It is the fixity of the internal environment which is the condition of free and
independent life. All the vital mechanisms, however varied they may be, have
only one object, that of preserving constant the condition of life in the internal
environment.

Introduction
It is a difficult life for Terry the ameba, who lives in a thin layer of water
in the soil. This layer of water, Terry’s home, surrounds the particles of
minerals and decaying parts of plants that make up much of the soil. For
nutrition, Terry ingests pieces of food that include plant-decaying bacte-
ria. An ameba carries on all the normal functions of staying alive, includ-
ing digestion, respiration, and getting rid of wastes it produces. An ameba
even has the ability to divide into two cells to reproduce. (See Figure 10-1
on page 212.) But right now the ameba is having a difficult time. Terry is
only a single cell, and that is the problem.
For Terry, a long period without rain could be disastrous. The soil will
become dry, the thin layer of water will disappear, and Terry, without a
moist environment, will probably die. Or perhaps the temperature of the
soil will become hot or cold. When it is too hot or cold, Terry’s metabo-
lism will be disrupted. If the temperature changes too much, Terry might
even die.

And then there are the chemicals in the soil to deal with! Terry lives
in the soil under a person’s lawn. In order to improve the appearance of
his lawn, the homeowner spreads fertilizer. The fertilizer he uses is a mix-
ture of chemical nutrients for the grass. Suddenly, the chemicals change
the ameba’s watery home. Some chemicals may cause a change in the pH
of Terry’s layer of water. Other chemicals, being much more concentrated
outside of Terry’s cell membrane than inside, may cause the rapid osmo-
sis of water out of its single-celled body. These changes too may result in
Terry’s death. Changes in temperature, pH, and chemical concentration
are all problems that organisms must deal with. However, they are actu-
ally smaller pieces of one larger problem—maintaining a constant state.

■■ IS BIGGER BETTER?
The first forms of life on Earth 3.5 billion years ago were single cells. All
organisms alive today are descendants of these ancestral cells. The tiny
nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans, or C. elegans, lives in the soil.
When it is fully grown, it consists of 959 cells. C. elegans is the first organ-
ism made up of many cells that has had every one of its cells counted
and studied by scientists. It is a multicellular organism. Every organism in
the plant and animal kingdoms is multicellular. A human body is not
made up of 959 cells, but perhaps 40,000,000,000,000—40 trillion—cells.
It is unlikely that anyone will ever be able to count all of the cells in a
human. (See Figure 10-2.)
One of the most obvious changes that has occurred through the long
history of evolution on Earth is the development of larger, multicellular
organisms from microscopic, single-celled ones. Is there an advantage
to being multicellular? Is being “bigger” better? The problem that Terry
the ameba encountered provides one obvious and important answer.
Being microscopic and single-celled makes it difficult for an organism to
One of the most fascinating facts about our bodies is that each of our
many, many cells is surrounded by liquid. We have seen that life on Earth
began with single cells living in the oceans. Today, humans live as com-
plicated multicellular land organisms, and yet each of our cells exists in
a fluid environment surprisingly similar to that of the ancient ocean. How
could this happen?
It is necessary to look again at the smallest blood vessels in our bod-
ies, the capillaries. Capillaries are close to every cell in our body. How-
ever, as mentioned in the previous chapter, there is a small amount of
space between the capillaries and the body cells. This space is filled with
fluid. In a sense, each of our cells is still living in its own miniature ocean.
(See Figure 10-3.)
In 1843, a young Frenchman named Claude Bernard was trying to
decide if he should become a pharmacist or spend his life writing plays.
After he moved to Paris and decided to go to medical school, his future
was set. He became fascinated by how the body functions, and he went
on to become one of the most important physiologists of the nineteenth
century.
What fascinated Bernard most were the fluids that surrounded all of
the cells in an animal’s body. Bernard made many careful measurements

One of the obvious problems the ameba had was dealing with the changes
in soil temperature. A hot or a cold day could stress an ameba’s ability to
survive. On the other hand, look at where animals are found on Earth
today. Polar bears live on sheets of floating ice near the North Pole, where
the temperature can reach –4°C. Parrots fly through the steamy jungles of
South America, where temperatures may reach 48°C. (See Figure 10-4.)
Look at where a human can go on a cold winter’s day—perhaps from a
hot shower out into bitter-cold winter air, then into a warm classroom
and back to the frozen outside again. Two groups of animals, birds and

Everyone has experienced another way the body keeps warm. If nar-
rowing the blood vessels is not enough to limit heat loss on a really cold
day, the brain signals the muscles to start shaking. You start to shiver.

burns/s food for energy. This increased
message from the thermostat tells the furnace to shut down. When the
furnace stops producing heat, the temperature in the house stops rising;
soon the air begins to cool, and the thermostat continues the cycle of
telling the furnace to produce heat or to shut down. (See Figure 10-8.)
This is a type of self-regulation called negative feedback. In negative
feedback, a change occurs that produces another change, which in turn
reverses the initial change. Negative feedback is an important process in
maintaining homeostasis. We will see how it occurs in other examples
later.

Homeostasis in Space
In 2002, flight engineers Carl Walz and Dan Bursch set the record for the
longest United States space flight, with 196 days in space as members of
Expedition 4 on the International Space Station (ISS). Typically, ISS crews
have six or seven members who live on the station for three to six months.
The crews live in a world of weightlessness—the station has no up or down,
so there are no real ceilings or floors. While the total inside space of the
station is about equal to that of a jumbo jet, the individual spaces in which
the astronauts actually live and work are relatively small, each about the
size of a school bus’s interior. Crews sleep standing up or camping out
where they feel comfortable by attaching their sleep restraints to the wall
with Velcro. (See Figure 10-9.)
Biomedical researchers are interested in studying the effects of
weightlessness on humans. Being “weightless” is a brand-new challenge
never experienced before in the millions of years humans have lived on
Earth. And yet, time and again, space travel has demonstrated the
marvelous, and often subtle, abilities of the human body to adapt. The
body’s reactions to weightlessness are teaching us a great deal about its
normal responses to gravity. Astronauts report that when they grab the wall
of a spacecraft and move their bodies back and forth, they feel as if they are
staying in one place and that the spacecraft is moving. Being free of
gravity’s effects makes us aware of new things. Humans have evolved many
automatic reactions to deal with the constant pressure of living in a
downward-pulling world. Until we leave that world, we are usually not
aware of such reactions.
These reactions include the use of signals from our eyes, from the fluid-filled
tubes in our ears, from pressure receptors on the bottom of our feet, and
from the distribution of liquids in our blood vessels. A sophisticated control
system has evolved to keep gravity from pulling all the liquid in our body to
our legs. Within minutes of being in a weightless environment, the veins in
an astronaut’s neck begin to bulge. The astronaut’s face begins to fill out
and become puffy. In this situation, the fluids in an astronaut’s body are not
being pulled down by gravity. The fluids spread throughout the body.

EXAMPLE 2: WATER BALANCE
Maintaining water balance is a major concern for all living things. An organ-
ism with too much water in it will have problems, as will one with too little
water in it. Just as you would have to constantly shift your weight from one
side to the other in order to walk along a balance beam, living organisms
have to constantly make adjustments that maintain correct water balance.

How a plant uses its stomates is a form of regulation. Plants, just as ani-
mals, have evolved structural and regulatory adaptations that maintain

water balance. Let’s see how. (See Figure 10-10.)
If you examine a stomate under a microscope, you will see that the
opening of each stomate is surrounded by two guard cells. These guard
cells, like any cells, allow water to diffuse through their cell membrane by
osmosis. When water is abundant, it moves into the guard cells. The
increased quantity of water increases the pressure within the cells. What
is unique about guard cells is that they are somewhat curved in shape.
When they are filled with water, they become even more curved. The
space between them expands, the stomate opens, and excess water is
allowed to evaporate out of the air spaces inside the leaf into the air that
surrounds the plant.
How do guard cells behave when water becomes scarce? Again, watch-
ing the stomates through a microscope, we see the guard cells becoming
less curved in shape. This is happening because osmosis is moving water
out of the guard cells. Having less pressure in them, the cells become less
curved, and the stomate closes. And this is exactly what the plant needs
to happen. When the stomates close, water loss is reduced; once again
the plant is able to maintain its water balance.
Some plants have evolved unique adaptations for maintaining water
balance. Most plants tend to have their stomates wide open during the
day when photosynthesis is occurring, in order to take in CO2 and release
O2. Every evening the stomates close. However, plants living in the hot,
dry desert have a particular problem. They need to save water, and if their
stomates were open during the heat of the day, saving water would be
impossible. What adaptations do these plants show? Dry-climate plants
close their stomates during the day and open them at night instead. Cac-
tuses, pineapples, and stonecrops are plants that close their stomates dur-
ing the day. They have also evolved a special kind of chemistry that stores

the CO2 taken into the leaves at night for use in photosynthesis during
the day.
The abilities that plants have evolved, in order to maintain water bal-
ance, demonstrate once again that nothing is more important for staying
alive than the maintenance of homeostasis.
■■ MAINTAINING HOMEOSTASIS—
EXAMPLE 3: BREATHING RATES
How often do you breathe each minute? Do you constantly think about
and decide how fast to breathe? The answer, of course, is no. Unless you
stop and count, you may not even be aware that humans breathe about
12 times each minute. Even though we do not usually think about breath-
ing, however, our bodies are constantly making adjustments in our res-
piration rate. What and where are the sensors and the control center for
the regulation of our breathing rate?
When the level of carbon dioxide increases in the blood, a chemical
reaction causes the blood to become more acidic. The pH of the blood
becomes lower. Receptors in several places in the body detect this change
in blood chemistry. In the aorta (the large artery that leaves the left ven-
tricle of the heart) and in the carotid arteries in the neck, chemoreceptors
detect this chemical change in the acidity of the blood. In the brain, very
sensitive chemoreceptors also detect changes in the pH of the blood.
Once detected, this information is sent to the breathing control cen-
ter in a portion of the brain called the medulla. (See Figure 10-11a.) The
medulla controls activities that occur automatically without conscious

While Terry the ameba does its best to maintain homeostasis by using its
selectively permeable cell membrane, or by moving away from harmful
conditions, its ability to control its own internal environment is limited.
Large, multicellular animals, on the other hand, have evolved highly
organized, complex organ systems especially suited to maintaining a rel-
atively constant internal environment. These organ systems will be the
focus of other chapters. They include the excretory system, which regu-
lates the chemistry of the body’s fluids while removing harmful wastes;
the nervous system, which uses electrochemical impulses to regulate body
functions; and the endocrine system, which produces hormones, chem-
ical messengers essential in regulating the functions and behavior of the
body. Finally, the immune system stands guard, with a wonderful set of
defenses that protects the body from a huge variety of dangerous sub-
stances and microorganisms that could upset the internal balance on
which life itself depends.

Promoting Wellness Through
Community Resources
INTRODUCTION
Wellness is made up of the habits, decisions, and patterns of behavior
that are part of one’s lifestyle. More information about wellness can be
found in Chapter 14. Wellness includes emotional, physical, social, and
intellectual dimensions. The community also plays an important role in
individual wellness. In this investigation, you will work in a group to
explore the resources that promote wellness in your community. Your
group will then design and produce a pamphlet that will help other peo-
ple become aware of these resources. (No laboratory materials required.)
PROCEDURE
1. Form a group that will cooperate together on this project.
2. Identify the dimension of wellness that interests your group. For exam-
ple, you may be interested in social wellness. How does the commu-
nity provide opportunities for people to socialize? Or, for intellectual
wellness, what are the educational resources?
3. Develop a plan to conduct research about your community’s available
resources. The purpose of the research is to identify health resources
that relate to your group’s area of interest.
4. Strategies for conducting your community research may include
library research, telephone calls, personal interviews, and newspaper,
magazine, and Internet research.
5. Collect and edit the data from your research. Determine what infor-
mation you will use in your pamphlet.
6. A good size for a pamphlet is a three-fold document with six panels.
The six panels are printed on the front and back of an 81⁄2′′ × 11′′ sheet
of paper. Design the layout for the pamphlet.
7. Produce your pamphlet. Prepare a presentation for your class that
introduces your findings. Distribute your pamphlet at that time.
