Final Project

Your Play!
Objective: Present a five to seven minute play (no longer than seven
minutes, please) that is based on a myth or fairy tale. As a group you
will choose a myth or fairy tale that one of the group members has
already been working with.

Due:
Group A: December 1st (Group B present as the audience)
Group B: December 6th (Group A present as the audience)

Please note: both groups need to be present for ALL of the

performances. So, that means: for these two weeks, everyone
needs to be in class.

Group responsibilities will include:

*The Director:
 The leader of the group. Any questions I have about the status of
your project will be addressed to the director.

 Will stage the scene that is to be presented on the assigned day.

 Will organize rehearsals with actors.

 Will present a “vision” or “point of view” for the designers, from

which they will create their respective designs for the play.

*The Playwright:
 Will put the story into a play format. If you’re not sure what that
looks like, get thee to a library. Points will be taken off for
incorrect format. This will be turned in to me on the day of the
performance.

 Will present a unique point of view for the play if he/she chooses.
For example: you can put your story into a “modern” setting.

 Needs to have the first draft of the play by the next group
meeting so the rest of the group can begin their work. This may
sound daunting, but I’m looking for a play that is between five
and seven minutes long.

*The Actors:
 Will meet with the director to rehearse.

 Will memorize their lines.

 Will be penalized (lose points) for not showing up to rehearsals or

not having his/her lines memorized.

* Each group MUST have a director, actors, and a playwright.

Designers:
 Will cooperate with the director and playwright to create a
design that comes from a singular point of view. For example: If
the play is set in New York City, circa 2010 and you design
costumes for Medieval Britain, circa 1450 you will have points
deducted.

 Will create an inspiration collage and/or design

renderings/soundscape (for sound designers) for their design.
If you are only creating an inspiration collage (without any
renderings) it needs to be incredibly detailed and specific. For
example: If you are creating a collage for lighting, I need to know
when in the play each particular “look” is occurring. You can use
labels that say “Little Red leaves home” or specific lines from the
play that tell me when it’s occurring. If you are creating
renderings, they need to be comprehensive. For example: there
needs to be a costume rendering for each character in the play.

 Will present their designs before the play is presented on the day
of the performance.

Advertising:
 Will create three distinct posters/flyers for the play.

 Will create a program/playbill for the play that includes one of

the poster designs and biographies of the actors and designers.
You can get an example of these bios from any of the Krannert
programs.

Grading:
Total points available: 225 points (that’s more than 20% of your
entire grade for the semester!)

Group points: 125 points

Each group will be evaluated as a whole. I will be evaluating
cohesiveness of the “production” with respect to the adaptation,
staging, acting, and design.

Questions I will be asking:

Do all of these elements look like they belong to the same play?
Does it seem as though the group worked together as a production
team?

Individual points: 100 points

Each individual will be evaluated on his/her individual contribution to
the production. Any complaints from group members that a specific
group member has not been contributing will factor into this grade.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF SOMEONE IN YOUR GROUP IS NOT
CONTRIBUTING/PARTICIPATING. There is no way for me to know
this unless you tell me.

Questions I will be asking:

Does it appear that he/she worked as a member of the group?
Does it appear that he/she has contributed significantly to the success
of the group?

A final note:
You will not have enough time in class to
complete your final project. You will need to
meet outside of class and I will expect you to.
Please remember that you do not have a final
exam for the lecture; this is, in essence, your
final. (Worth 20% of your overall grade!)
