Potential Employer

School Principal
Eastside Middle School
1324 Eastside Street
Harrisonburg, VA 22801

Dear Potential Employer,

I am writing in response to your job advertisement for an instrumental music teacher position at
Eastside Middle School. I am currently completing my bachelor’s degree in music education at
James Madison University, and am expected to graduate in the Spring of 2021.

As a music educator, I want to expose students to a diverse selection of music, drawing on

western classics, folk music, and contemporary works. I also believe it is important to
incorporate music that the students enjoy, to help them make real world connections and apply
content to modern scenarios. To facilitate this, I will design individual, group, and ensemble
experiences that encourage students to experiment and apply what they know to develop new
skills. Through these experiences, students will learn about performance standards, music theory
and composition, and technical instrumental skills. Additionally, this design will help students
develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills through exploration. Finally, students will
be able to use these skills in multidisciplinary projects that exemplify various ways they can use
music in the world.

I believe a student-centered approach is most effective in the music classroom. Through specific,
but open-ended experiences, students can explore new content and learn in ways that are most
beneficial to them. Additionally, collaboration will provide opportunities for students to teach
and learn from each other, creating an inclusive and understanding environment. In ensemble, we
will focus on technical skills and musical creativity. Students will have opportunities to make
decisions regarding how to play the pieces and to explain their reasoning. This approach will
encourage students to think critically about the repertoire and apply their musical understanding
and skills in context. Furthermore, it will motivate students to take initiative in class and develop
as individual thinkers and learners.

I am excited by the opportunity to be Eastside Middle School’s new instrumental music

educator. Thank you for your consideration.
