Dedication
As is the case with many young Christians, my knowledge
of scriptural truth rapidly outgrew my ability to graciously
practice what I preached.
During those frustrating days I was introduced to a
marvelous band of saints. They came from a variety of churches
to the Ocean-View Nursing Home to conduct Monday night
services for the residents.
They would arrive in an old powder-blue station wagon
which they affectionately called "The Old Gospel Ship". I can
still picture them climbing out with big Bibles and bigger smiles.
Their only desire was to be a blessing to the aged ones in that
rest home.
These dear Christians cared not that I had no formal training.
They made my obvious shortcomings matters of prayer, not
criticism. They recognized a gift which God had graciously
given me and allowed me the opportunity to preach on occasion
and then on a weekly basis in their services.
As the months went by I came to realize these beloved
believers had very little "doctrinal" knowledge. As more months
passed I realized they had something far more important, the
grace to walk in all the light God had given them.

I dedicate this work to that happy gospel band, some of


which have gone on to glory:

Preface
he third chapter of the book of Genesis is probably the
most important single chapter in all the Bible.
In the first two chapters of the word of God we are
introduced, ever so briefly, to the props which decorate this great
stage known as planet Earth. We also meet the players which
shall appear in the subsequent unfolding of history.
It is in the third chapter that we have the beginning of every
plot which is to be developed throughout the remainder of the
Bible, and as such, the remainder of human history.
This chapter marks the beginning of the relationship
between man and God and between man and Satan. Every aspect
of these relationships may be traced back to this chapter.
The subjects of life and death, sin and salvation, human
nature, spiritual warfare and end-time prophecy all begin here.
In fact, more than a mere beginning, many of the great Biblical
themes are seen here in summary form.
With the help of the Holy Spirit, we will set forth in this
booklet a series of twenty lessons built upon the doctrines
contained in the third chapter of Genesis. In so doing we will
provide the Bible student with a working knowledge of the
fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith.
Please be willing to lay aside all preconceived ideas and all
religious prejudice as these lessons are presented. Please
abandon all assumptions in favor of plainly stated Biblical truth.
Please make no judgment regarding any of the statements made
in this booklet until carefully checking each Bible reference
given. All statements made herein will be supported by the
scriptures and the references will be given so that the student
may check them thoughtfully.
It is our prayer that God will use these studies to help
individuals, Sunday School classes, churches and schools to
understand what they believe. Many hold to the fundamentals of
the faith but cannot show anyone, themselves included, a Biblical

basis for their beliefs. These lessons will make the Christian
ready to give an answer to everyone who asks a reason for the
hope within them.
For those using these studies in a forum other than private
study we suggest a reading of the entire chapter before each
lesson. These study guides assume a working knowledge of the
text of Genesis 3.

Lesson 01
RULES FOR BIBLE STUDY
efore we begin our study of Genesis Chapter Three let us
set forth basic rules by which all Bible study should be
conducted.

I. THE BIBLE IS CORRECT AS IT STANDS

God has authored His word, and preserved it in its original


purity and perfection (Psalms 33:4; 12:6-7; 19:7; Proverbs
30:5; 1 Peter 1:23). We are not to corrupt or question the
Bible, but to study, believe and obey it. Remember: if one
must alter the Bible to make a point that point is no longer
Bible doctrine.

II. THE BIBLE IS TO BE RIGHTLY DIVIDED

God has written one Bible, containing the truth man needs
in every age. We must carefully examine its contents to
determine what portion of the word is binding upon us
today and what portion of the word is for our example only
(2 Timothy 2:15). Each passage must be read with the
following questions in mind:

• To whom is this addressed?


• In what age do the context of the remarks place the
passage?
• Does this rightly apply to the day in which we live?

III. COMPARISON OF SPIRITUAL THINGS WITH

A. Biblical terms and meanings are to be defined by their


use throughout the Bible text, not by extra-Biblical
sources (1 Corinthians 2:12).
B. Things which match and things which differ must be
noted with the utmost care (2 Peter 1:20).

IV. REPEATING HISTORY IS THE KEY TO PROPHETIC


MATERIAL

The student must carefully note the cycles and patterns


which the Holy Spirit has woven through the Bible text
(Ecclesiastes 3:15). History truly does repeat itself.

V. HUMAN KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION ARE OF


ONLY SECONDARY IMPORTANCE

The Bible is the work of the Holy Spirit, and the Author,
within the believer, will teach any willing soul the truth
(Genesis 40:8; Psalm 25:14; 1 Corinthians 2:12-16).

VI. USE OF CROSS REFERENCES IS ESSENTIAL

God seldom places all the truth regarding a matter in a


single place (Isaiah 28:10; 2 Peter 1:20). The student must
search every passage referring to any topic to be certain he
has all the counsel of God on a matter.

VII. TRUST GOD BEFORE MAN

God has given each of us certain mental faculties. He has


also gifted and enabled certain men to teach His church.
But all men, one's self included, must be judged in light of
scripture (Romans 3:4). When anyone differs with the
Bible, the Bible is to be trusted.

GOD: AS SEEN IN GENESIS
CHAPTER THREE
careful reading of this chapter will reveal much about
the varied aspects of the true and living God. There are
eight significant attributes of God set forth in the twenty-
four verses of our chapter.

I. THE CREATOR

(See also Genesis 1:1; John 1:1; Colossians 1:16). The


Bible nowhere speaks of the origin of God, for all
originates in God. He is the Alpha. He is the beginning.
The Bible nowhere argues the existence of God. The
existence of anything and everything is the proof of God.

II. THE AUTHOR OF HIS WORD

(See also 1 Thessalonians 2:13; Exodus 19). Just as God


spoke the universe into being (Hebrews 11:3; Genesis 1) so
He has spoken UNTO His creation. All aspects of His
creation live or die in relation to His words.

III. THE SENDER OF HIS VOICE TO SEEK FALLEN MAN

(See also John 1:14; 1 John 5:7; Revelation 19:11). The


Lord Jesus Christ, God the Son, is the WORD made flesh.
He it is who came to seek and save that which was lost in
Eden's garden. He it is who came to Bethlehem to seek
and save.

IV. THE ONE WHO CALLS FALLEN MAN

(See also John 12:32). Man does not find God for God is
not lost. It is man, lost in the darkness of sin, not knowing
where to turn, who hears the Saviour's call. Much
emphasis is placed today upon calling on the name of the
Lord. If you ever call on God, it will be in response to
God's calling you.

V. THE PRONOUNCER OF CURSES

(See also Deuteronomy 32:39; Isaiah 45:7). The modernist


and liberal have joined the infidel in lying to man. God
hates sin and rebellion, and He has and will pronounce His
holy curses against all unrighteousness.

VI. THE JUDGE

God is seen in this chapter as dealing with sin in


uncompromising judgment. This attribute of God does not
vary throughout the Bible record. Universal salvation, no
literal burning hell, God is the Father of all, and doctrines
of similar intent are all hopeless delusions. Every man will
face God. Every man will give account of himself to God.
Every man that is without God's provision of salvation will
receive the wrathful judgment of God in full.

VII. THE PROVIDER OF A COVERING FOR SIN'S


NAKEDNESS

(See also Genesis 22:8; 1 John 3:16; Proverbs 10:12).


Knowing that man could never rid himself of the ruin of
sin, and desiring that man be reconciled to Himself, God
makes a way of salvation.

VIII. THE PROTECTOR OF HIS HOLINESS

The cherubims and the flaming sword show that God will
not allow sin to defile that which pertains to eternity. The
tree of life is isolated until sin is put away (See Revelation
21-22).

Each of these points will be touched upon in more detail in


the lessons which follow.

THE IDENTITY OF THE SERPENT
n this lesson we shall examine the word of God and
determine exactly who it was that spoke with the woman
in the garden.

I. HIS MANY NAMES


A. Proper names (Revelation 20:1-3; 12:9). Here we
learn that the old serpent is known to God as the Devil
and Satan.
B. The reptilian connection (Isaiah 27:1). Here the
crooked, piercing serpent is also known as Leviathan.

II. HIS PHYSICAL APPEARANCE


A. A cherub in Eden (Ezekiel 28:11-17; 10:14; 1:10).
Combining these scriptures we form the following
picture of our adversary: He is beautiful, wise,
adorned with precious stones, and has a voice like
music. As a cherub, he has wings, his body is like that
of a man but is brightly glowing as though on fire, and
his foot is split like that of a calf. This is not science
fiction but the word of God. All myths about fire
breathing dragons are weak imitations of the Devil
himself.
B. The Missing Class (Ezekiel 10; 28:11-17). Reading
these chapters carefully we find these cherubim make
up four classes:

• Man: human
• Ox: tame beast
• Lion: wild beast
• Eagle: fowls

This leaves the classes of fish and reptiles unaccounted


for. The Biblical material on Leviathan indicates he
was the cherubic representative of those creatures
connected with water.

III. HIS DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

At this point we must ignore all commentators and


marginal notes and believe what we have learned from the
Bible. Job 41 is the God inspired description of the
character of Leviathan. Read this chapter carefully. The
scripture has told us plainly that this sea-monster is the one
who met with the woman in Eden.

IV. WHAT WE KNOW THAT THE WOMAN DID NOT


A. Satan is a liar (John 8:44).
B. He is a murderer (Hebrews 2:14).
C. He seeks to destroy men (1 Peter 5:8).
D. He is transformed into an angel of light (2 Corinthians
11:14).

Note: Satan was not permitted to assail them as superior, but


had to come in the form of one of the lower creatures which was
already under the dominion of man. His influence had to be of a
moral character, rather than by overpowering will. He had to use
subtlety for until the fall he was under man's dominion.

THE NATURE OF SIN
in is introduced to man by the subtlety of Satan. The
source of sin is questioning what God said, altering
what God said, and then denying what God said
(Genesis 3:1-5). All sin is transgression of the word of God.
The very last warning God gives to man concerns the sin which
took place in the garden (Revelation 22:18-19).

I. WHAT IS SIN?
A. All unrighteousness (1 John 5:17; Psalms 33:4).
B. Transgression of the law (1 John 3:4; Psalms 19:7).
C. Knowing and not doing (James 4:17).
D. Doing, but from a motive other than faith (Romans
14:23; 10:17).
E. Pride and wicked works (Proverbs 21:4).
F. Foolish thoughts (Proverbs 24:9).

II. HOW SIN OPERATES


A. It is deceitful (Hebrews 3:13). Satan never discusses
the wages of sin, its bitter fruit, or its damning effects
on the heart and life. Sin will be pleasant to look
upon, desired to make one wise, etc. The adversary
will make sin look as good today as it did to Eve long
ago.
B. It is easily besetting (Hebrews 12:1). For those with a
fallen nature sin comes naturally. We are told to
stand, fight, flee, watch, resist, etc. because sin takes
hold upon us so rapidly.
C. It is powerful (Proverbs 5:22; Romans 6:14). Once
one yields to any sin it has the power to captivate and
completely control the life of the sinner.

D. It is hurtful (Proverbs 8:36; Romans 6:23). Sin will


never advantage the sinner. Every act of sin will cost
the sinner something.

Note: The condemnation of the devil (1 Timothy 3:6) was his


desire for a higher place than that given him by his Creator
(Isaiah 14:13). The appeal to the woman in the garden was to
follow this path. Humility before God will lead one to accept
one's God given place. All attempts of the creature to "advance"
apart from the Creator are acts of sin.

THE FIRST DEATH
ot only is it very simplistic to teach that the first death is
physical death and the second death is spiritual death,
but it is also very wrong. Death begins in our chapter as
the result of sin.

I. FACTS ABOUT DEATH


A. It is the payment for sin (Romans 6:23).
B. Satan has power to execute where given permission
(Hebrews 2:14; Job 1-2; John 8:44).
C. No man has power over death (Ecclesiastes 8:8).
D. Each man dies for his own sins (Deuteronomy 24:16; 2
Chronicles 25:4).

II. WHAT ACTUALLY DIES


A. Each death is both physical and spiritual.
1. The body dies because of sin (Romans 7:24;
8:10).
2. The spirit is given up (Acts 5:5-10; John 19:30).

B. Man is a tri-unity (1 Thessalonians 5:23; Genesis 2:7).


This is what it means to be made in the image of God.
God is not short or tall, blonde or brunette, black or
yellow but is a tri-partite being (1 John 5:7). Such is
true of man. Compare:

• spirit breath of life Holy Ghost


• soul living soul The Father
• body dust of the ground Word made flesh

C. At the first death body and spirit return to their origins


(Ecclesiastes 3:18-21).
D. This leaves an eternal soul to face God in judgment
(Matthew 16:26).

Note: Death did not strike Adam first, though he was the first
sinner. Death did not strike Cain first, though he was the first to
manifest inherited sin. But the first to die was righteous Abel.
The first soul that met with death overcame death. The first soul
that parted from earth died in faith (Hebrews 11). Thus, death
does not necessarily argue displeasure. He whom God loved
died first and the murderer was punished while living.

THE SECOND DEATH
ne may die the first death more than once (Lazarus,
Eutychus, Dorcas, etc.). The second death is eternal.
The second death is not the end of one's existence or an
annihilation, any more than is the first death. Both the first and
second death are the passing from a temporal mode of living. At
the first death one passes from temporal life on earth to a place of
eternal life with Jesus Christ or temporal torment in hell. At the
second death one passes from temporal life in the torment of hell
to a place of eternal torment in the lake of fire. Man is an eternal
creature. He will live forever in some place and in some
condition.

I. THE FACT OF THE SECOND DEATH


A. There is a second death (Revelation 2:11; 21:8).
B. It is to be feared (Matthew 10:28).
C. It is the requiring of the soul (Luke 12:20). At the first
death man gives up his body and spirit but keeps his
own soul. (See Lesson 05).

II. WHAT TRANSPIRES AT THE SECOND DEATH


A. The soul is a man's own and is eternal (Matthew
16:26).
B. After the first death a soul retains full consciousness
and full mental and physical faculties (Luke 16:19-31;
Revelation 6:9-10).
C. The second death is the escape of a soul from hell, to
stand at the White Throne judgment, and then to be
cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the permanent abode
of the lost, where one will never again behold any
aspect of true life (Revelation 20:11-15; 1 John 5:11-

13) which is the person of Jesus Christ. Thus, the first


death is to lose one's body and spirit temporarily. The
second death is to have one's soul cut off from Jesus
Christ, the only true life, eternally.

III. THE PROPER CONCERN


A. The salvation of the soul (Proverbs 11:30; James 1:21;
Hebrews 10:39). Modern man is continually seeking
ways to preserve the body or enhance the life of the
spirit. Both are satanic deceptions. It is the soul
which is more essential.
B. Salvation of the soul is possible only through Jesus
Christ (Micah 6:7; Acts 2:27; Revelation 20:4).

HOW SALVATION IS FALSELY SOUGHT
ithin every man is a longing and desire to rid himself of
that which inwardly condemns him. Sadly, self, Satan
and religion continually lead men down the broad road
which leads to destruction.

I. THE BLIND SEARCH


A. All men are religious but none seek God (Romans
1:18; 3:10-12).
B. The methods of men. It is interesting to notice that in
Genesis 3:7-13 the first man made every attempt to
escape responsibility for sin that any of his
descendants would ever make. They may take on
slightly different forms, but these are the only four
ways a lost man has of dealing with his guilty
conscience.
1. He seeks to cover his own sin (Job 31:33). God
was not consulted, as his purpose was not to come
to God but merely to hide what he had done in
order to escape wrath in case God showed up
(John 3:16-21). What a graphic picture of the
world's religions!
2. He blames someone else; the woman (vs. 12).
3. He blames God; thou gavest to be with me (vs.
12).
4. He blames the Devil; the serpent beguiled me (vs.
13).

II. THE NATURE OF FALSE RELIGION


A. It is built upon Satan's philosophy.
1. Self exaltation (Isaiah 14:13).

2. The works of one's own hands (Matthew 7:22).


3. Improper comparison with others (Luke 18:11-
14). Unregenerate man, finding no way to hide
his sin or blame it on someone else, resorts to the
next step: religion. His religion will consist of
finding something he is or something he has done
which makes him a little bit better than someone
else. He will then try and find rest in the hope
that if bad people go to hell, he will not be so
condemned, because he knows someone who is
worse than he is.

B. Why man cannot save himself.


1. Sins (Isaiah 59:2).
2. Absence of submission to God (Romans 10:3).
3. Rejection by God (Job 9:30-33).

Note: Worse than the condition into which man had fallen was
his accusing God of being the cause of it. Man not only accuses
God of being the author of his fall, but also blames Him for his
non-recovery. To claim one cannot believe unless God gives
them power to believe; and, further, that unless they are the
subjects of God's eternal decree they cannot be saved is to make
God guilty of and responsible for man's lost condition. This is
Adam!

HOW SALVATION IS PROVIDED
I. THE PRESENT TRINITY
A. The Father, The Word and The Holy Ghost are one (1
John 5:7).
B. The Father declares that beside Him there is no
saviour (Isaiah 43:11). He comes to dwell with man in
the person of the Son prior to Calvary (Matthew 1:18)
and in the person of the Spirit after Calvary (John
14:16-17).

II. THE PURPOSE OF THE PRESENT TRINITY


A. Salvation is possible because God laid down His life
for man (1 John 3:16). He made the payment for
man's transgressions (Isaiah 53:1 ff.) by bearing them
in His own body (1 Peter 2:24). (See Lesson 18).
B. Therefore, the God who condemned man and
pronounced death as the penalty for sin died that death
and paid that penalty Himself (Acts 20:28; Genesis
22:8) and by so doing removed all condemnation
(Romans 8:1).
C. As the scriptures make clear that Christ died for all
men (1 John 2:2; 1 Timothy 2:6) but that not all shall
be saved we must look for a condition. In our
previous lesson we saw clearly that works or merits
could not be the condition.
D. The condition is believing (Romans 10:9) the gospel
(1 Corinthians 15:1-2) enough to receive Jesus Christ
as Lord and Saviour (John 1:12-14).

III. THE POSSESSION OF THE PRESENT TRINITY

I. THE SHEDDING OF BLOOD


A. The first blood shed on this earth was shed by God to
cover fallen man (Genesis 3:21).
B. The first human blood shed was that of a shepherd
(Genesis 4:5-8).
C. In the fulness of time, a God-Man-Shepherd would
shed His blood (Colossians 1:14).

II. WHAT THE BELIEVER HAS THROUGH THIS BLOOD


A. Peace with God (Colossians 1:20).
B. Justification before God (Romans 5:9).
C. Cleansing by God (1 John 1:7).
D. Redemption through God (Ephesians 1:7).
E. Purging of inward corruption (Hebrews 9:14).
F. Union with God's own (Ephesians 2:13).
G. Forgiveness by God (Matthew 26:28).
H. Purchase of God (Acts 20:28).
I. Nearness to God (Ephesians 2:13-18).

III. BLOOD WASHED OR BLOODY?


A. Judas Iscariot went to the field of blood (Acts 1:19).
B. Pilate could not get the blood off of his hands

Note: God first came to create, then to save what He had


created. To create, God had only to speak. To redeem He had to
suffer. God made man by His hand, gave man life by His breath,

THE NATURE OF JUDGMENT
ne of the outstanding facts which runs through the course
of the Holy Bible is that of accountability. There will be
judgment upon sin, deeds, individuals, nations and the
whole creation.

I. THE NATURE OF GOD'S JUDGMENT


A. It is a direct confrontation with God (Psalm 75:7; 50:6;
7:8).
B. It involves specific questions and answers (Genesis
3:9-13; 4:9; Jonah 4).

II. FOR EXAMPLE: THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST


A. All believers shall appear (Romans 14:10-12).
B. The word of God is the basis (John 12:47-48).
C. The examination will be complete.
1. One must account for thoughts (Ecclesiastes
12:14).
2. One must account for words (Matthew 12:36).
3. One must account for deeds (2 Corinthians 5:10).

III. THE SEVERAL SPECIFIC JUDGMENTS


A. That of Sin. This took place at Calvary when the Lord
Jesus Christ suffered the wrath of God which was
poured out upon and against SIN.
B. That of believer's sins. This is known as the Judgment
Seat of Christ. Only those who received the payment
for sin will be present. At this time the SINS of the
believer will be burned and righteous deeds will be
rewarded (1 Corinthians 3:11-15). Should a believer
practice daily self-judgment these sins may be stricken

from the record and purged away prior to the judgment


seat (1 John 1:9; 1 Corinthians 11:31-32). The
believer's sin and sins were paid for at the cross. The
removal of sin admits one to the body of Christ, thus
to heaven at the rapture. The removal of sins admits
one to the rewards and blessings of the future
kingdom.
C. That of nations. This will take place on earth,
following the battle of Armageddon. Nations will be
admitted corporately into the Millennial Kingdom if
they assisted the nation of Israel during the time of
Jacob's trouble (Matthew 25:31-46; Joel 3:1-2).
D. The white throne. This will take place following the
Kingdom age and Satan's final rebellion. At this
judgment will appear all those who were not a part of
the body of Christ which appeared at the Judgment
Seat. Here Old Testament, Tribulation and Kingdom
Age Saints will be judged as well as all the
unbelieving dead since Adam (Revelation 20:11-15;
Hebrews 9:27).

Note: There will be those at diverse judgments who will seek to


argue their own case before God (Matthew 7:22). What a grand
peace is owned by those who may be silent in that day because
they have an advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1).

Note: Some would teach us that the only thing for which men
will be condemned is the rejection of the gospel. This is a grave
error. Men will be judged for their sins, their wicked ways, their
idle words and according to their works. It is a fatally false
doctrine to teach that people will only be judged for rejecting the
gospel. Such teaching denies the sinner's responsibility, and
furnishes a plea for the indulgence of his sinful desires. It is
quite true that the rejection of the gospel leaves people on the
ground of judgment, but the judgment will be, in every case,
according to man's works.

WHY ADAM DIDN'T DIE THAT DAY
ne of the most oft repeated attacks made against the
Bible by its critics is God's failure to kill Adam in the
day that he ate the fruit. Those who have sought to
defend the Bible by claiming that God didn't mean what He said
have only compounded the problem. To say that Adam died
spiritually but not physically is not only unscriptural (see
Lessons 05 and 06) but is untrue. The Biblical answer is far
more blessed.

I. THE EARTH
A. The earth was made by God in the beginning (Genesis
1:1).
B. It is defined in scripture as the dry land portion of the
planet (Genesis 1:10; Proverbs 8:23-26).
C. It belongs to God (Deuteronomy 10:14).

II. THE WORLD


A. The world is set upon the earth (1 Samuel 2:8).
B. Thus, it is distinct from the earth (Jeremiah 51:15).
C. It belongs to Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4).
1. This includes its kingdoms (Matthew 4:8).
2. And its things (1 John 2:15).

Throughout the Bible the earth is set for the physical realm
under the control of God. The world is set for the spiritual
realm on the earth under the control of Satan. The world
began when Adam chose the lordship of Satan over the
lordship of God. This concept must be understood to
properly study hundreds of Bible passages (Matthew
28:20; 24:3; etc.).

III. THE INTERVENTION


A. At the moment of the fall, which was the beginning of
the world, Jesus offers Himself to the Father that He
might die in the place of Adam (Revelation 13:8).
Thus, to say Adam died spiritually is to miss the grand
truth. Adam did not die that day because Jesus Christ
pledged to take his place in death.
B. This is grand news for all those who die in Adam (see
Lesson 17) as Jesus eventually came to die for the sins
of the whole world (1 John 2:2).

Note: To make man out of the dust of the ground was power.
The Lord's power and Godhead is seen in His creation. To seek
lost man is pure grace. Creation declares God's existence.
Calvary declares God's heart.

THE NATURE OF THE MAN
hat no psychiatrist is able to comprehend or explain can
be learned by a careful study of the word of God. The
psalmist once asked God, "What is man?" As a result of
the fall into sin, the answer is not pleasant.

I. THE FULLY NEGATIVE SIDE


A. He is a child of wrath (Ephesians 2:3). This does not
speak of a man's destiny but of his origin. Man begins
his life with a bent toward sinning and must be
restrained and corrected if any good thing is to come
from his days on earth.
B. He receives not the things of God (1 Corinthians 2:14).
There is no true communion between God and His
fallen creatures. This is not because God does not
attempt to speak to them through their conscience, His
creation and His word. The lack of communion is
attributed to man's inability to receive the things of
God. For example, there are television signals
traveling through the air around our home. We have
no television set. The signal is present but we have no
means whereby to receive it.
C. He sins by choice. He is not deceived (1 Timothy
2:14). Man does not need to be taught to sin. Such is
his nature. Yet, man cannot claim innocence or
ignorance when he does sin. He knew what he was
doing in the garden and he knows what he has been
doing ever since. He is guilty before God because it is
his God-given nature to know right from wrong. (See
note below).

II. THE SOMEWHAT POSITIVE SIDE


A. Man is given some revelation.
1. God reveals to man the basics of His law (Romans
2).
2. God reveals to man His existence as Deity
(Romans 1:19-21; John 1:5).
3. God gives every man enough faith to believe the
gospel when he hears it (Romans 12:3).

B. Man is heterosexual (Romans 1:26).


C. Man has certain natural affections (Romans 1:31).
D. Man's conscience makes it possible for him to be
taught certain moral principles (1 Corinthians 11:14).

Note: Many are confused as to the exact nature of the


knowledge of good and evil, which came from partaking of the
forbidden fruit. This is not the knowledge of right and wrong,
for that was part of man's God given nature. Evil is not sin but
the result and consequence of sin (Isaiah 45:7; Amos 3:6). Let us
explain in this way: righteousness is the sowing, good is the
reaping; sin is the sowing, evil is the reaping.

THE JUDGMENT UPON THE MAN
here are certain consequences of the fall which effect the
male descendants of Adam to this day.

I. THE REASON FOR THE JUDGMENT


A. Placing human relations before God (Genesis 3:17).
B. Directly disobeying the word of God (1 Timothy
2:14).

II. THE ASPECTS OF THE JUDGMENT


A. The ground cursed.
1. God strikes at the source of physical life (Genesis
1:29; 1 Corinthians 3:6; James 5:7). From
Adam’s time forward the corruption of the ground
began to take its toll upon man. Not only do the
wages of sin decay the body of flesh, taken from
the dust, but the toll is exacted more rapidly with
each passing generation. All the advancements of
science and medicine have not altered this fact.
2. For his sake (Genesis 3:17). The curse becomes a
blessing in that it prevents the idleness which
would allow the natural man to bring his society
to complete moral ruin (Ezekiel 16:49).

B. Sorrow all his days (Job 14:1; 5:7).


C. Thorns and thistles. Even as a man seeks to obey God
and earn an honest living there are countless forms of
adversity resisting his every effort.
1. Such is a fact of life (Ecclesiastes 7:14).
2. Such is part of Satan's work (1 Peter 5:8).

3. Such requires strength to overcome (Proverbs


24:10).

D. Sweat upon the face. From all of this we learn that


man's original occupation, i.e. working the ground, has
become a dreadful chore rather than a God blessed
pleasure. It is the God given nature of a man to desire
hard work. This was corrupted by the fall. Now,
man's rebellion and the difficulty of the task conspire
to make work a curse. To shirk one's responsibility to
work is to sin against the commandments of God and
against the working men on whose labors such a one
lives. To create cities, factories, and the like to avoid
the tilling of the ground has taken man to the brink of
the apocalypse. Dear brother, work! We are sinners.
Thus, work is labor, unpleasant and seldom rewarding.
Yet every drop of sweat, every aching muscle, every
thorn or briar is God's reminder of the cost of sin.

Note: Man still tends to blame his wife for the results of his fall
(Colossians 3:19).

Note: Weeds only grow in ground that has been cultivated by


man.

hose who are seeking to destroy society, and thus the
human race, by teaching the current generation that there
are no differences between men and women are
incredibly naive, completely deceived, or both. The truths of this
lesson and the next are in no way an insult to the female but
sound Biblical instruction to help her overcome the world, the
flesh and the Devil.

I. THE NATURE OF THE WOMAN AS SEEN IN THE


GARDEN
A. Curiosity. Because she was not present with Adam at
the beginning of the race, the woman naturally feels
she has missed out on something and wants to know
all. The grocery store tabloids, ongoing soap opera
plots and tendency to gossip, are all innate
manifestations of this nature (Micah 7:5).
B. Feeling of being kept under. The woman has a natural
resentment toward her God given place of submission.
Her bitterness is seen in her words of Genesis 3:3. By
adding neither shall ye touch it to what God
commanded she manifests her resentment at being told
what to do.
C. Trust in emotions. The woman acted on sight
(Genesis 3:6) and was beguiled (2 Corinthians 11:3)
and deceived (2 Timothy 3:6; 1 Peter 3:7). It must be
understood that the nature of the female is to act upon
emotion rather than reason and careful thinking. All
wicked men know this and prey upon it. All women
should know this and guard against it.

II. THE NATURE OF THE WOMAN AS LEARNED IN


THE GARDEN
A. Subtle and beguiling in practical matters. Rebeka
(Genesis 27), Jochebed (Exodus 2), Rahab (Joshua 2),
Herod's brother's wife (Matthew 14) give examples.
The fallen nature of the woman provokes her to plot
and scheme to gain what she cannot have by legitimate
means.
B. Subtle and beguiling as manifest in prostitution.
Proverbs 5-7 details the extent to which the serpent
took possession of the female character in the garden
of Eden affair.
C. Subtle and beguiling in religious matters. Thus, those
deceived by Satan into joining a church which is
thoroughly Satanic are said to be duped by the Mother
of Harlots (Revelation 17), seduced by Jezebel
(Revelation 2:20) and do not even know why their
churches bear some sort of name relating to "our
Lady".

Note: Mystery Babylon is what every natural woman would be


should God leave her to herself.

THE JUDGMENT UPON THE WOMAN
I. MULTIPLIED SORROW (GENESIS 3:16)

Do not misread this verse and attempt to make the pain and
suffering of childbirth the result of this judgment. That is a
separate item. Here is the explanation, unknown to modern
psychiatry, as to why the woman's tears, fears, grief and
heartaches are more frequent and severe than are the
man’s.

II. MULTIPLIED CONCEPTION (GENESIS 3:16)

There are two possibilities here. It could be multiple


childbirths were never intended by God and that the
bearing of more than one child at a time is a part of this
judgment. Or, it is possible that before the fall a woman
would have had only seasons of fruitfulness, as is true of
the other creatures. We cannot be dogmatic either way.

III. SORROW IN CHILDBIRTH (GENESIS 3:16)

Here is the pain, difficulty and frequent complication of


childbirth. It is impossible to believe that God made a
woman to help the man be fruitful and multiply and then
made the fulfillment of His purpose so painful a matter.
Such suffering resulted from the fall.

IV. DESIRE TOWARD THY HUSBAND (GENESIS 3:16)

All independence was forfeited in the garden. In this day


of women's rights and women's liberation we are

witnessing misunderstanding at its peak. The fairer sex is


not in bondage to man but in bondage to self will. Ever
since Eve partook of the fruit her sex has been free only in
a place their fallen nature abhors.

V. HE SHALL RULE OVER THEE (GENESIS 3:16)

For many these are the most hated words in all the Bible.
None can deny the facts of points I-III, yet the same Divine
Author inspired points IV and V.

All of these aspects of the curse upon the woman are for
her benefit. In each case God has given her some
unavoidable sorrow so that she might continually be
reminded of the wages of sin. Each tear, each difficult
pregnancy, each unhappy moment of trying to serve a far-
from-perfect husband is the Holy Spirit's reminder that sin
carries terrible consequences.

A. The headship of the man.


1. This is God's order for family and society (1
Corinthians 11:3).
2. This order pictures the relationship between
Christ and His church (Ephesians 5:22-30).

B. The testimony of submission.


1. Uncut hair (1 Corinthians 11:1-15). The cutting
of the hair, according to the word of God, is an
outward testimony of a woman's independent
spirit. When she removes the symbol of her
submission she is to be ashamed (1 Corinthians
11:6). In the garden she was ashamed (Genesis
3:7). In these last days she is not (Zephaniah 3:5).
2. Silence when the church is assembled.
a. This is to prevent the woman from being
deceived (1 Timothy 2:9-15). Her fall in the

garden was a result of her being out from


under the authority of Adam.
b. This is to prevent the woman from deceiving
the man (1 Corinthians 14:34-35). Adam’s
natural affection for the woman led him to
disobey God. For this cause a woman is
forbidden any place of spiritual leadership. A
careful reading of the Old Testament will
provide frequent warnings against and
examples of marriages to women of pagan
beliefs. These often cost a man or his nation
their right relationship to God. Mary Baker
Eddy (Christian Science), Mary Ellen White
(Seventh Day Adventists), Katherine
Kulhman (Charismaticism) are excellent
examples in our generation.

Note: The cutting of the hair costs a woman her power in


relation to the angels (1 Corinthians 11:10). This strange
statement is understood when considering 1 Corinthians 6:3. At
the White Throne Judgment the church will pronounce final
judgment upon the angels that rebelled. A woman, who was
observed by the fallen angels to live in rebellion during her
lifetime, will be powerless to speak against them in that awful
day.

Note: God has stacked the deck against the modern liberators:
huMAN race, woMAN, perSON, feMALE, and those who

SATAN'S RELATION TO THE WORD
I. SATAN'S PERSONAL USE OF THE SCRIPTURES
A. The devil knows the scriptures and quotes them
(Matthew 4:1-11). He can only be detected by the fact
that he will use the scriptures to exalt himself and not
the Lord.
B. The devil questions and corrects the scriptures
(Genesis 3:1-6). He can only be detected by the fact
that he will not use the scriptures as they are actually
written.

II. THE USE OF SCRIPTURE BY SATAN'S SERVANTS


A. His workers seek to prevent its effectiveness (Matthew
13:19). The word of God is not bound and Satan is
powerless to keep it from going forth. However, the
devils and unclean spirits, who are always present as
the seed is being sown, work upon the ears, hearts, and
minds of the hearers to prevent the word from taking
root.
B. He has ministers who preach the word (2 Corinthians
11:14-15; 11:4; Galatians 1:6-8). The fact that a man
looks nice, speaks kindly, lives a good life and
preaches from the Bible, cannot guarantee he is not
satanic. What does he SAY?
C. He has men who study the Bible to destroy the body of
Christ (Matthew 2:1-8). Herod had a Bible study to
learn where to find Jesus that he might kill Him. Men
like Ingersol searched the scriptures to find means of
destroying men's faith in the word. Who can deny the
cults like Jehovah's Witnesses study the Bible?

III. RECOGNIZING HIS ACTIVITY


A. His wisdom is corrupted (Ezekiel 28:17). Any and all
pride in one teaching the Bible, publicly or privately,
should warn one of great danger.
B. He corrupted the woman (2 Corinthians 11:3).
C. He did this by corrupting the word of God (2
Corinthians 2:17). In the garden, Satan used his
corrupted wisdom to first, cast doubt upon the word;
second, alter the actual words of God; third, deny the
truth of the word outright. When a man or woman
takes the first of these three steps they have already
joined league with the Devil.
D. The word of God is incorruptible (1 Peter 1:23).
Anyone who says that time and translators have
conspired against the word of God to introduce
corruption into its text is satanic.

Note: Satan told the woman that knowledge would make her as
the gods. This knowledge came at the expense of the words of
God. A college graduate refers to his school as his Alma (virgin)
Mater (mother), believing his education (knowledge) makes him
a god.

Lesson 17
THE TWO ADAMS
he Bible speaks of the Lord Jesus Christ as being the last
Adam. He came to this earth to restore man and creation
to their original relationships with the Father. A careful
reading of Romans 5:12-21 and 1 Corinthians 15:21-22, 45-47
will reveal a wonderful comparison of the two Adams.

I. THE FIRST:
By his offense many are dead.

THE LAST:
By His grace the free gift abounds to many.

It would be a denial of much scripture truth to state that the


"many" dead in the first Adam did not include all who had
reached accountability (Romans 7:9). It would be equally
dishonest to limit the "many" toward whom the gift of
grace abounds to a group not inclusive of all the "many"
dead by Adam's offense.

II. THE FIRST:


Brought judgment to condemnation.

THE LAST:
Brought justification.

III. THE FIRST:


Under his ruined dominion death reigns.

Under His everlasting dominion the saints reign in newness
of life.

IV. THE FIRST:


By his disobedience his offspring were made sinners.

VI. THE FIRST:


Was a living soul who came out of the earth.

THE LAST:
Was a quickening spirit who is the Lord from heaven.

The Old Testament is the book of the generations of Adam


(Genesis 5:1). A careful reading of the genealogy in
Genesis 5 will show that all the members of this race die.
Adam generates death. The Old Testament thus ends with
a curse (Malachi 4:6).

The New Testament is the book of the generations of Jesus


Christ (Matthew 1:1). A careful reading of the genealogy
in Matthew 1 will show that no members of this race die.
The last Adam generates life. Thus, the New Testament
ends with the curse removed (Revelation 21-22).

Jesus after His resurrection supposed Him to be the gardener

Lesson 18
THE TWO SEEDS
nd I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and
between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head,
and thou shalt bruise his heel (Genesis 3:15).

That this verse promises the seed of a woman is taught by many


as the first prophecy of the advent of Jesus Christ. This may be
accurate but is by no means complete. As the human
reproductive seed comes from the man we must recognize this as
a prophecy of:

1. The virgin birth.


2. As this birth is to oppose the corresponding seed of
Satan this must be the birth of God, not a god.
3. The birth of One who would overcome the Serpent's
seed and thus reverse the curses of Genesis 3.

Mary conceived by the Holy Ghost (Matthew 1:18). What she


conceived was that holy thing (Luke 1:35). Thus, the reference
is to the body in the womb and not the Person in the body
(Hebrews 10:5). The seed which indwelt the body was and IS
CHRIST (Galatians 3:16).

This is essential. It not only establishes the true nature of the


virgin birth, but forever voids the teaching that Mary was the
mother of God. She was the mother of the body in which God
took up residence.

Though man continues to teach that this prophecy refers to Christ


bruising Satan's head at the cross, there is no reference here to
the serpent, but to HIS SEED. Not only do the gods have power

to reproduce (Genesis 6:1-6) but the leaders of earth's national


governments in the last days will be their offspring (Daniel 2:36-
45). Their head will be the antichrist, who is no mere mortal, but
the SON of Perdition (2 Thessalonians 2:3).

Those who seek wisdom, rather than God, are waiting for the
return of the gods from outer space (Acts 14:11-13). God will
give them just what they want (Luke 17:26).

The prophecy of Genesis 3:15 will be fulfilled when the Son of


God, born of a woman, will destroy the Son of Perdition, born of
a woman. At this time the curses of Genesis 3 will be reversed.

Note: Hidden in Jeremiah is a judgment pronounced upon


Jeconiah that no sons of his seed would sit on the throne forever
(Jeremiah 22:30). Yet, we read of this Jeconiah in the genealogy
of Jesus (Matthew 1:12). Thus, the only way Jesus could be of
Jeconiah's line AND sit on the throne was to be virgin born.

THE NATURE OF TEMPTATION
ur chapter teaches that the man and the woman did not
purpose to sin against their Maker. Satan sought to
tempt them to use something God had made in a way
which God had forbidden. This is the basis of all temptation.

I. NOTHING GOD MADE IS SINFUL


A. God saw all that He made was good (Genesis 1:31).
B. Nothing is unclean of itself (Romans 14:14).
C. To the pure all things are pure (Titus 1:15).

II. WHO DOES THE TEMPTING?


A. God is not the tempter (James 1:13).
B. Satan is the tempter (1 Thessalonians 3:5).

III. WHAT IS TEMPTATION?


A. Satan appeals to human lust (James 1:14).
B. These lusts are common to all (1 Corinthians 10:13).
1. Lust of the flesh (1 John 2:16).
2. Lust of the eyes (1 John 2:16).
3. Pride of life (1 John 2:16).

C. The Two Great Examples.


1. The first Adam in the garden (Genesis 3).
a. Good for food.
b. Pleasant to the eyes.
c. Desired to make one wise.
2. The last Adam in the wilderness (Luke 4).
a. Rocks into bread.
b. Showed kingdoms of the world.
c. Angelic escort.

D. Conquest In Temptation.
1. Trust God (2 Peter 2:9).
2. Take the way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13-14).
3. Depend upon the word of God (Luke 4; Psalm
119:11).
4. Watch and Pray (Matthew 26:41). Three times
Peter yielded to the temptation to deny the Lord
AFTER he had three times yielded to the
temptation to sleep when Jesus had instructed him
to pray.

Note: It is not a sin to be tempted. Jesus was tempted. It is a sin


to yield to temptation. At a busy intersection one does not yield
by entering the wrong highway. One yields by slowing down to
consider the options. Sin begins when you stop beneath the tree
of knowledge to converse with the tempter rather than fleeing at
his first suggestion.

Note: Temptation is that which puts to the test. Trials are sent
by God to do this. A test is never sent to injure. A weight is
attached to a rope, not to break, but to prove it. Pressure is
applied to a boiler, not to burst it, but to certify its power of
resistance. When a sailor has to navigate his ship under a heavy
gale and in a difficult channel; or when a general has to fight
against a superior force and on disadvantageous ground, skill and
courage are not only tested, but improved. The test has brought
experience, and by practice is every faculty perfected. So faith
grows stronger by exercise.

THE CURSES BORNE AND REMOVED
he Lord Jesus Christ is not only the Saviour of those
individuals who put their faith and trust in His finished
work but of the entire creation.

Since God is a God of love and mercy He devised a means


whereby the awful results of sin could be undone. Since God is a
God of justice He could not simply lift the curses.

The suffering of God manifest in the flesh can only be


understood in light of Genesis chapter three. Were God to
simply remove the curses He would be guilty of breaking His
word. Were God to remove them, by taking them upon Himself,
love and justice could meet together and undo the damage done
in Eden.

II. AFTER THE FALL (ROMANS 8:20)

Creatures made subject to vanity. The animal creation


suffers from the decreasing quality of soil and water due to
man's violation of God's laws of conservation, their use by
man for food and clothing, the necessity of their feeding
upon one another because sin brought death, their function
as sacrifices throughout the years of the old covenant.

III. UNTIL THE FALL IS REVERSED

The whole creation groans, travails and longs for the return
of Christ (Romans 8:19; 22-23).

IV. REVERSING THE FALL

At His coming the Lord will restore the physical earth to


its Edenic condition (Romans 8:21; Acts 3:19). All of
man's attempts to save the earth, preserve endangered
species, protect the environment and the like are attempts
to cover his sin with fig leaves. There are two things man
cannot do:

• Reverse the effects of the curse upon the earth.


• Satisfy his conscience by attempting to do so.

Note: At Calvary the Lord RE-deemed the whole of His creation


by taking its curse upon Himself. At His second coming He will
take to Himself that which He purchased at the cross.

Appendix
n this section we will discuss some items of doctrinal
interest relating to Genesis 3.

There are many peculiar doctrines regarding the nature of


the "forbidden fruit". The common depiction by unsaved artists
is the apple. No one knows who first called the lump in the
throat "Adam's Apple" but the term has taken permanent root in
the language of man.
It must be frustrating to infidels to have to use such terms.
Romans 10:8 declares, The word is nigh thee, even in thy
mouth. A Bible rejecting world cannot escape Bible truth.
This is not to say that Adam ate an apple but it is amazing
that a man is justified or condemned by his words (Matthew
12:37) and less than one inch from the base of his tongue is a
reminder of his first father Adam and the fall in the garden.
Others build an interesting case that the fruit was the grape.
This has a bit more Biblical backing than the apple when one
considers the verses regarding the vine tree. However, it is most
dangerous to state as definite truth what the Bible does not
definitely declare.
The particular fruit is not named in scripture, as such would
lead away from the essential nature of the sin. What ruined the
first family and their descendants was not the fruit but their
disobedience. By leaving the fruit unnamed we are not distracted
from the key element of the account.
An even more remarkable teaching is that the forbidden fruit
was adultery and that Eve had sexual relations with the serpent.
Before looking at the scriptural reasons given for this view
by those who proclaim it, let us consider Romans 2:1: Therefore
thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest:
for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for
thou that judgest doest the same things.

Unknown to modern psychiatry is the Biblical teaching that


man cannot keep from confessing his sins. While one may not
admit to being guilty of particular crimes against God and man,
what an individual continually decries in others indicates the
dark spot in his own heart. So, we must be careful when dealing
with teachers who continually dwell on certain sins in their
preaching and teaching.
Now, here is the logic behind the teaching that Eve
committed adultery in the garden: Not as Cain, who was of that
wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him?
Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous (1
John 3:12). Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my
folly: and indeed bear with me. For I am jealous over you with
godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I
may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I fear, lest by
any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so
your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in
Christ (2 Corinthians 11:1-3).
From these two passages it is argued that in the garden Eve
lost her virginity and that Cain was begotten by that wicked one.
This makes interesting speculation but will not bear up
under examination. The clear statement of Genesis 4:1 is And
Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain,
and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. This leaves no
question regarding the physical father of Cain.
In addition we have the Lord's rebuke of the Pharisees in
John 8:44: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your
father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and
abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When
he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and
the father of it. This certainly cannot mean that Satan was the
biological father of all these men.
The word of means belonging to or pertaining to. While 1
John 3:12 indicates Cain was possessed by the Devil it cannot be
made to teach that he was begotten by the Devil.

Another interesting point of speculation is the apparent


presence of Adam during the temptation of the woman.
It must be understood that many Christians read into the
Bible things they have been taught. For example: Mary rode a
donkey to Bethlehem, there were three wise men who came to
worship Jesus, and Paul was thrown from his horse on the
Damascus road. None of these things are found in the Bible, but
they have been taught for so long that people assume they are
scriptural.
In like manner, believers assume that Adam was not present
when the serpent made his attack on the woman. This is not
necessarily so.
Look carefully at the latter portion of verse 6: She took of
the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto HER
HUSBAND WITH HER; and he did eat. If we take the Bible to
mean exactly what it says the two of them were together.
In addition, there is a unique rendering of the pronouns in
the English of the Authorized King James Version. Those
pronouns which are singular begin with the letter T and those
which are plural begin with the letter Y. Hence; thy, thou, thine
are singular and ye, you, your are plural. While the modern
language translations claim to be easier to understand, they
actually obscure truth by doing away with this distinction. (See
the author’s work By Definition.)
With this in mind, read carefully the first five verses of the
chapter and notice that each time the serpent speaks he is
addressing a plurality of listeners.
While it is possible that Satan was merely referring to each
of them but not actually addressing each of them, the wording of
verses 6 and 7 seems to indicate Adam's presence.

Another principle found in this chapter, which runs


throughout the Bible, is the matter of drawing and driving.
We never read of the Lord forcing men to serve Him,
dragging men to the cross or pressuring men to receive His offer
of salvation. We read of the Spirit leading, drawing, etc.

On the other hand, when one has rejected the word of the
Lord we read of casting, driving, etc. So here, the word declares
he drove out the man.
This also implies some resistance on the part of Adam, just
as scripture teaches debating men at the White Throne Judgment.

It is easier to speculate on the animal that was slain to make


coats of skins than to speculate on the type of fruit that was
eaten.
The first man to die was a keeper of sheep and his
acceptable offering was the firstling of his flock (Genesis 4).
God promised to provide Himself a lamb for a sacrifice (Genesis
22). On Passover night, salvation was granted all those under the
blood of the lamb (Exodus 12). When Jesus was born in
Bethlehem the angels told shepherds, UNTO YOU is born this
day... (Luke 2). John the Baptist identified Christ as the Lamb
of God (John 1) and He was crucified as a lamb before his
shearers (Isaiah 53). In Revelation 5 John beheld the slain lamb
in the midst of the throne.
We have good reason to assume that lambs were slain in
Eden, shedding their innocent blood that God might cover the
results of man's sin.
