Schedule of Assignments for Unit 3:

The Baroque and the Enlightenment

Mon 3/18: Review for Unit 2; perhaps we’ll begin discussing the Baroque: Things go dark, dramatic and emotional.

Wed 3/20: Unit 2 Quiz. We may begin discussing some art: Carravaggio, Bernini, and a weird new development in
the arts: Still Life painting. Textbook Reading Assignment: Chapter 15 in Culture and Values: “The
Seventeenth Century.”

Fri 3/22: Today we’ll look at one of the darkest, most emotional selections of works you’ll ever read: some of
Satan’s great speeches from Paradise Lost (handout).

Due Today -- Read & respond assignment #3.1: It’s fancy language, but try to read and some of
Satan’s solo speeches from Milton’s Paradise Lost. What is your affective response to the contents of the
speeches (never mind the speaker, for the moment)? How are they like or unlike the soliloquys of Hamlet
we read for our last unit?

Mon 3/25 – Fri 3/29: Spring Vacation!

Mon 4/1: On the Enlightenment: An age of reason and excess. Textbook Reading Assignment: Chapter 16 in
Culture and Values: “The Eighteenth Century.”

Wed 4/3: Art, going into the 18th century: The Enlightenment. We’ll look at Watteau and David, a study in
contrasts.

Fri 4/5: More on the Enlightenment. Reading Assignment 3.2: First, google “18th century Women’s fashion,”
and then click “images.” Then, read the first selection from the Unit 3 Enlightenment reader called “the
Trial of the Petticoat,” by Addison and Steele.

Due Today -- Read & respond assignment #3.2: What point is the author of this essay trying to make
about the excesses of fashion – and how is this point made?

Mon 4/8: More on the Enlightenment. Reading Assignment 3.4: Read the other two selections in the
Enlightenment reader – Jonathan Swift’s “Modest proposal” and Thomas Jefferson’s “Declaration of
Independence.”

Due Today -- Read & respond assignment #3.4: What different strategies do these authors use in
attempting to apply reason to political and social problems?

Wed 4/10: Finally, some music! Today we’ll look at (and listen to) some of the innovations of the baroque and
Enlightenment masters -- J. S. Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart.

Due Today -- Read & respond assignment #3.3: Listen to the musical selections linked on the website.
Pick one that grabs your attention and write what you like or dislike (or seems odd or alien) about it.

Fri 4/12: Irrationality in the Age of Reason: Clothes, Gardens, and an interesting new development in the arts:
Meissen porcelain.

Mon 4/15: Review day and catch up.

Wed 4/17: Review and Quiz: The Baroque and the Enlightenment.
