Faculty will assign students one DQ and lead the discussion. Please post your
original post by Day 2, and respond by Day 6 to at least 2 of your cohorts
opposite question. Continue to respond to the cohorts and faculty in your original
thread until the last day of the week. Follow the rubric criteria ( see below)
DQ 1 For this question, conduct an Internet search and produce at least one
research article ( study design must be discussed) addressing one or more of the
concepts noted.
How does APN practice demonstrate cost-effectiveness, reduction in errors and
misuse or overuse of services?
DQ2
1. When would you consult with the nurse informaticists?
2. What role does the nurse informaticists play in primary care?
3. What qualifications and credentialing are held by nurse informaticists?
Nurse informaticist (NI) are advance practice nurses who integrate computer science into nursing
practice. NI uses computer science and informational science to manage data and communicate
data into the nursing practice (Rojas & Seckman, 2014). NI implement technology such as the
electronic health medical record and maintain its software in hospitals. They are also there to
support employees after hours if there should run in to any complications with software issues, so
There are several reasons why I would consult a nurse informaticist, one of them is the fact that
through them I can access the current information in primary care practices. As I visualize myself
as a Nurse Practitioner soon, I realize that they can be the support system I will need to get a
desirable outcome in my patients. As stated by ANIA the nurse informaticist would provide
support by integrating nursing, computer and information science to manage and communicate
data, information, and knowledge to deliver high quality and cost-effective health care.
Furthermore, in the modern world technology plays a significant role and the incorporation of this
one in the health care system seems vital. It is through this process where the nurse informaticist
becomes essential and will be consulted to assist in the ever-changing development of technology.
With most places changing from paper charting to the electronic medical record, a nurse
informaticist would be utilized to help coordinate, facilitate, and integrate these changes since it
can be a bit overwhelming to learn such a complex electronic system (HIMSS, 2012).
The nurse informaticist plays multiples roles in primary care. One of their functions is to develop
communication and information through technology, education, and research to create evidence-
based practices to support safe patient-centered care (AMIA, 2018). In a primary care setting, the
nurse informaticist would work with other disciplines to ensure that up-to-date evidence-based
care is provided, especially preventative care. This is important because if the patient is receiving
the appropriate preventative care in primary care settings, then there would be less illness and
better management of chronic conditions, resulting in lower hospital admissions and cost.
Furthermore, the shift to electronic medical records in health care initiated an exciting change in
how nurses and physicians work, and it has become a significant tool in health care delivery. The
president of the American Nursing Informatics Association declared that nurses are one of the
largest user groups of electronic health records and they are held accountable for most of the
documentation needed for the clinical portrayal of the patient (Herman, 2014). A nurse
informaticist’s role in primary care would be assisting electronic health record vendors to improve
the use of technology in health care and transform it in ways to improve patient care and outcomes.
They will have a significant part in ensuring that nursing peers and physicians are trained in
informatics and communication within their technology.

The Nurse Informaticist are awarded: Registered Nurse-Board Certified (RN-BC). They are
credential by The National Commission for Certifying Agencies and the Accreditation Board for
informaticist, the applicant nurse must meet the following criteria of eligibility.
1. Hold a current, active RN license in a state or territory of the United hold the professional,
4. Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in informatics nursing within the last three
years.
a. Have practiced a minimum of 2,000 hours in informatics nursing within the previous
three years;
or
b. Have practiced a minimum of 1,000 hours in informatics nursing in the last three years
