excellence in e-governance and trade

areer diplomat Muktesh
Kumar Pardeshi has been
appointed as the new Indian
High Commissioner to New Zealand.
He is currently posted as the
Ambassador of India to Mexico
and is expected to take up the new
assignment shortly.
The office of Ministry of External
Affairs (MEA), India confirmed
the new appointment through an
official press release on Wednesday,
February 27.
Before his current posting as
Ambassador of India to Mexico, Mr
Pardeshi had played an instrumental
role in the transformation of Passport
services in India (12 million in 2015).
‘New Zealand is a familiar
place.’
Speaking to The Indian Weekender
from Mexico, Mr Pardeshi excitedly
said, “New Zealand is a familiar
place for me as a diplomat.
“I had twice visited New Zealand
about 15 years ago in my then role as
Deputy Director in the MEA looking
after the entire South Pacific region.
“I still remember that during those
days we had about 3000 international
students visiting from India and
the relatively small size of Indian
community living in Auckland.
“However, it’s great to know that
now that number of Indian students
has increased to around 30,000, and
a vibrant Indian community living all
around in New Zealand.
“This is a testimonial to our
growing bilateral relations between
the two countries, and I look forward
to further contribute in expanding
our bilateral ties,” Mr Pardeshi said.
Responding to The Indian
Weekender’s question of the top three
priorities in his new role as the High
Commissioner to New Zealand, Mr
Pardeshi said, “Expanding political
dialogue between the two countries,
improving bilateral trade and
investment relations, and expanding
people-to-people links between the
two countries.”
“In that context, I look forward
to the support of our Kiwi-Indian
community in fulfilling these
objectives,” Mr Pardeshi said.
A reputation of excellence
in e-governance
Mr Pardeshi, a 1991 batch Indian
Foreign Services (IFS) officer,
brings with him a
massive reputation
of excellence in
e-governance.
In his previous role as the Joint
Secretary (Passport Seva Project)
and Chief Passport Officer of India
for about five years, Mr Pardeshi led
the Passport Seva Project in various
capacities, and his leadership role
was widely acclaimed.
Passport Seva Project eventually
became the recipient of the National
Award on e-Governance (Gold)
2014-15, Web Ratna (Platinum)
Award 2014, Computer Society of
India-Nihilent e-Governance Award
of Excellence 2011-12 and e-INDIA
Governance Award 2013.
The Project was also awarded
three ISO certifications, namely
ISO 9001:2008, 20000:2011 and
27000:2013 in 2015.

cent growth rate in bilateral trade
between Mexico and India under his
watchful eyes.
"During my current tenure, India-
Mexico 'Privileged Partnership' has
seen huge advancement with bilateral
trade increased from $5.9 bn in 2015
to $ 10.1bn in 2018 registering 70
per cent growth over three years," Mr
Pardeshi told The Indian Weekender.
It is important to note that Mr
Pardeshi named Ambassador of
the Year 2018 for his contributions
by Mexican diplomatic journal El
Mundo Internacional.
Brief Profile
An alumnus of Delhi University,
Mr Pardeshi holds a Bachelor and
and Delhi School of Economics
respectively (both with the first
position in the University) before
entering the diplomatic service
in 1991.
In a diplomatic career spanning
over 28 years, Mr Pardeshi has
served in numerous postings in
the Ministry and overseas stations
around the world.
Relevant to this part of the world
– Indo Pacific region – Mr Pardeshi
has also served as Minister/Deputy
Head of Mission at the Embassy
of India in Jakarta (2007-10) and
Deputy Secretary (South East Asia
& Pacific) in the Ministry of External
Affairs, New Delhi.
It is expected that Mr Pardeshi
would be bringing his vast
experience, especially proven
excellence in e-governance, to further
enhance the reach out of the Indian
High Commission of New Zealand
with the Kiwi-Indian community,
along with strengthening the already
growing relationship between New
Zealand and India.
Mr Pardeshi is married to Rakhi
Pardeshi, and they have two
daughters, with one studying in
King’s College, London and the
other working for Confederation
of Indian Industry (CII) in New
Delhi. Mrs Pardeshi is engaged in
social and charitable activities. She
is presently serving as President
of the Association of Diplomatic
Spouses, Mexico City for two terms
(2018-19).

‘Let’s debate the Capital Gains

Tax,’ says Prime Minister

rime Minister Jacinda Ardern has
reassured New Zealanders that she is
listening to people’s concerns about a
proposed capital gains tax, and no decisions
have been made yet.
She was speaking at her post-cabinet press
conference on Monday, February 25, where
she called out the opposition for making
“inflammatory statements” about the Tax
Working Group’s (TWG’s) recommendations
released last Thursday on Capital gains Tax.
Ms Ardern although stopped short of naming,
but was quite clearly referring to a statement
made by National leader Simon Bridges. “The
notion that it’s an attack on the Kiwi way of
life, which I think is quite a broad, sweeping
statement,” Ms Ardern affirmed.
Earlier Mr Bridges had taken to Twitter to the
proposed tax “an assault on the Kiwi way of
life”, adding that he will “fight it every step of

that requires income tax to be paid on any gains
from residential property that was sold within
two years of purchase. This government had
increased the period to five years.
Expert opinion is divided
L ike everywhere else in life, opinions are
social and economic progress.
Expectedly, Opposition will try to blow it out
of proportion, and the government will be keen
to underplay when talking about the merits of
introducing capital gains tax.
Public opinion, if a Newshub Reid-Research
poll (February 19) is accurate to capture the
mood of Kiwi voters, has found the majority of
voters do not want Capital Gain Tax.
54 per cent had said no, and 14 per cent didn’t
know, with 32 per cent saying yes for a CGT.
However, this would be inconsequential as
rarely would there be overwhelming acceptance
for new taxation suggested by any government.
So governments and political parties all around
the world act on their convictions and self-
professed values.
How’s the political courage?
M any pundits are wondering if the Labour

he Tax Working Group is proposing CGT

in many quarters.
Governments all around the world tax their
citizens mostly for key reasons of raising
revenue to finance government spending, to
manage aggregate demand, to help meet the
government’s economic objectives, and last
but not the least to change the distribution of
income and wealth.
Indeed, the Labour government’s current
push for CGT is not much driven by fiscal
motives as it is for the motives of fairness and
divided, especially those of the experts
and commentators. While several economists
and academicians argue that NZ is already very
late in comparison to its peers in Europe, North
Atlantic and trans-Tasman in having a CGT in
place.
Several home-based experts argue that
the idea of having a comprehensive system
of taxing all capital gains will have more
debilitating, than enabling effect on overall
New Zealand economy and society. Above all,
the idea of taxing capital gains might trifle the
spirit of saving and investing that forms the
Party would have the much-needed
political courage to walk the nation through
Capital Gains Tax in the 2020 elections.
Based on the current political direction and
milieu, it seems that there is a lot of conviction
and admiration for the CGT, especially in
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, to put it on the
table for 2020 elections.
The scale of the housing crisis and growing
generation of renters, who primarily are shaping
the current political environment, is looking for
a Robinhood type tax, regardless of the fact if
they will actually reap any benefit from that
tax-revenue.

very few New Zealanders will be

The Government’s Tax Working Group’s
recommendations reach deep into our lives for
a bigger clip of the ticket.
It would do that by imposing one of the
highest rates of Capital Gains Tax in the world,
allowing the Government to reap $8.3 billion
extra in its first five years from ordinary Kiwis.
Very little escapes its net - small business
owners, farmers, investors, bach and lifestyle
owners would all be hit.
Even the family home could be carved up
for tax purposes, with Inland Revenue taking
an interest in your boarders and even your
flatmates.
After 10 years, the Government would be
taking an extra $6 billion annually from Kiwis.
The Capital Gains Tax will act as a massive
disincentive to save, invest or build a productive
business. The Government would literally be
taxing our prosperity. But we think the tax
burden should be reduced, not increased.
The Prime Minister claims this tax is about
fairness. That doesn’t cut it.
How is it fair on the small business owner
who works hard building up their business,
pays tax every single year, who creates jobs
and pays wages? The Government would take
a third of the nest egg they had intended to live
on in retirement when they sell up.

But it’s the small business owner, your local
plumber or hairdresser, who can’t move their
business offshore, and who will end up paying
the tax. It is middle New Zealand who will be

Zealander with a KiwiSaver account.
National doesn’t think that’s fair. We see
Kiwis every day in our electorates, working
hard, scrimping and saving in order to get ahead
for themselves and for their families.
Kiwis are rightly worried that a Capital Gains
Tax will affect their KiwiSaver, their retirement
savings, their small rental properties and their
farms. It will affect all Kiwis in some way.
National believes in rewarding Kiwis who
are working hard to get ahead. Those people
who risk their own money to employ others and
start a business, we don’t think you should be
taxed on your hard work.
You work hard all your life, it’s not right that
you’re taxed hard before retirement. That’s not
fair, that’s not the Kiwi way.

New Housing standards: Who has got
it right, government or opposition?

or ethnic migrants who have
been in the country for less
than a decade the recently
announced new housing standards
and the ensuing debate around it
raises an important question of who
has got it right – the government or
the opposition.
Although one’s answer to this
query would depend more on the
political views they subscribe to, it
is essential to un-clutter the political
noise around the issue for the
benefit of many in our Kiwi-Indian
community, many of whom might
be seeing first change of government
and ensuing politics in last decade.
However, what comes to mind
to new migrants is if the problem
of housing standards is a crisis at
all or if it is a crisis of the scale our
politicians would have us believe,
then why nothing substantial has
ever been done in recent memory to
address the crisis?
Is the housing standard
really a crisis?
T here seems to be an unequivocal
acceptance at the political level
that NZ housing conditions are in
shambles.
Housing Minister Phil Twyford
said, “Nearly 600,000 households
rent in New Zealand, and our rental
stock is of poorer quality than owner-
occupied homes. It’s estimated
about 200,000 families live in rental
homes that do not have a ceiling or
underfloor insulation.”

G iven the fact that there is an overwhelming
consensus that New Zealand is going
through a housing crisis, this government
has got some extra confidence that it can act
decisively, without risking much backlash from
the voters in the next elections.
In government’s view, there will not be huge
costs of implementing new housing standards
and it will not be passed on to the renters,
possibly in good faith, or based on the strength
of the market.
What is the current political-
noise?
W
hile government coalition partners
Labour and Green are busy patting their
backs for being able to bring an important, and
much-desired change, requiring landlords to
pull up their socks and deliver warm and dry
homes to the renters, the opposition is busy in
criticising the government for forcing landlords
to “foot the bill,” who will eventually pass
it on the same renters that the government is
apparently trying to help with warm and dry
homes.
Who has got it right – the
government or the opposition?
R
ight now it seems that both the government
and the opposition have failed to get it
right and are busy in projecting their views
only, without genuine interests of all New
Zealanders involved.
While National Party needs to be told that
their seemingly honest admission that nearly
half of all housing stocks in NZ are poorly
insulated is not acceptable at all in NZ – a
modern western developed economy, the
risk of not doing anything for their brand of
fiscal-conservatism is neither a good look nor
acceptable for the brand New Zealand.
Something definitely needs to be done, and
from the government, as market alone has not
fixed this anomaly on its own for a long time.
However, this government also has not got
it right, as introducing new housing standards
without footing the bill or providing any
assistance/support is unfair on landlords,
and not all of them are some suited-booted
“investors.”
Many are indeed mom and pop investors who
would not have enough cash available at their
disposal to foot the bill.
Moreover, what’s the point if renters alone
end up paying for fixing what seems to be
a problem of generations of poor housing
standards in NZ.
Anyway renters for whom this government
is claiming to bring the changes always had
the option of heating and keeping their homes
warm by spending more money on heating.
If the government is hoping that they
would be able to fix something that has been
the defining challenge of NZ housing for at
least few decades (when affordable insulation
technology truly arrived), without any
additional costs – then it is nothing more than
wishful thinking.
Right now, what government has done is
merely introduced new housing standards
with best intentions for everyone, without
much preparatory and support-system in place
to ensure that the burden is equitably shared
among all stakeholders, viz, landlords, renters,
and the government.
A more nuanced approach of offering a
time-based implementation of new housing
standards with some limited or full subsidy to
the landlords would have addressed one of the
most pervading problems of housing standards
in NZ.
Right now what is clear is that both have not
got it right.
Strong export
growth in face of
global headwinds

ecent trade statistics demonstrate the
success and resilience of New Zealand’s
export sector, Trade and Export Growth
Minister David Parker said today.
 Notwithstanding volatility in some offshore
markets, 2018 saw strong gains for our
exporters bolstered by our trade agreements,
which help grow and maintain access for our
products and services.
  New  Zealand’s goods and services exports
increased 10 per cent in dollar terms to the year
ending September 2018. Goods exports grew 7
per cent in the 2018 calendar year.
 Analysis by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Trade shows goods exports to existing
trade agreement partners increased by 9.3 per
cent in the year ending December 2018.
 Adding the new trade agreement partners
from CPTPP – Japan, Canada, Mexico and,
when it ratifies, Peru, New Zealand’s annual
goods exports to trade agreement partners
reached almost $38 billion at the end of 2018,
up from $32 billion in 2017.
  Exports to China continued to grow at a
rapid pace, with goods exports surging 20 per
cent for the year ending September. Total goods

and services exports to China increased 18 per
cent for the year ending September. Two way
trade reached $28.8 billion.
 Our exporter success reaches beyond China.
New Zealand goods and services exports to
the ASEAN six markets (Indonesia, Malaysia,
The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet
Nam) grew by 13 per cent in the year ending
September 2018.
 With CPTPP now in force, I expect exports
to be supported further through the removal of
tariffs over time on almost all New Zealand
exports to CPTPP countries.
 This includes eliminating tariffs on the more
than half a billion dollars’ worth of kiwifruit
we exported to Japan in 2018 and eliminating
tariffs on our wine exports to Canada,” David
Parker said.
 I have previously highlighted the success
of the Government’s international business
development agency, New Zealand Trade and
Enterprise, in boosting our export success.
  Of the 12,000 exporters in NZ, 5500 are
customers of NZTE including a high-focus
portfolio of 700 companies. Those 700
companies grew their international revenue by
about $3.5 billion, rising 9.2 per cent more than
the benchmark group of exporters.
This supports our efforts to move our
economy from volume to value, which will lift
our incomes and living standards.

Auckland Council
seeks fireworks ban

A
uckland Council’s Governing Body
has agreed to proceed with a request to
Government to introduce legislation to
ban the private sale and use of fireworks after
overwhelming support from Aucklanders.
Public feedback, between October and
December 2018, showed that 89 per cent of the
7,997 submissions received supported a ban on
the sale of fireworks to the general public for
private use.
Councillors Cathy Casey and Fa’anana Efeso
Collins have now been delegated to take the
matter to Ministers and members of parliament
for consideration.
Mayor Phil Goff said that the support by
Aucklanders for banning private sales of
fireworks was overwhelming and predominantly
related to the impact of fireworks on pets and
farm animals.
“There has been a clear shift in public
opinion with many people now preferring
public fireworks displays that mark New Year,
Matariki, Chinese New Year and Diwali to
private sales.
“While the Government has said that it is
not at this point ready to ban private sales, it
is important that we share this insight into
how Aucklanders feel about the issue and
encourage Government to include this in their
considerations,” said Phil Goff.
Councilor Cathy Casey says the time is now
to ban the private sale of fireworks.
“Year-round, fireworks cause unnecessary
distress and injury to people, animals, birds
and livestock and misuse of fireworks puts
huge pressure on emergency services through
unnecessary fires, property damage and injuries.
We need to protect our people from harm. The
emergency services support this and the council
already says no to fireworks in public places
such as our parks and beaches, but we have no
jurisdiction over private places.
“A ban will significantly reduce the number
of bylaw complaints about the setting off of
fireworks on private property received by
Council, significantly reducing the demand for
council resources.”
Councillor Fa’anana Efeso Collins says
that local government has a role to play in
encouraging more free and safe public firework
displays.
“Our communities love coming together
to celebrate and Auckland Council has a role
in providing for more events for communities
to celebrate and enjoy all kinds of events and
festivals.”
“Public displays mean the spectacle of
fireworks can be enjoyed by everyone while
families and pets are kept safe.”
Key themes from public feedback showed
there were concerns for the safety of people and
animals (68 per cent), the amount of noise (35
per cent), the stockpiling and use of fireworks
after Guy Fawkes Night (27 percent) and a
preference for public fireworks display only
(23 per cent).

Measles alert for Auckland

uckland Regional
Public Health Service
(ARPHS) has been
notified of a case of measles
and is asking people who may
have come in contact with
that person to watch out for
symptoms.
The person attended
Clendon Medical Centre on
three occasions on the 19th,
20th and 21st of February, and
was assessed at Middlemore
emergency department on the
21st around 5.00pm.
ARPHS will be contacting all patients who
were at the medical centre or Middlemore
Hospital who may have been exposed.
Medical Officer of Health Dr Jay Harrower
says possible exposure is limited to these two
locations at this stage. While the case caught
the illness overseas, they were not infectious on
the flight into New Zealand and have not been
in any other public places.
“We will be contacting people who have
been in the proximity of the case, but asking
anyone who has been in these two locations on
these days to be aware of the symptoms. They
should phone their doctor or call Healthline on
0800 611-116 for advice.
“If you feel unwell, please don’t just turn up.
It is important to call first, because measles is
highly infectious and you could infect others in
the waiting room,” Dr Harrower says.
“This case is not linked to the measles
cases in Otago and Canterbury this month.

vaccination (MMR) in some communities, so it
is inevitable we’ll see some measles cases this
year.
“There are measles outbreaks all over the
world at present. Close to home, an outbreak
in the Philippines has a death toll of 70. There
are also outbreaks across Europe and North
America,” Dr Harrower says.
The Ministry is advising anyone travelling
overseas to be up to date with their MMR
vaccinations. In particular, the Ministry
recommends that infants aged 6-15 months
travelling to countries where there is a current
measles outbreak be given MMR vaccine
before they travel.
The best way to prevent measles is to be
immunised on time, with two free MMR
vaccinations for all children at 15 months and
four years. Two doses of MMR vaccine is at
least 97 percent effective in preventing measles.
“You can be immunised at any time if you
have missed your two vaccinations, and it’s
particularly important for adolescents, many of
whom aren’t fully protected,” he says.

diseases and a person is contagious before the
rash appears. It is very easily transmitted from
one person to another, possibly by being in a
room where an infected person has been,” Dr
Harrower says.
Measles usually begins with a high fever,
runny nose, cough and sore red eyes, followed
by a rash starting behind the ears and spreading
to the body a few days later. One in three people
with measles will develop complications, such
as ear infections, pneumonia, diarrhoea or
rarely inflammation of the brain.
It usually takes 10 to 14 days for someone
who has caught measles to start showing
symptoms.
Dr Harrower says anyone who develops
symptoms should keep away from their
workplace and public places such as schools,
child care, shopping centres or public transport
and seek medical advice.

asking New Zealanders to listen up
to a national campaign encouraging
people to get tested for hepatitis C so that
those who have the disease can be cured.
The Hepatitis Foundation of New Zealand,
the Health Promotion Agency, and the Ministry
of Health launched a brand new campaign,
called Get Hep C Tested to raise awareness of
hepatitis C and encourage more people to get
tested and treated.
“About 50,000 people in New Zealand
have the chronic liver infection – roughly
the number of people who live in Nelson
or Invercargill, or the number of people at
a sold out concert at Western Springs,” says
David Clark.
“The problem is almost half of them don’t
know it. Hep C is serious – it can rob you of
your energy, it can lead to liver cancer, and it
can kill you. You can get hep C many ways, like
sharing tattoo gear, but the most common
is from sharing needles. So if you have ever
injected drugs, even just once a long time ago,
you should get tested. The good news is that
while treatment used to be hit and miss as
well as unpleasant, we now have an effective
easy cure.
"At the beginning of this month, PHARMAC
began funding a new hep C treatment,
Maviret, which has the potential to cure more
than 99% of cases. The biggest issue now is
finding those people who don’t know they
have the disease so we can treat them, and
that’s why this campaign is so timely.
"The campaign shows that hep C is
widespread, people from all walks of life can
have it, and most importantly, it can be treated.
“So if you have ever injected you should
contact your GP and get tested,” says
David Clark

in the report the Taskforce is calling for significant change and
they want to give all New Zealanders an opportunity to share their
views at public meetings they are hosting around the country.
 So is our current education system still relevant? Does it work
for those that are parents, school board members or educators?
Does it meet the needs of our children today?
 The Independent Taskforce believes that we must place all our
children’s needs and potential at the centre of any change and
wants to hear from the public what they want from our schooling
system.
 Bali Haque, Chair of the Independent Taskforce, says “During
our review we found that education is highly valued in Aoteoroa
New Zealand but for every child to achieve well we need to change
our schooling system. Whether your involvement in a school is as
a student, a parent and/or PTA member, board member, teacher
aide or educator, we want to hear your feedback.
It is important that people are clear about exactly what we are
proposing and why so let’s have that conversation. And it’s even
more important that you have your say.”

annual concert showcases young talent

he Tamil New Zealand
School of Dance on Saturday,
February 9, hosted its annual
event at New Lynn Community
Centre showcasing the talents of the
young Bharatanatyam dancers.
The school’s annual concert
provides an opportunity to their
students to showcase their talents
to their families, friends and the
community. This year’s concert
illustrated the story of Krishna
who is mainly associated with the
attributes of love and compassion.
The performance presented the
enchanting story of Krishna’s birth,
the playful adventures of his youth,
his journey to abolish evil from the
100 headed snake - Kalinga, and his
triumphant endeavour to destroy evil
in the Mahabharata.
The event was graced by special
guests – Members of Parliament   to promote and gain extensive
Mellissa Lee, and Dr Paramjeet
Parmar  and classical dance lovers.
The show started with a Ganapathy
dance, which seeks the blessing of
Lord Ganesh who is respected as the
remover of obstacles and a patron of
the arts.
It is believed that dance, like music,
knows no geographical boundaries,
has no linguistic barriers and has
no racial divisions. Dance is a great
unifying and integrating force, and it
is clearly demonstrated in the show
that included participating dancers
from the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam,
Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi
and Bengali speaking communities.
As a strong advocate for a
multicultural Aotearoa, Tamil New
Zealand School of Dance intends
recognition of Indian culture through
the classical dance, Bharathanatyam,
and bring communities together
thereby unifying their minds and
souls through this form of art.

the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
The JEM espouses Jihad against
the US and is directly supported by
Al-Qaida, Gen. Miller wrote.
It says Rahman was influenced
by extremist Mullahs in Pakistan
and decided he would go to Jihad
in support of the Taliban. “Detainee
traveled to Zahir, Pakistan, and
attended a training camp run by
the JeM,” he wrote. Miller also
described JeM as a Tier 1 terrorist
group, especially those with state
support, that have demonstrated the
intention and the capability to attack
US persons or interests.

there are at least five trillion plastic pieces floating in our oceans.
Because deep-sea exploration is expensive and time-consuming, most
studies on plastic pollution up until now had been close to the surface,
showing a widespread level of plastic contamination in fish, turtles, whales
and sea birds. Now a British team of researchers say they have discovered
cases of plastic ingestion among tiny shrimp in six of the world’s deepest
ocean trenches. In the Mariana Trench east of the Philippines, the deepest
depression on Earth, 100 percent of the animals studied had plastic fibres
in their digestive tracts.
“Half of me was expecting to find something but that is huge,” said
Alan Jamieson, from Newcastle University’s School of Natural and
Environmental Sciences.

governing Conservative Party that she had “a problem with
immigration”, saying on Sunday that while it had been good for
Britain, people just wanted more control.
Last week, Anna Soubry, a Conservative lawmaker who quit May’s
party over what she called the government’s “disastrous handling of
Brexit”, accused May of having “a problem with immigration” that had
tied her hands in Brexit negotiations.
Asked if she had a problem with immigration, May said: “No. As I have
consistently said immigration has been good for this country.”
May, who was interior minister for six years, has made immigration
one of the focal points for her talks to leave the European Union, saying
Britain’s 2016 vote to leave the bloc was a sign that people no longer
wanted freedom of movement, on the EU’s main pillars.
Canada urges India, Pakistan to engage in dialogue

anada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has urged India
and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any further
military escalation over rising tensions between the two countries.
In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Freeland said that "Canada
is gravely concerned about rising tensions between India and Pakistan",
Xinhua news agency reported.
"Dialogue between India and Pakistan is needed to identify a durable
diplomatic solution and maintain peace and security in the region," the
minister said.
Early Wednesday, Pakistan said it took one Indian pilot into custody, a
day after Indian fighter jets conducted an air strike in Pakistan.
Hostilities between the two countries have increased since a suicide
attack in Kashmir killed over 40 Indian soldiers earlier this month. India's
air strikes this week represented the country's first attack inside Pakistan
since 1971. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan called for peace talks
between the two nations on Wednesday.
NASA's new mission to study space weather from ISS

ASA has selected a new mission that
will help scientists understand and,
ultimately, forecast the vast space weather
system around our planet.
The Atmospheric Waves Experiment
(AWE) mission will cost $42 million
and is planned to launch in August 2022,
attached to the exterior of the Earth-
orbiting International Space Station (ISS),
the US space agency said.
From its space station perch, AWE will focus on colourful bands of light
in Earth's atmosphere, called airglow, to determine what combination of
forces drive space weather in the upper atmosphere.
"This mission absolutely meets that standard with a creative and cost-
effective mission to solve mysteries about Earth's upper atmosphere," said
Paul Hertz, NASA's Director of Astrophysics.
Space weather is important because it can have profound impacts
- affecting technology and astronauts in space, disrupting radio
communications and, at its most severe, overwhelming power grids.
It was earlier thought that only the Sun's constant outflow of ultraviolet
light and particles, the solar wind, could affect the region. However,
researchers now have learned that solar variability is not enough to drive
the changes observed, and Earth's weather also must be having an effect.

lenn Maxwell cracked a superlative unbeaten century to help Australia register their
maiden T20 series victory over India with a win in the second and final Twenty20
international at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday.
Maxwell's scintillating 113 off 55 balls overshadowed Virat Kohli's 38-ball 72 which
helped India post a competitive 190/4 in 20 overs.
Chasing 191 for victory, Maxwell smashed as many as nine sixes and seven fours
on way to his third century in the shortest format as the visitors posted 194/3 to
win by seven wickets with two balls to spare. Australia had won the first T-20 in
Vizag on February 24 by 3 wickets and take the series 2-0 with five one-dayers
now coming up.
India rode on Kohli's brilliance and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 23-ball 40
with the pair adding a 100-run stand for the fourth wicket. But Maxwell
took the game away from India single-handedly.
Prior to the game, Australia had never beaten India in a T20
series, home or away. They had beaten India way back in 2008 at
Melbourne but that was a one-off game.
The visitors kept themselves in the chase despite a shaky start
which saw them being reduced to 22/2 in four overs. But, opener
D'Arcy Short (40) and Maxwell shared a 73-run stand off 43
balls to keep their chances alive before the former fell in the 12th
over. It was anyone's game as Australia needed 60 off the last 30
balls with seven wickets in hand. Maxwell then plundered
the bowling attack, smashing Yuzvendra Chahal for two
sixes, including a spectacular reverse hit, to tilt the
game in Australia's favour. For India, Vijay Shankar
returned best figures of 2/38. Earlier, Kohli led from the
front with an explosive unbeaten 38-ball 72 to propel
India to 190/4.
Besides Kohli, Lokesh Rahul and Dhoni also contributed
with a valuable 47 and 40 runs, respectively. Put in to bat, the hosts
started on a decent note as openers Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan added 61 runs
for the opening wicket in 7.1 overs before the former became a victim of Jason
Behrendorff.
Dhawan (14) and Rishabh Pant (1) then departed in quick succession as India
were reeling at 74/3. However, Dhoni (40 off 23) and Kohli (72 not out off 38)
then forged a crucial 100-run partnership, lifting India past the 150-run mark.
Pat Cummins finally helped the visitors get rid of a dangerous looking Dhoni
in the final over. However, it was too late as incoming batsman Dinesh Karthik
and Kohli displayed some fireworks to propel India to a fighting 190/4 in the
allotted 20 overs. For Australia, Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Cummins
and D' Arcy Short picked up a wicket each.
Smriti to lead India in T20Is vs England

xplosive opening batswoman Smriti Mandhana
will lead the Indian T20I side in the absence of
injured regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, as the
BCCI on Monday named the squad for the three-T20I
rubber against England, to be played in Guwahati.
Harmanpreet was ruled out of the series against
England after suffering an ankle injury, and a BCCI
statement stated that the star all-rounder will continue her
rehab at the National Cricket Academy.
The Indian women are currently on a high, having
taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI

ICC assures BCCI of security during World Cup
T
he International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday assured
BCCI that all security concerns at the upcoming ODI World Cup,
in the wake of Pulwama terror attack, will be addressed adequately.
According to sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India
(BCCI), at the ICC meeting here, Board's CEO Rahul Johri had raised
concerns about security at the World Cup, scheduled to be held in England
and Wales.
Johri reportedly expressed satisfaction with the ICC's security
arrangements during the World Cup which starts on May 30.
The BCCI is yet to take a decision on boycotting the World Cup first
round match against Pakistan on June 16 as there is a possibility that the
two arch-rivals may meet in the knockout stages as well.
There have been demands from several former players and ex-BCCI
officials that the Pakistan match should be boycotted following
nation wide outrage over the Pulwama terror attack which led to
the martyrdom of at least 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
soldiers.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and former star off-spinner
Harbhajan Singh are among those who had called for a boycott of the
match against Pakistan.
Dharun, Dutee clinch gold in Indian Grand Prix-2
H urdler Dharun Ayyasamy clocked 49.94 seconds to win his second
consecutive gold medal in the Indian Grand Prix series 2019 at the
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, here on Wednesday.
The 24-year old improved his timing from 50.07s clocked at IGP-1 in
Patiala on Saturday.
Santhosh Kumar took the second place with 50.77s and the bronze

1. SAMSUNG GALAXY FOLD
At long last, after endless leaks
and rumours, the folding Samsung
phone is official: the Samsung
Galaxy Fold has a 7.3-inch screen
that folds over itself when you're
ready to put it in your pocket.
Out in April 2019, the phone is
going to set you back a whopping
$1,980 (that's about £1,515), but

inside: a high-end processor, 12GB
of RAM, and 512GB of storage.
There's going to be a triple-lens
16MP+12MP+12MP rear camera,
and a 4,380mAh battery split up into
two sections (because of that fold).
On the software side, Samsung
says you can run three apps
alongside each other on the Fold,
should you want to. What's more,
any app that you're running on the
front of the device will seamlessly
switch to the middle once you open
it out.
2. HUAWEI MATE X
T he Huawei Mate X got unveiled
at MWC 2019, and it folds the
other way to Samsung's device – so
the screen wraps around the outside,
rather than being hidden away on
the inside, when it's snapped shut.
When opened out, you've got a full
screen 8-inch tablet; when snapped
shut, you've got screens front and
rear, as well as a grip holding the
camera technology. It's also thinner
than you might think, and as well
as packing some premium specs
(including the Kirin 980 processor)
it also offers 5G connectivity. Not a
bad package.
3. OPPO FOLDABLE PHONE
O
ppo doesn't officially have a
folding phone yet, but what
it does have is a folding phone
prototype that we caught a glimpse
of at MWC 2019 – and it's one that
looks a lot like the Huawei Mate X.
Alas we don't know too much else
about this phone, with the picture
you see above most of what we have
to go on. It looks like the hinge goes
the same way as the Huawei device,
and there's another bump grip you
can see on the side. As for all of the
specs, plus tech like 5G, we'll have
to wait and see – but with foldable
phones now going on sale to the
public, Oppo won't want to be too
far behind.
4. MOTOROLA RAZR 2019
F
rom the noises that Motorola
has been making, it's not going
to be far behind Samsung with a
foldable phone, and apparently
it's also going to carry the iconic
Motorola Razr branding. It's going
to be a flip phone then, but with a
full foldable screen inside when you
open it up.
These rumours have been around
for a while. It was back in February
2017 that Yang Yuanqing, the CEO
of Lenovo (which owns Motorola)
told TechRadar: "With the new
technology, particularly foldable
screens, I think you will see more and
more innovation on our smartphone
design. So hopefully what you just
described [the Motorola Razr brand]
will be developed or realised very
soon."
5. XIAOMI MIX FLEX
• Xiaomi MIX Flex best foldable
phone
O
ne of the more recent folding
phones to get a teaser reveal is
the Xiaomi MIX Flex, a prototype
device that was famously shown off
on camera by company president
and co-founder Lin Bin.
In the video reveal the Xiaomi
handset is initially shown in tablet
mode, but then both sides of the
device are folded inwards at two
points, leaving only the middle third
of the phone on show.
This design is markedly different
to that of the other folding phones
so far announced, potentially giving
Xiaomi an edge in the folding phone

In a message accompanying the
video Lin Bin wrote that:
"Xiaomi double folding mobile
phone is coming! This symmetrical
double-folded form perfectly
combines the experience of the
tablet and mobile phone, which
is both practical and beautiful.
Although it is still an engineering
machine, it is sent out for everyone
to see. If you like it, we will consider
making a mass production machine
in the future.
6. LG BENDI
A
t the moment it looks like LG's
foldable will feature just two
screens rather than the Samsung
Galaxy X's three: possibly with
one of the screens making use of
a transparent section, or perhaps
with a camera system embedded in
the back plate. Since that original
patent filing we've seen names like
Flex, Foldi and Duplex mentioned
in internal LG documents. As for the
final design, or the final price, we're
still in the dark – it's going to be
expensive, but LG has promised not
to rush the device to market before
it's ready, so a late 2019 launch
could be possible.
What we have in the meantime
is the LG V50 ThinQ with a Dual
Screen accessory – it clips on to
add a second screen that you can
use for something else, like gaming
controls, or watching Netflix.

Round the Bays, is back for 2019.
On Sunday the 3rd of March, Tāmaki Makaurau’s
picturesque Waitematā Harbour will be a rainbow of lycra
as more than 26,000 people tackle the 8.4km course.
Event-goers will be treated to entertainment every 600m
keeping runners amped with live music, comedians,
cheerleaders and more.
With the ambitious goal for Round the Bays to become
a zero-waste event, the March 2019 run has a solid
benchmark to beat - in 2018 a massive 67 per cent of the
waste generated was recycled or reused.
All ticket sales go towards the event’s three deserving
charity partners, Sea Cleaners Trust, Diabetes NZ
Auckland branch and Big Buddy Mentoring Trust, with
each receiving a share of $60,000 in cash donations for
