IV. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Motivation
Good morning, my dear students!
Good morning, ma’am!
Kindly arrange your chairs, pick up
scattered papers around you while I
check the attendance.
(Checks attendance)

(Responds when called)

As we start today’s lesson, I’d like
you to watch a 3-minute video clip about
senior citizens who are technology savvy.
Take note of the details you could get
from the video.
(Plays the video clip)

How did the senior citizens in the (Watches the video clip and takes
video use technology and the Internet in note of details given)
their daily lives?

The senior citizens use the new

technology to send e-mails and
communicate with their loved ones
through Skype and other applications.
They also use it for entertainment
such as playing games and having social
media accounts to be updated with their
loved ones.
How did the government help the
senior citizens become more media and
information literate?

The Department of Science and

Technology (DOST) launched a program
to aid the senior citizens into becoming
adept with the technology we now have. It
specifically aims to educate the senior
citizens with basic internet skills and
internet function. This is a partnership
between the Office of the Senior Citizens’
Affairs of Quezon City and some
employees of DOST’s Information and
Communication Technology Department
to gather senior citizens who are
interested to become internet savvy.
The focus of the program was on
communication tools. The first part was
on File Management (proper handling of
mouse), next was on Word Processing
(encoding), and lastly, the Internet
(communication tools: Skype, Facebook,
Twitter).
(Answers may vary)

What makes senior citizens, or (Answers vary)

people in general, media and information
literate?

Now think about your parents. Are

they as ‘techie’ as Lola Techie? How?

Since we’ve got different upbringings,

there is evident difference in how we look
at things.
B. Presentation
That is why according to
Aufderheide’s Framework (1992 as cited
in Koltay, 2011), a media literate person
can decode, evaluate, analyze, and
produce both print and electronic media.
Moreover, it exclaims the fundamental
objective of media and literacy is critical
autonomy relationship to all media.
Emphases in media literacy training
range widely, including informed
citizenship, aesthetic appreciation and
expression, social advocacy, self-esteem,
and consumer competence.
So, today, you will be learning more
of what a media and information literate
individual has and has to have in order to
cope with the transformations brought to
us by the drastically changing world of
Internet.
C. Lesson Proper
There are a lot of ways and different
technologies used by people for
businesses, commerce, and
communications.
(Distributes the printed articles)
I will give you ten minutes to read the
article retrieved from asiafoundation.org
about Social Media in the Philippines.
Afterwhich, I expect you to be able to
answer a set of questions.

How did social networking help in the

Philippine elections?

(Reads the article)

When ABS-CBN launched the “Boto

Mo Ipatrol Mo”, the network aggressively
reached out through advertisements and
roadshows to get people to sign up for
the system, and to post their observations
and comments. Thus, the May 2010
automated election improved with lower
levels of violence and generally accepted
as producing honest results.
Very good! Next question, how did
the Asia Foundation help the advocacies
of some human rights-based
organizations?

The Asia Foundation aided to

sponsor the first Philippine Blogging
Summit in May 2005. The foundation has
partnered with different organizations
who try to move forward through
technology and they tried to reach out to
the general public after five years.

Excellent! How did USAID and the

authors help non-government
organizations help in their advocacies
and objectives?

With USAID’s support to the Asia

Foundation, they conducted the first
series of trainings in June 2010 on
“Digital Activism.” The training focused on
the use of social networking sites
(Facebook), blogging (WordPress),
microblogging (Twitter), web tools and
applications (Google documents), live
streaming, and mobile activism.
Having a positive result, the
Strengthening Human Rights in the
Philippines (SHRP) program, in
partnership with DAKILA, conducted an
Expanded Digital Activism Training
wherein 100 NGOs and key government
agencies were trained throughout the
country. An online communication plan
was introduced as one of the new
modules for this second series.
Moreover, social networking sites are
incorporated in official communication
plans of the organizations, thus
optimizing digital media as one of its
components.
Each organization represented in the
training has established at least one form
of web presence for their organization.
The participants have since started using
either organizational or personal online
accounts in promoting their causes and
have adopted a strategic approach to
conduct human rights advocacy work in
digital media.

Ardan Sali used the blog he created

to design a prototype website of Tiyakap
Kawagib that has organized clean pages
and user-friendly interface.

Great. Now, how did Ardan Sali of #WeWantPnoyTo was a call to make
the Bangsamoro Center for Just Peace in President NoyNoy Aquino aware of the
the Philippines use social networking in different concerns of advocates which
its advocacies? spread among the Expanded Digital
Activism participants and members of
their organization.
(Answers vary)

Very good! Last question, what was

the purpose of #WeWantPnoyTo? Do you
think it was an effective tool for
awareness and change?

Those are all good points.

D. Application
Now, as an application of what you
have just learned through our discussion
on the article, accomplish this graphic
organizer.
(Distributes graphic organizer)
First, you will have to choose a social
media network such as Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, etc. Then, select a
sector or a community where this SMN
will be used (education, tourism,
business, fisherfolk, farmers, barangay
level, student council, news company,
etc.)
Take note that you only have to use
key words. Limit your answers to 3
benefits and 3 issues or challenges.

(Collects the answered graphic

organizers)

(Does the activity)

E. Generalization
Were you able to learn something
today?

Yes, ma’am.
Alright. To sum it up, here’s a list of
the different effects of being a media and
information literate.
(Plays slides)
Do you see yourself now as a media
and information literate individual?

(Answers may vary)

V. EVALUATION
(Have the learners watch the 3-minute excerpt of the debate “The Anxiety Over
the Impact of Technology on Children”)
Answer the following questions based from the video you watched.
1. What is the stand of Mr. Nicholas Carr on the issue? Is he on the affirmative or
on the negative? What are his arguments?
2. What is the stand of Ms. Genevieve Bell on the issue? Is he on the affirmative
or on the negative? What are his arguments?
3. Do you think elementary school children should be allowed to own smart
phones? Explain.

VI. ASSIGNMENT
(Discuss with the learners the mechanics of the classroom debate: conduct, time,
rebuttal, and the roles of students.)
Next meeting, we will have a simple debate on the following topics:
1. Media and information technologies promote greater socio-political
participation among the citizens
2. Media and information technologies improve learning environments
(Group the students as to Affirmative Group and Negative Group. Give the rubrics
to each group.)

VII. REMARKS
Transfer of learning (through a simple debate) will be conducted on the next
meeting.
