Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will be engaged by using their technology to access the activity. Students will be
graded on participation for this activity as it is just a gauge of student understanding. Students will have
opportunities to work with peers as well as individually throughout the unit however for this activity students
will be asked to work individually. Students will remain engaged through competition with technology.

Representation: Students will be able to use any type of electronic device to complete this Kahoot! activity.
Students will be able to use their cell phones (if applicable) in class, which will, in turn, allow students a sense
of freedom and responsibility during the lesson.

Action and Expression: Students will only be using this Kahoot! for part of the activity. This activity will
serve as part of a study guide for the summative assessment to come. Students will be able to use what they
have learned from the lesson to answer questions on any device during the Kahoot! game.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will
introduce the SRT activity.

Students will have finished reading the book Revolution by Deborah Wiles along with the corresponding Civil
Rights poems, The House of Liberty by Joyce Brown, and Why Do They Hate Us? What Has the Negro Done?
By Florence Seymour. Students will have multiple group activities throughout reading to stay together in the
lesson and help with understanding and perspective.
Students will complete compare and contrast graphic organizers to identify the differences and similarities in
theme between the book and the poems. Students will be asked to activate prior knowledge about the Civil
Rights movement and tone to complete the assignments. Students will individually write paragraphs describing
how the tone and theme of the book is similar or different to the tone and theme of the poetry. Once students
are finished with their writing prompts, in the last 10 minutes of class they will be asked to take out their device
to participate in the Kahoot! activity going over what we just did as a class.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery
for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will be completing the activity of a Kahoot! game reviewing the book and poetry they have read about
the Civil Rights movement. This activity will take place as a formative assessment of student understanding
over the topic. Students will have compared and contrasted the differences in tone, perspective, and more
throughout the unit and this Kahoot! will extend their understanding as well as count as a refresher of
knowledge in preparing for the summative assessment. Students will have access to laptops in the classroom or
given permission to use their individual devices for this assessment. Students will be informed that this is a
participation grade, but they should try their best and take notes if possible for the coming up summative
assessment. This Kahoot! should last no longer than 7 minutes which will allow a few extra minutes for
students to ask for clarification or write notes about what we just went over.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No

☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity? Why or why not?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Working with the SRS Kahoot! allows for students to receive immediate feedback for their responses. Students
will also be able to go over their answers after the activity is completed.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, students will receive homework with the same questions and more to look over for a
unit test at the end of the week. Students will be given this study guide to facilitate correct understanding of all
topics and themes discussed throughout class. Students will also be given an option to create a Kahoot! for the
class to utilize for extra points on their summative assessment. The teacher will use these responses to gauge if
students are ready to continue the lesson moving toward the summative assessment or if students need more
time for comprehension and understanding.

How will the data be used?

The data from the Kahoot! will be treated as a formative assessment for the students. This will allow for review
over the book and poems read in class. This data will also be collected for a teacher understanding of student
understanding. Students will be able to have copies of the questions and answers from the Kahoot! activity to
allow for their entire understanding. Since the answers students give are anonymous to their peers (the teacher
can have access to individual answers) it allows students to answer honestly to how much they understood in
the topic. Students will feel less pressure and therefore be able to perform at their best abilities.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Having students use Kahoot! will be a first time trial for me. I will be combining many learning topics into a 5
minute game. I hope that students are able to use this activity as a refresher from the texts read in class and
utilize it as a study tool. Using this SRS allows me to give students the sense of “freedom” with cell phones or
other devices. It gives students a chance to be honest with what they have learned without worrying that they
will receive negative feedback.
Reflective Practice:

I believe that the SRS Kahoot! is a great way to have students remain engaged and interesting in a lesson.
Students are able to be competitive with their peers while also reviewing the lesson learned. Students engage
with activities that are relevant and fun to them and allowing them to play a “game” to study is a great way to
keep students interactive in the lesson. To further enhance this activity, I would create more Kahoot! games for
students to study as well as give them an option to create a Kahoot! for the class for bonus points on their
summative assessment.
