PROJECT FACT SHEET

Interstate 405 (I-405) Sepulveda Pass

Dynamic Corridor Ramp Metering (DCRMS) and
Decision Support System (DSS) Deployment

PROJECT PURPOSE
Implement the DCRMS along the I-405 Sepulveda
Pass Corridor (I-405 from I-10 to SR-101) to
coordinate with the local arterials to provide the
highest benefit to commuters on I-405 itself as
well as to commuters on parallel arterials and
deploy the Corridor Decision Support System
(DSS) to operate freeway ramp metering system
in coordination with Los Angeles Department of
Transportation’s (LADOT) arterial traffic signal
system on Sepulveda Boulevard.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
DCRMS is one of the more effective Integrated
Corridor Management (ICM) concepts. DCRMS is a
system application which employs an adaptive
ramp metering algorithm that uses real time
congestion data to calculate ideal metering rates at
each metered on-ramp along a defined corridor. PROJECT LOCATION
DCRMS responds appropriately and effectively to • I-405 Sepulveda Pass from I-10 to SR101
non-recurring and recurring congestion scenarios • Sepulveda Boulevard from I-10 to SR101
and will spread wait times throughout corridor • Sunset Boulevard from Sepulveda Boulevard
equally. DCRMS will aim to improve the to Allenford Avenue
operational effectiveness of ramp metering
systems and traffic signal systems by distributing
demand to areas where capacity is available in

PROJECT ELEMENTS AND BENEFITS
SCHEDULE
Base DCRMS System and Bluetooth/WiFi Sensors:
(estimated) • Upgrade existing DCRMS system, configure and test the system to operate
along the I-405 Sepulveda Pass.
March • Install Bluetooth/WiFi sensors to measure travel times along Sepulveda

Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard.
Deploy Corridor Decision Support System (DSS):
Contract Start • Deploy DSS which will enable the Center-to-Center (C2C) information
exchange with LADOT (traffic flow data, ramp metering rate, incident
location and detail, planned event location and detail, coordinate traveler
September information including freeway Changeable Message Sign use for corridor
2019 management). Assist LADOT with Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS)
interface needs.
