ASSIGNMENT-3

QUESTIONS:

1. A laminate with 30º fiber orientation is subjected to σx=50MPa, σy=25 MPa and τxy=10
MPa. Find εx, εy and γxy. Check whether the lamina will stand the stress using T-sai Hill
failure theory. Given El=40 GPa, Et=8 GPa, Glt= 4Gpa, νlt=0.25, X=1000 MPa, Y=35 MPa
and S=95 MPa.

2. Explain Tsai-Hill failure theory with advantages and disadvantages.

3. A [0/30/-45] Graphite/epoxy laminate is subjected to load of Nx = Ny =1000 N/m, Using

the properties of unidirectional graphite/epoxy (E1 = 181GPa,E2 = 10.3GPa, G12 =7.17GPa,
ν12 = 0.28) and assuming that each lamina is 5 mm thick, find

i) Midplane strains and curvatures

ii) Global and local stresses on top surface of 30̊ ply.

4. Derive the strain-Displacement equations for plate under in-plane loads such as shear and
axial forces and bending and twisting moments using classical lamination theory.

5. Explain Tsai-Wu failure theory with advantages and disadvantages.

6. Find the following for a 60° angle lamina of graphite/epoxy. Use the properties of
unidirectional graphite/epoxy lamina from the table.
i) Transformed compliance matrix
ii) Transformed reduced stiffness matrix
iii) If the applied stress is σx=2 MPa, σy=–3 MPa, and τxy=4 MPa, also find
iv) Global strains
v) Local strains
vi) Local stresses
vii) Principal stresses
viii) Maximum shear stress
ix) Principal strains
x) Maximum shear strain

7.Write down the [Q] matrices and determine all the terms in [A],[B] and[D] matrices for a
[0/90/0] laminate with the following lamina properties. E1=140 GPa, E2=10 GPa, ν12=0.3
and G12=5 GPa. Q12 for 0º and 90º laminate are equal to each other. Lamina thickness =
0.125 mm.
