|
What is a Groove?

|
Types of Grooves

2 - Types of Grooves:
Rolled – The wall of the pipe is pressed between two dies, which

physically deforms the wall; resulting in the grooved shape

Cut – The wall of the pipe is cut along its outside diameter, which

removes material from the wall; resulting in the grooved shape

|
Roll vs. Cut

|
Roll Groove

• Place pipe between a roll set

• Rotate and compress pipe

|
Rigid and Flexible Couplings

|
Rigid vs. Flexible

Rigid Flexible
Where rigidity is desired: Where flexibility is desired:
• Risers • At or near pumps and
equipment
• Mains
• Distribution • Can be substituted for flex
connectors
• Hangs like a welded • To substitute in lieu of
system expansion joints (hangers
and guides required)
• At elbows on flexible loop

|
Rigid vs. Flexible

// Flexible Couplings

40 |

What Makes a Coupling Flexible?

The coupling is designed to “float” without shoulder or key

contact on the pipe

|
What Makes a Coupling Flexible?

Flexible Couplings
Provides Angular Deflection Provides Expansion & Contraction

Misalignment

|
Vibration absorption

Provides Vibration and

Noise Attenuation
Eliminating Flex Connectors:

The use of a minimum of 3

SHURJOINT flexible couplings used in
close proximity to the source of
vibration will provide equal or better
vibration attenuation performance than
that of expensive flexible connectors.
The transmission of vibration will be
further reduced with the use of
additional SHURJOINT couplings,
whether flexible or rigid, throughout the
system.
|
Expansion & Contraction

Couplings need to be treated as

expansion joints if they are used for
that purpose

Need to be properly gapped:

1. Butted for thermal pipe contraction

2. Gapped for thermal expansion

3. Set for proper position at installation
