STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

“If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,

If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!”
--Rudyard Kipling

Great people have penned poems, letters, and essays on what a dream means and how to face
it. Such extracts of beautiful poetry that I learnt my childhood have provided me the impetus
all the way through my education. At this stage, I wish to accomplish my long term goal of
being a research person in the field of computer science by pursuing the Masters of Science
degree in the field of Computer Sciences in your university. In order to compete in a global
environment, with abundance of opportunities in the field of computers, I selected
‘University of Houston’.
I wish to state certain instances of my schooling, secondary education and under graduation
which shaped me and inspired me to choose the field of “computer science”. Basic lessons
of life were taught to me by my mother. Being a teacher by profession, she has taught me that
determination and perseverance to win all the time and nurtured various ethics of life like
discipline, respect, and singularity of purpose right from my childhood.

Computer Sciences has always been the wildest dream of my life. As with every field, we
learn by experience(s). My preliminary fascination for computers arose when I learnt LOGO
and BASIC in the elementary grades. From that day, I have been with Computers in some
assignment, say schooling, undergraduate lab works, or my present day student internship of
developing software for organizations. On securing good grades in school, I chose
Mathematics and Sciences as the majors in Secondary Education. Through this phase of
education, I could improve myself over the logical and analytical ability.

My dream ambition to be a part of the computer science community enticed me to choose

computer science as the major in under graduation as my career option at Sreenidhi Institute
of Science and Technology(SNIST) ,affiliated to the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru
Technological University, Hyderabad, India. During the time when I joined for undergraduate
studies at SNIST, my goal was simple and certain: intellectual enrichment and applying that
knowledge to better those in need of a helping hand. My life experiences have led me to
appreciate the value of this goal.

During my undergraduate studies at the CS department , I learnt various courses like C

programming, Advanced Data Structures, Object oriented programming, Neural Networks,
Computer Organization, Computer Architecture, Computer Networks, Operating Systems,
Information Security and many more core subjects in the vast curriculum. During this
process, not only did I gain knowledge to enrich my mind, but the infantile interest in
computer science turned into a firm and stabilized passion.

“The desire of knowledge, like the thirst of riches, increases ever with the acquisition of it.”
In order to improve my knowledge, I started with my effectively coded C programs in my
earlier stage of undergraduate course and I finally taught myself to adapt to new languages as
per the trend. I succeeded in teaching myself a variety of languages, ranging from the most
used object oriented programming language of C++ to the trendsetter languages like J2EE.
This plethora of benefits aroused my passion for the subject which instigated me to work on
various software oriented projects.

I felt introduced to the arena of computer software after my project “University Admission
System” was accepted by IBM’s academic initiative program -The Great Mind Challenge’07.
The aim of the project was to develop an online application which manages student
admissions developed using JSP’s and Apache Tomcat Server. My second project,
“Corporate Recruitment System” for Cybertel Software Solutions pvt. ltd., led me to
higher waters in advanced Java. But, I felt a sense of delight, when I was offered an
internship in Serenity Infotech Limited, at Hyderabad, India to digitize their organizational
task of Leave Management in JAVA platform using MVC architecture. After experiencing
the work environment and the typical problems in all the projects I have worked with, I felt a
surge of improvement in the way of managing people and a project effectively.

I was also an active participant in the various extra curricular activities conducted wherein I
presented various review papers on topics ranging from core subject-oriented topics like
“Voice over Internet Protocol” to the latest technology like “Surface computing”. I also won
the first prize for all the presentations wherein the significant laurel was the one I won at
Birla Institute of Science and Technology, Pilani, India for the presentation on “Surface
Computing”. I was also elected as the Board Member of the organizing committee for the
Annual National Level Technical Symposium of the computer science department. I played
an important role in organizing the event efficiently and received accolades of many for the
organizational and interpersonal skills.

At this last stage of my under graduation, the world of 1’s and 0’s has always been
fascinating me and it continues to amaze me with its simplicity yet complexity. The college I
did my under graduation gave me the opportunity to gain first hand knowledge of different
fields of computer science and identify what I feel compelled to focus on in my career. I
found that computer science is the area that truly piqued my interest. Hence, with my
excellent academic background and programming experience along with the verdant
enthusiasm for research studies, a Master’s degree in my much adored field of computers is
the next logical step I could take.

I, therefore, chose University of Houston as it has got a wide choice of higher-level courses
in CS which will let me explore some more advanced topics of computer science. I feel that
graduate study at your university will foster my aspirations and dreams because of the
flexible integration of the vibrant learning environment and infrastructure. It also affords me
the chance to fully engage myself in the field of computer sciences and to enter the workplace
at a higher level to make a positive difference in the world.

Hence, I would be very delighted to see myself in your university in the Graduate program of
Computer Science Department, working with your highly qualified staff and with suitable
financial aid. I am very passionate to master the various cutting edge technologies that your
university is presenting me with. I, therefore, am hoping to combine hard work with my
make-your-dreams-come-true attitude, for the fulfillment of my future endeavors.
Looking forward to be a part of the International Community.
