MATERIAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology is one of universities in Taiwan that
has vocational education system. The university contains from some faculties, one of them is
Faculty of Engineering. One of department in the faculty is Material Engineering Department.
This department was established in 1975, with name Department of Textile Engineering,
where at the time there is BS Program only. The department have experienced several
transformations. In 1979 name of department changed become Department of Fiber
Engineering, and in this year also opened MS Program, and opened PhD program in 1985. In
2000, the department changed the name become Department of Fiber and Polymer
Engineering and change again in 2003 become Department of Polymer Engineering. Begin
in 2005, the department accept international student for MS and PhD Programs. The last
transformation was happened in 2010, name of department change become Department of
Materials Science and Engineering [1].

Figure 1. Concept of LCD Operation

In general, there are three focus research fields, that is organic material, inorganic material
and material processing. In each fields, divide some field that more intents, in Organic
Material there are Bio-Materials, Polymer and Nano Composite Materials. Then in Inorganic
Material there are Green Energy Materials, Ceramic Materials and Electronic Materials. The
last, in Material Processing there are Semiconductor Materials and Automatic Process. There
are some laboratory to support the researches, some of them are Nano Optoelectronic, Bio
Engineering Polymer, Biomedical Material Laboratory and the others.
One of research topic from one of the laboratories is about Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), it is
flat panel display or other electronically modulated optical device that uses the light
modulating properties of liquid crystal. LCDs are used in a wide range of application
including televisions, computer monitors, hand phones and the others. There are various
display materials that used to LCDs, such as glass substrates, color filters, transparent and
electrodes [2]. From Figure 1 we can know how concept of LCDs operation, when voltage is
applied, the liquid crystal molecules of polarizer A do not twist the light, and so it passes
through as it is to polarizer B. Because of this, the light reaching polarizer B is blocked.
Generally, we know that most application of LCDs is in television. If we talk about television,
currently there are developments television namely Quantum Light Emitting Diode (QLED)
and Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED). Advantages of using OLED are peerless black-level
performance, beautiful contrast, enhanced shadow detail, superior viewing angles, and
unlocks the dark end of what HDR can do. Otherwise, advantages of using QLED are really
bright, more color volume, more lifelike HDR content, immune to scene burn and easer or
cheaper to manufacture.
