PLANNING HOLIDAYS

Tina: Hi, my dear friends. What are you going to do next holidays?

Carol: Hi, Tina. I am going camping with my grandparents.

Tom: Really? Where are you going to go?

Carol: We are going to go to Lembah Hijau. Do you want to go with us?

Tina: Sure, that´s a great idea.

Tom: Sorry, Carol. I can´t go because I will study for my English test.

Carol: Oh, don´t worry! So, when will you go on holidays?

Tom: I´m not sure, I think I will go when I finish my course of English course.

Tina: Well, what are we going to need for camping?

Tom: Maybe, you will need a sleeping bag, repellent insects and a map.

Carol: Don´t forget your swimsuit and sunglasses!

Tina: What are we going to do there?

Carol: Well, first we are going to fish, swim and sing a lot of songs in the campfire.

Tom: When will you come back?

Carol: I promise we will be back in one week to help you with your test.

Tina: Sure. If you have a ten in your test, we will go to Maribaya the

Registering for Gifts.

Anne: I have an invitation to my cousin's wedding.

Paula: Are you going to go?

Anne: Of course. It's going to be in a beautiful hotel.

Paula: What is the tradition about buying gifts in the U.S.?

Anne: Some people give money.

Paula: Money? Is that a good gift?

Anne: Yes, they are a young couple and they need a lot of money to start their new home. But I am
not going to give them money. I'm going to check their "bridal registry " at the
department store.
Paula: What's that ?

Anne: When a couple is planning a wedding, they often register for gifts at a store. That means that
they choose gifts that they want to receive. When I go to the store, I am going to look at
the list and see what they want.

Paula: Is this an American custom?

Anne: Yes. I think it's a good idea. This way, my cousin and his new wife are going to get
exactly what they need. They are not going to get five toasters and six food
processors.

A long weekend is coming. Riri, Santi, and Bayu are talking about their plans.

Riri : It will be a long weekend soon. Do you have any plans?

Santi : Uhm, I’m not sure. I don’t have any idea yet. I think I might stay at home.

Bayu : Stay at home? Well, you could do something more interesting!

Let’s Practice

Reading Comprehension.
I. Read the text and answer the following questions.

LIVING IN SPACE

I. Some day people will live in space. By the end of the century there will, be permanent
settlements that will allow people to lead a normal life in space. Hundreds of astronauts are going
to work and live in the space station, which will take ten years to build.

II. In some way, living on the moon will be easier than living on a space station. And it will be
cheaper because people won’t bring everything from the earth by rockets. The space city will be
like a gigantic glass wheel that will contain buildings, forms, factories and special meeting-places.
Inside it, people won’t live differently from small towns on Earth. It will have air so that inhabitants

UKBM ING-3.3/4.3/1/3 Page 14

can breathe, and they won’t need to wear special space-suits inside the buildings.

III. Scientists also believe that they will obtain water from a large ice lake on the moon. People won’t
have to do housework because robots will do that for them. Food won’t be a problem, as settlers
won’t need to eat. Instead, they will take a pill three times a day!

IV. The first group of astronauts will live on the moon for six months and
then they will return to earth and another group will travel. This will
be repeated until the first settlers can establish permanently in the
new city. Life on the moon will only be the beginning. We hope they
will use the knowledge we get there to plan expeditions to Mars,
Mercury and even Pluto.

B. READING
I. Read the text below and then choose the best answer.

Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English but it is difficult to find the best
method. Is it better to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country?

The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language
all the time you are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you
go. Another advantage is that you have to speak the language if you are with other people. In Italy,
it is always possible, in the class, to speak Italian if you want to and the learning is slower.

On the other hand, there are also advantages to staying at home to study. You don't have to make
big changes to your life. As well as this, it is also a lot cheaper than going to Britain but it is never
possible to achieve the results of living in the UK. If you have a good teacher in Italy, I think you can
learn in a more concentrated way than being in Britain without going to a school.

So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to
spend some time in the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being here in Italy is the
only viable option. The most important thing to do in this situation is to maximise your opportunities:
to speak only English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside the class.
