Make Unimas composting product

Based on the survey, the respondents were mainly from the Faculty of Resource Science
and Technology (FSTS), Faculty of Engineering (FK) and Faculty of Computer Science and
Information System (FSKSM) and Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts (FSGK), with FSTS
being the highest. The year of study ranged from Year 1 to Yea 4. The age of the respondents
ranged from 19 to 28, with 20 being the highest age group. For the race, there were only one
Pakistani student, one Kadazan student, one local Brunei student, and only one Iban student.
The rest were Malays.
Regarding the composting practice, most of the respondents were aware of the
importance of composting. They knew it was important for erosion control, supplying humus
and nutrients and providing a growing medium. Some even mentioned about biodiesel
production and composting being cost-efficient. However, not many of them practiced
composting when they were asked on the frequency of doing the activity. Very few even really
practiced it. The product that were composted included food waste, brown waste, green waste,
paper waste and biodegradable plastics, with food waste being composted the most. The way
they composted was very common, like throwing the items on the ground or burying them.
About the awareness of composting, the respondents opinionated that composting was
important. They also were on the opinion that the residential students were aware of the need
of practicing composting, that the sense of urgency for doing so was fairly average. Most
agreed on holding an awareness talk being more suitable to spread awareness. One interesting
suggestion was to make Unimas to produce items from composting for commercialization.
Our group was aware of the weaknesses in the survey. The respondents should be at
least 50. Also, the race of the respondents was biased towards Malay. Our group aimed to hand
out the survey to a more diverse group of students, reaching the number to 50.
