Waste & Our World Unit Review & Test

Grade/Subject: Science Grade 4 Lesson Duration: 120 minutes
Unit: Waste & Our World Date: March 2019
OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES
General Learning Outcomes:
 4.5 – Recognize that human activity can lead to the production of wastes, and
identify alternatives for the responsible use and disposal of materials.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify plant and animal wastes, and describe how they are recycled in nature.
For example, plant leaves serve as a source of food for soil insects, worms and
other creatures. The wastes of these animals may then be further broken down
by molds, fungi and bacteria.
2. Identify and classify wastes that result from human activity.
3. Describe alternative methods of disposal, and identify possible advantages and
disadvantages of each.
4. Distinguish between wastes that are readily biodegradable and those that are
not.
5. Compare different kinds of packaging, and infer the relative advantages and
disadvantages of that packaging. In evaluating different forms of packaging,
students should demonstrate the ability to consider a consumer perspective as
well as an environmental perspective.
6. Identify methods of waste disposal currently used within the local community.
7. Identify kinds of wastes that may be toxic to people and to the environment.
8. Identify alternative materials and processes that may decrease the amount of
waste produced; e.g., reducing wastage of food, using both sides of a sheet of
paper.
9. Identify ways in which materials can be reused or recycled, including examples
of things that the student has done.
10. Develop a flow chart for a consumer product that indicates the source
materials, final product, its use and method of disposal.
11. Identify actions that individuals and groups can take to minimize the production
of wastes, to recycle or reuse wastes and to ensure the safe handling and
disposal of wastes.
12. Develop and implement a plan to reduce waste, and monitor what happens
over a period of time.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Review the various outcomes from the unit.
2. Discuss various question and their answers.
3. Write unit test online through google classroom.

 Students will complete their unit test. This is a summative assessment. It will
be worth 30 marks. It will be written though google classroom. There will be
multiple choice questions, true & false, and short answer.
 Students should be well prepared for this test because we will review similar
questions during the Kahoot activity.

or share answers. We will discuss them after.
 If you have a question, raise your hand.
 When I am talking, eyes on me and listening ears on.
 Stay on task when using Chromebooks.
 Participation in group discussions.

Advance Organizer/Agenda:
 Make Kahoot in advance. Test it if it works.
 Book Chromebooks.
 Make unit test on google forms.
 Test if unit test works correctly.

Learning Activity #1 & 2: Kahoot & Class Discussion (L.O #1 & 2).
 To review what we have done in our unit, students will play a review game of
Kahoot. There will be 12 questions.
 Students will use chrome books to answer the questions off the smartboard at
Kahoot.it.
 After each question, students will turn to their elbow partner to discuss why the
answer is what it is, or an example to further describe it. They will reference the
notes from their duo tang.
 During this activity, there will be various discussions going on about the
answer.
Assessments/Differentiation:
 Students will have 30 seconds to answer each question.
 Allow students to ask questions.
 Group discussion, teacher lead.
 Students can discuss questions with their elbow partner in between questions.
They can look at the notes in their duo tang.
