Renewable power

sources and their

application
What are renewable
power sources
 Renewable energies are those generated from
sources that do not have a finite end or those that
can be recycled typically from natural sources.
 Most renewable energy sources are emit less
carbon.
 Renewable energy offers a constant and
sustained supply
 In many cases, energy produced from renewable
sources is cheaper than that produced by non-
renewable means
Need of Renewable
Energy

 Fossil Fuels Are Limited

 To reduce High Carbon
Emissions
 Due Climate Change
 To maintain Economy
stable
Renewable Energy Sources
suitable for Sri lanka

 Hydro Power
 Solar Power
 Wind Power
 Biofuel & Biomass
Hydro Electricity
 Hydropower is the oldest and largest renewable
power sources and contribute 50% of our
nation’s electricity.
 Hydropower plants convert the energy of flowing
water into electricity.
 This is primarily done by damming rivers to create
large reservoirs and then releasing water through
turbines to produce electricity.
 Hydroelectricity is one of the lowest cost forms of
energy as it requires no fuel. Not only is that It
one of the cleanest forms of energy.
 Apart from that there are more than 10 large station
in all over the Sri Lanka
Solar Power
 Most widely available
source of energy in Sri
lanka.
 Not as limited in location
sitting as other renewable
sources such as Wind &
Hydro.
 Sri lanka already have
two solar farms in
Hambanthota and
Thirappane.

Sri Lanka solar power

 Current is generated through Photovoltaic effect -
flow of free electrons in Silicon Panel due to solar
irradiance
Wind Power
 One of the main currently
used renewable power
source in sri lanka

 Wind power is produced by

the energy of the wind
turning aerodynamic
blades mounted to a hub.

 The hub is connected to a

shaft that turns a generator

 Smaller wind towers are

suitable for residential and
agricultural use.
 Sri lanka wind climate is primarily
determined by the South-West
monsoons and North-East
monsoons,
 Therefore flat landscape in the
South-Eastern and North-
Western are more suitable for
windmills.
 Wind Farms require Smaller
Lands when compared to Solar,
Hydro
 Cheaper than Solar

Biomass
 Biomass as a fuel consists of organic matter such
as industrial waste, agricultural waste, wood, and
bark
 Any one can produce biomass energy because
raw materials are available everywhere
 Biomass can use as a substitute coal as a fuel in
ordinary power plants.
 Biomass burns cleaner than coal
 less sulfur dioxide will be emitted into the
atmosphere
 Biomass can be converted to other usable forms of
energy like methane gas or transportation fuels like
ethanol and biodiesel.
 . Biomass can be burned directly in specially
designed power plants
