A Study on The Range of Vehicles Produced by

TATA MOTORS LTD.

About Tata Motors: The first vehicle of Tata Motors Ltd was rolled out in the
year 1954 (from the then TELCO). Since then, more than 6 million Tata vehicles have rolled over
the roads in India and abroad. It was the first Indian company from the engineering sector, to be
listed in the Newyork Stock Exchange. Today, Tata Motors has emerged into an international
automobile manufacturing company, with its sales and service network, subsidiaries and joint
ventures at different parts of the world. It is the world’s 2nd largest manufacturer of buses and
4th largest in truck manufacturing.

Range of Vehicles: For each purpose, Tata Motors has a vehicle from them,
considering the needs. Vehicles from Tata Motors are fuel efficient and compliant to emission
norms, by the technology they have incorporated in each segment. The range of vehicles from Tata
Motors can be broadly classified into
 Passenger Cars
 Utility Vehicles
 Commercial Vehicles

Passenger Cars: The passenger cars from Tata Motors are Tata Indica in hatchback
segment, Tata Indigo in sedan segment, Indigo Marina in station wagon segment and Tata Nano in
small car segment .
Tata Indica is available in 3 main models, named Indica V2, Indica V2 Xeta and Indica
Vista. All the three have a front engine front wheel drive layout. Engines of all models are, Inline 4
cylindered and is available with Petrol, Diesel, LPG and hybrid fuel system, based on models and
variants. On compliance with emission criterias, Tata Indica is available in BSII, BSIII and BSIV
emission standards.
The Indica V2 is available in 2 variants DLS and DLE. Both the variants are of Indirect
Diesel Injection engines with a displacement capacity of 1.4Litres and microprocessor based EMS.

It is equipped with a synchromesh transmission system having 5 forward gears and a reverse gear,
with a maximum power output of 53.5PS at an RPM of 5500 and maximum torque output of
8.5Kg at 2500 RPM. It has a rack and pinion steering mechanism with a powered one in DLS
model. Indica V2 is available in BSII and BSIII emission standards. It has an overall fuel
efficiency of about 16.5Km/L. The braking system is of disc at front and drum at rear wheels with
diagonally splitted hydraulic system. The instrument panel is equipped with a tachometer in both
the variants.
The Indica V2 Xeta is available in both Petrol and with LPG option fuel engines with Multi
Point Fuel Injection System, aided with a 32 bit microcontroller and 1.2 Litres displacement
capacity. The transmission is of synchromesh system with 5 forward and a reverse gear. It is
capable of providing a power output of 65.3PS in Petrol and 62 PS in LPG at 5000 RPM and
torque output of 102Nm in Petrol and 100Nm in LPG at 2600 RPM. The brake system is enhanced
with ventilated disc at front and drum at rear, with a diagonally splitted vaccum assisted in the
petrol variant and hydraulic system in the one with LPG option. It is having a power steering
option variant and all with rack and pinion mechanism and equipped with tachometer on the
instrument panel.
Indica Vista is available in both BSIII Diesel, BSIV Diesel & BSIV Petrol engines. It is the
high end version of the Indica series, incorporated with FIAT engines, safety features like
ABS(Antilock Brake System) and airbags and engine immobilizer as a security feature. For
controlled emission and fuel efficiency the Petrol variant (Safire engine) has MPFI , the diesel BS
IV variant (Quadrajet engine) has CR (Common Rail) and the BS III Diesel variant (TDi) has
turbocharged engine in it. It has a synchromesh transmission system with overdrive having 5
forward and a reverse gear . The Safire and Quadrajet engine are having displacement capacity of
1.2 Litres and the TDi engine with 1.4 Litres. Indica Vista is with Eurotech gear boxes and
Drivetech4 technology which ensures minimal vibration and precise gear shifting. For controlling
the pollutants from emissions, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) technology has been introduced
in the BS IV variants. It has a power assisted rack and pinion steering mechanism and
synchromesh with overdrive transmission system having 5 forward and a reverse gear in it. It has
a diagonally splitted hydraulic brake system with disc at front and drum at rear. The Quadrajet
variant has better power otput and maximum torque when compared to other variants.

Tata Indigo the three boxed sedan is the luxury variant of Indica, from Tata Motors, with
three main models having some special features incorporated in it. The three models available in
Indigo platform are the Indigo CS, Indigo XL and Indigo Manza.
Tata Indigo CS is available in both Petrol and Diesel fuel engines with EGR system,
compliant with BS IV emission standards. The Diesel engined version is equipped with CR and

DOHC (Dual Over Head Camshaft) with 16 valves. It has a displacement capacity of 1.4 Litres
with synchromesh transmission system with overdrive having 5 forward and a reverse gear in it,
capable of producing maximum power of 70PS at 4000 RPM and torque of 140Nm at 1800-3000
RPM. The Petrol engine is having a capacity of 1.2 Litres with MPFI and a 32 bit microprocessor.
The transmission is same as that of the Diesel one, and can produce a maximum power of 65PS at
5000RPM and torque of 100Nm at 2700 RPM. The car is equipped with power steering and the
front and rear brakes are Disc and Drum respectively actuated with vaccum assisted independent
dual circuit diagonal split hydraulic brake system with tandem master cylinder.
Tata Indigo XL is available in 1.4Litre Diesel and Petrol engine. The Petrol engine is having
16 valves with Twin Cam and MPFI system with a 32 bit microprocessor and the 16 valved diesel
engine is having DICOR (Direct Injection Common Rail). The collapsible steering which adds to
the safety features is of powered rack and pinion. The braking system, transmission system, power
output and torque are similar to the Indigo CS. The modern class comfortable features added in
Indigo XL makes it different from the Indigo CS.
Indigo Manza can be considered more or less the sedan version of Indica Vista with
Quadrajet (Diesel) and Safire (Petrol) engines. Indigo Manza with Safire engine with 1.4Litre
capacity is equipped with Continuous Variable Cam Phaser (CCVP) and Intelligent Port Resizer
(IPR), where the Manza with Quadrajet engine is equipped with CR and Variable Geometry
Turbocharger (VGT). Along with this, the introduction of EGR system further reduces the
emissions. Manza is equipped with safety features like ABS (Antilock Brake System) and Airbag
system in some of its variants.
Indigo Marina is body shaped as a station wagon, which provides a spacious luggage
compartment at the rear side. Other than the exterior design, it is similar in performance and
features with Indigo XL.
Tata Nano, known as ‘The People’s Car’ is the icon of Tata Motors before the world. It is
the low priced among all the cars available in the world market today, with required safety
features and emission regulators. It has a 2 cylindered Petrol engine with MPFI with displacement
capacity of 624cc. It is available in 3 variants with both BS II and BS III emission standards. It has
a rear engine rear wheel drive layout and has a synchromesh transmission system for all the 4
forward gears with an over drive for the fourth gear and slidingmesh system for the reverse gear
and have an output of 35PS at 5250RPM and maximum torque of 48Nm at 3500RPM. It has drum
brakes at both front and rear wheels assisted with dual circuit vertical split operated by tandem
master cylinder.

Utility Vehicles: The utility vehicle range of Tata Motors includes Tata Safari, Tata
Sumo, Sumo Grande and Tata Xenon. Sumo series is having a seating capacity of maximum 9.

Tata Safari is engined with 2.2L Diesel engine with 16 valves, DOHC, DICOR and a
performance enhancing Variable Turbine Technology along with a 32 bit microprocessor to make
it fuel efficient and is available in both BS III and BS IV emission standards. It uses a catalytic
converter and EGR system to achieve the BS IV standard. It is available with rear wheel drive and
all wheel drive options and has advanced safety feature options like airbags and ABS with
Electronic Brake Distribution.
Tata Sumo Victa is available with 2L (IDI) In Direct Injection and 3L (DI) Direct
Injection Diesel engines available in both BS II and BS III standards. The Sumo victa GX with 2L
IDI engined vehicle is having maximum output and torque of 90PS and 190Nm. It has the lowest
turning radius of 4.9 meters. It has disc and drum brakes at front and rear respectively. Some
variants are equipped with power steering option also.
Tata Sumo Grande has two models of one with 2Litre Turbocharged Diesel engine and
another with 2.2Litre DICOR engine with 16 valves and DOHC and 32 bit microprocessor. Both
are of BSIII standard. Both are having synchromesh with overdrive transmission system with 5
forward gears. The DICOR based Grande is capable of discharging a maximum output of 120PS
and torque of 250Nm. The braking system is same for the both with ventilated disc at front and
adjustable drum at rear.
Tata Xenon has 2 models, one with 4X2 drive and the other with 4X4 drive. Both are with
2.2L 16 valved DICOR engine with DOHC. It also have 32 bit microprocessor and Variable
Turbine Technology for fuel efficiency. It is equipped with power steering and safety features like
anti submarine seats, ABS and Airbags. It has a seating capacity of 5.

Commercial Vehicles (CVs): Tata Motors is the leader in commercial vehicle


segment in India and as stated earlier, it is the world’s 2nd largest bus manufacturer and 4th
largest truck manufacturer. Its vehicle range in this segment is vast as about 130 different models
for different purposes, ranging from Small CVs, Light CVs, Intermediate CVs, Medium CVs,
Heavy CVs and Commercial Passenger Vehicles. The maximum load capacity of Tata CVs ranges
from about 2 tons to 40 tons. The commercial vehicle models ranges from Tata 207 DI to Tata
Prima World Trucks. The vehicle model range in Commercial Passenger Vehicles ranges from the
Tata Magic (with seating capacity of 5 to 8 persons) to the Tata Starbus (with seating capacity of
16 to 67 persons) and the Tata CNG- Electric hybrid buses.
Besides the above mentioned ranges of vehicles, Tata Motors have a wide range of Special
Purpose Vehicles and Vehicles for Defence Purposes also from them.
