Activity 1: Questions

Startup Activity 15 minutes

1. Why do we stand up and stay still when we sing our national


anthems?
2. How do you feel when someone from your country wins a gold medal
in an international sports competition like the Olympics? Why?
3. How do you feel when racist comments are said about you or
someone from your country?

Students write down their thoughts then share their thoughts with other
students in class about what they think about that help students notice the
two different feelings from the scenarios discussed
20 minutes
Activity 2: Questions?

What is a nation? What are the different aspects that make people feel like
they belong to a certain nation?
Guide students in realizing that a nation is a group of people with common
cultural heritage like language, ancestry, religion, origin, etc.

What is nationalism?

Guide students to realizing that it is the extreme form of love and a sense of
belonging to one’s country or group of people often marked by feelings of
superiority over other countries or other groups of people.

Using various relevant examples and starting with the unit focus which is
Equality in South Africa, show how nationalism can have positive and
negative outcomes.

Extension Activity: 10 minutes

Complete the word match in your work book and answer all the reflection
questions from your workbook in your exercise book. The work due in the
next lesson.

Conclusion: Summarize the lesson and answer any questions students
have nationalism.

Reflection after lesson

i. Using small group instructions could have saved time rather than allowing students to share in whole class discussions
which take a lot of time to reach all students contributions.
ii. Varying activities in the lesson for instance instead of asking them how they feel about the scenarios which were meant
to lead them to the feelings of nationalism, I could have showed them videos of the scenarios. For example, a video of
a Kenyan athlete on the finish line winning a marathon and ask them how it makes them feel as Kenyans.
iii. Using a settling in activity for the learners to quickly settle down before the lesson starts to help save time and help
students settle down quickly.
