ENGLISH 9

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson with 80% proficiency, the students should be able to:

a. give the synonyms of the given words,


b. draw out the central idea of the poem, and
c. appreciate the significance of the poem.

b. Reference: A Journey through Anglo- American Literature, pp.105-106
c. Materials: Laptop, projector, PowerPoint slides, video clip, white screen, manila
paper, strips of paper

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
Before we begin with our lesson this morning, The students stand up.
let us ask the guidance of our Almighty God.
Requesting everyone to please rise.
2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning ma’am!
3. Energizer
-The teacher will play a video. The students perform the
energizer.

4. Checking of Attendance
Class, who are not around this morning?

5. Review
Before we proceed, what was our topic last We discussed about_________.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
Say something about this quote: “React
positively to life by looking for ways to
make your life better if not the best”
What comes into your mind as you read this?
You can write your thoughts in these strips of
paper (given strips of paper).
2. Presentation
Today, we will find out some insights in
making our life better if not the best through a
poem by Rudyard Kipling.
3. Discussion
-The teacher will present the poem “IF” by
Rudyard Kipling through the use of a video
clip.

Okay, with the use of your handout, kindly


read the poem silently. I will give you two
minutes.

Now, to fully understand the poem, let’s


uncover first some unfamiliar words, I will
group you into two.
I have here two envelopes with strips of paper
in it. One envelope contains the unfamiliar
words. Another envelope contains the
definitions/synonyms of the words inside the
first envelope.

Definitions:
1. It means “misfortune” or “bad luck.”
2. In other words, they are your “enemies” or “
“opponents.”
3. It means” stack” or “bundle.”
4. They are called “pretenders” or “fakes.”
5. They are also called “playing cards.”
6. It means “strength.”
7. This means “to bow” or to bend.”
8. It is a “trick “or “set up” or “deception”.
9. This calls for “good quality” or “morally good”.
10. In other words, these are your “achievements”,
“accomplishments”, or “success.”

- Two points for every correct answer of the


group. The group which garnered the
highest score will be declared as winner.
Now, that you already unlocked some difficult words. It
is your time to tell your understanding of the poem.

The poem is divided into four stanzas. I will group you


into four. First group will talk about the first stanza;
second group will tackle the second stanza, and so on and
so forth.
4. Generalization
“If” by Rudyard Kipling is written as if a
father is talking to his son, giving his son
advice on the way to behave to obtain the
reputation of being an outstanding citizen of
the community and the world.

In stanzas 2 to 3, the father is providing


examples of actions that are desirable, as
opposed attitudes that would not serve the son
well in building constructive relationships
with others.

In the last stanza of the poem, the father urges


his son to be generous and considerate in his
attitude toward others, striving to do the best
he can personally without demanding the
standard of others. “ If’ the son can succeed in
the following this advice, he will attain the
goal of becoming “ a Man” in possession of
“the Earth and everything that’s in it.”
