The course is aimed at those students who
are looking to develop a career in the real
estate industry, but who may be unsure
of the direction they wish to take. The
programme applies the utmost rigour in the
analysis of real estate and allows entry into
a wide variety of career paths.
This Masters course is designed to provide a
broad background in real estate investment,
appraisal and development. The core
modules provide coverage of a wide variety
of areas in real estate including: real estate
finance, valuation, development, market
analysis and economics.
This Masters covers the core concepts and
issues relating to both real estate markets
and quantitative skills. The second and third
terms expand this knowledge base into the
relevant areas.
Specialist Masters Programme
Also covered are topics relevant to the
analysis and management of real estate
assets. Students can choose from a wide
range of subjects for their Business
Research Project including: real estate
development, appraisal, market analysis,
investment and securitisation.

a consultant for a trading and
risk management consultancy. I
understood if wanted a change of
career direction into the property
industry, I would require a RICs
accredited degree. I selected Cass
as I have seen first-hand how
highly regarded the courses are
in both the City and property
industry. The course has provided
a broad knowledge base, meaning
I can enter the profession with
confidence. I would eventually
like to start my own property
consultancy. Firstly, I hope to pass

Competence and gain industry

This course is aimed at those wishing to
enter or advance their careers in the fields
of real estate investment management,
real estate finance and the securitised
real estate markets. It combines the rigour
of a mainstream finance course with the
direct application of financial theory and
techniques in a real estate context.
The Masters deals extensively with the growth
in the securitised real estate markets of real
estate investment trusts and mortgage-backed
securities. It also examines the growing real
estate derivatives market.
The programme is designed for students
with relevant undergraduate degrees or
work experience and strong quantitative
skills. It provides an ideal foundation for
those wishing to study for the Investment
Management Certificate or the Chartered
Financial Analyst examinations. It also
offers a route of entry to the UK Investment
Property Forum.
The syllabus shares a number of common
subjects with the MSc in Real Estate, and
covers core concepts and issues relating to
both real estate markets and quantitative
skills. The second and third terms expand this
knowledge base into the appropriate
areas for the two courses.
The Real Estate faculty at Cass is recognised
as one of the leading research groups in
Europe both in its high quality Masters
programmes, and its industry-leading
research and this expertise feeds directly
into the Masters programmes. The Real
Estate faculty is also the first in the UK to
be part of a finance department within a

I heard about Cass though several
former colleagues who had
studied here. The MSc enjoys
a vastly superior reputation in
the market compared to those
offered by other institutions.
Before starting the course I was
working in real estate advisory
and transaction support. I chose
to study for the MSc as the credit
crunch offered me an opportunity
to reflect on my personal goals
and requirements for my next
career phase. The scope of the
course resulted in my studying
more general aspects of finance,
portfolio management and
quantitative analysis, which
are far more advanced than
anything I have been exposed
to in a work environment.

Cass Business School

The name of City University’s Business School
is Sir John Cass Business School, City of
London or Cass Business School for short.

Sir John Cass’s Foundation

The Foundation has supported education in
London since Sir John Cass set up a school
in Aldgate in 1710. He was born in the City of
London in 1661 and served as MP for the City.
He was knighted in 1713.

In May 2001, the Foundation made a

generous donation to the Business School’s
new building project and continues to provide
ongoing support to the Business School.
