Scambaiting is the art of wasting the time of scammers. There are as many types of baiting as there
Introduction
are scams. This guide concerns itself with scams that take place over the telephone and which utilise
toll free numbers. Typically, these are tech support scams, IRS/CRA scams, cruise scams, grant scams,
gift card scams and rogue online pharmacies.

This guide only applies to systems running Windows as I do not own a Mac. It assumes that you have
installed all of the software needed to make the audio setup that meets your requirements.

The first thing you should do is ask whether you need to have a different audio setup at all. The setups
in this guide are for those intending to do communal scambaiting using a VOIP client such as Dis-
cord. If your intention is to scambait by yourself then you may not need to make any changes what-
soever.

If your intention is to participate in communal scambaiting then you will need what is known as a
dialler: a combination of software used to facilitate communal scambaiting.

This guide only covers audio setup. It assumes that all required software is installed and ready to use.

The First Step

Update your audio drivers. Even if you are a sole scambaiter who does not intend to engage in com-
munal scambaiting, go an update them anyway. Do it now.

Discord is a VOIP application that is popular in gaming communities. It is used by
Software
scambaiters as a communal hub and as a way of conferencing together scammers
and scambaiters.

VMware is software that allows you to create virtual machines on a physical ma-
chine. It is used to create a dialler and is the VM software used throughout this
guide.

FireRTC is an online browser based phone. It is used by the majority of scambaiters

as it allows the ringing of toll free numbers and is very easy to set up and use.

X-Lite is a VOIP softphone that uses the Session Interface Protocol (SIP). In order to
use it you will need to have a SIP account.

VoiceMeeter Banana is a virtual audio mixing console that allows you to route au-
dio to different devices or applications.

Virtual Audio Cables are used to route audio. There are different versions available. I rec-
ommend the Muzychenko version if you can afford it as it offers the most flexibility but the
version made by VB Audio will suffice. If using the VB Audio cables you’ll need the one that
requires a donation. The free version only has one cable and you need at least two.

OBS is free, open source recording and streaming software. It is popular among scambait-
ers as it allows for easy recording and/or streaming of video and audio.

Intro
This type of dialler is the most common dialler used in communal scambaiting. It is the sort of dialler
The Dedicated Dialler
most people are familiar with and most often what is meant by “can you make me a dialler?”. It is
very easy to make but as it requires a VM it is not one I recommend to most people as VMs can be
quite a heavy drain on resources. The only benefit to this dialler is that it allows you to dial in one
voice channel while talking in another.

In this dialler we are using two virtual audio cables to route the audio. One is set as the default re-
cording device, the other as the playback device. In order to use the dialler it needs to be in the
same voice channel as your main account.

Requirements
• Virtual Machine.
• Two virtual audio cables
• Discord, with a dedicated dialler account
• Chrome or Firefox.

Initial Setup
Create the VM and install Windows. Download and install Discord, virtual audio cables and FireFox or
Chrome. Create the Discord dialler & FireRTC accounts.

6
Windows Setup
• Open up the Sound Properties window
The Dedicated Dialler
• In the recording tab set Cable A as the default recording device.
• In the playback tab set Cable B as the default output device.

Discord Setup
• In Discord, navigate to User Settings and se-
lect Voice.
• Click on the Input Device drop down menu
and select Cable B.
• Click on the Output Device drop down menu
and select Cable A.

Browser Setup
• Open your browser settings and set the microphone to Cable A.
• Make a test call using FireRTC. If you have configured things correctly you should be able to hear
yourself in the playback of the test call.

Intro
This type of dialler is less frequently seen in the scambaiting community, although it is the one that I
The Integrated Dialler
recommend most people use. Using the dedicated dialler requires you to have a VM. This can prove
problematic for people who also want to run a baiting VM, unless they have powerful systems.

Using an integrated dialler means that system resources that a dedicated dialler would use can in-
stead be put towards the baiting VM.

Requirements
• Voice Meeter Banana
• Discord
• Chrome or Firefox
• X-Lite (optional)

Initial Setup
Download and install Voice Meeter Banana, Discord & Chrome. Create the FireRTC account and
the Discord account, if you do not already have them.

8
Windows Setup
• Open up the Sound Properties window
The Integrated Dialler
• In the recording tab set VoiceMeeter Input as the default
playback device.
• In the playback tab set VoiceMeeter Output as the default
recording device.

Discord Setup
• In Discord, navigate to your voice settings.
• Set VoiceMeeter Output (VB-Audio Voice-
Meeter VAIO) as your input device.
• Set VoiceMeeter Aux Input (VB-Audio Voice-
Meeter AUX VAIO). as your output device.

9
Browser Setup
• Open your browser settings and select Voice-
The Integrated Dialler
Meeter Aux Output as your microphone.

X-Lite Setup (optional)

This section only applies if you are using the X-Lite softphone.
• In X-Lite navigate to Preferences > Devices.
• Set your speakers to Voice Meeter Input (VB-Audio
VoiceMeeter VAIO).
• Set your microphone to VoiceMeeter Aux Output
(VB-Audio VoiceMeeter AUX VAIO).
• Click OK.

10
VoiceMeeter Banana
Setup
• In VoiceMeeter Banana set your speakers as your primary hardware device (A1), above the cas-

sette player, choosing the WDM codec.
• Select your hardware microphone as your first physical input device, again using the WDM codec.
• If you want to be able to hear your microphone through your speakers or headphones then route
the mic’s audio to your speakers by clicking on A1 so that it is highlighted. Route the audio to B1 and
B2 by clicking on those buttons so they are also highlighted.
• In the VoiceMeeter VAIO channel, here named “Desktop”, route the audio to A1 and B1.
• In the VoiceMeeter Aux channel, here named “VOIP”, route the audio to A1, B1 and B2

In this dialler we are using VoiceMeeter to route

the audio to two channels B1 and B2. Discord re-
ceives all the audio sent to B1 and the scammer
receives all the audio being sent to B2.

To mute audio to Discord uncheck B1 on the

microphone input channel. To mute the audio to
the scammer, uncheck B2.

Intro
This dialler setup is the one I currently use. It is very similar to the Integrated Dialler
Shiva’s Integrated Dialler
outlined above except it uses virtual audio cables in conjunction with VoiceMeeter
Banana to turn software, such as Discord, into virtual hardware.

Requirements
• Voice Meeter Banana
• Muzychenko Virtual Audio Cables
• Discord
• Chrome or Firefox
• X-Lite
• OBS

Initial Setup
Download and install Voice Meeter Banana, Discord, Virtual Audio Cables & Chrome. Create the
FireRTC account and the Discord account, if you do not already have them. The Windows & Browser
setup procedures are the same as for the Integrated Dialler.

12
Windows Setup
• Open up the Sound Properties window
Shiva’s Integrated Dialler
• In the recording tab set VoiceMeeter Input as the default
playback device.
• In the playback tab set VoiceMeeter Output as the default
recording device.
• Rename Line 1 to Discord Cable (optional)
• Rename Line 2 to X-Lite Cable (optional)
• Rename Line 3 to OBS Cable (optional)

Virtual Audio Cables Setup

• Run the VAC Control Panel as Adminstrator
and in the Driver parameters set the number of
cables to three.

13
Discord Setup
• In Discord, navigate to your voice
Shiva’s Integrated Dialler
settings.
• Set VoiceMeeter Output as your in-
put device.
• Set Line 1 (Virtual Audio Cable) as
your output device.

Browser Setup
• Open your browser settings and select Voice-
Meeter Aux Output (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter AUX
VAIO) as your microphone.

14
Shiva’s Integrated Dialler X-Lite Setup (optional)
• In X-Lite navigate to Preferences > Devices.
• Set your speakers to Line 2 (Virtual Audio Cable).
• Set your microphone to VoiceMeeter Aux Output
(VB-Audio VoiceMeeter AUX VAIO).
• Click OK.

OBS Setup
• In OBS, open the settings and navigate to the Audio tab.
• Disable each audio input.
• Set the Mic/Auxiliary Audio Device to Line 3 (Virtual Audio Ca-
ble).
• Click OK to exit the setting and open the mixer settings. Set the
device to Line 3 (Virtual Audio Cable)

15
VoiceMeeter Banana Setup
• Set your A1 Hardware Out to be your speak-
Shiva’s Integrated Dialler
ers. Set A2 to Line 3 (Virtual Audio Cable) or to
OBS Cable if you renamed it.
• Set your microphone as your first hardware Headphones
input.
• Set Discord as your second hardware input OBS
by choosing Line 1 (Virtual Audio Cable) or
Discord Cable.
Discord
• Set X-Lite as your third hardware input by
choosing Line 2 (Virtual Audio Cable) or X-Lite
Cable. Scammer
• In all cases use the same audio codec, pref-
erably WDM.

This setup is very flexible and offers you a lot of audio routing options. Checking A1 will send the au-
dio to your headphones. Checking A2 will send the audio to OBS. Checking B1 will send the audio to
Discord and checking B2 will send the audio to the scammer.

In the image above we can see that the audio from all of the channels is being sent to my head-
phones and OBS. In addition the audio from my mic is being sent to Discord and the scammer. The
audio from Discord is being sent to the scammer, and the audio from X-Lite and FireRTC is being sent
to Discord.

This type of audio setup is very versatile, especially if you are acting as a dialler on the stream, or
engaged in communal scambaiting. You can mute audio to the scammer by unchecking B2 on the
microphone and Discord Inputs. This allows you to communicate with the stream, or other people in
the voice channel, without the scammer being able to hear. If you need to mute the audio from the
scammer, to prevent someone else from using the remote access code then you can do so by un-
checking B1 on the X-Lite and Desktop inputs.
