A head nurse is the one who assumes responsibility for managing the Human and material re-
sources of a nursing unit and takes lead in developing to provide quality patient care and an environment
conductive to staff growth and satisfaction. Today is my 2nd rotation at Station 4-C and it is my turn to
be a head nurse, my staff nurses are Santos, Sisona, Tiongson and Verso. I checked their attendance,
proper grooming and paraphernalia. When saving lives, you really need to have a cooperation with your
staff nurses and a presence of mind. My given task for today are monitoring patient’s vital signs, health
assessment, checking of contraptions, NGT feeding, giving of medication, measuring intake and output,
bedside care and creating NCP for our patient. You have to prepare for your activities and you need to
monitor your staff nurses all the time. Honestly, I even forgot how it is to urinate because I was busy
facilitating my staff nurses. You have to comply with the paper works and you need to evaluate your
staff. You are the boss and the decision always comes from you it’s like you call the shot and you are the
final say. I created schedule for our activities today so that I can manage my time wisely and I make sure
that all of the task given to my staff are done at the right time like taking vital signs and giving medication
ordered by the Physician.

I had a great experience as a head nurse and I may say that it really aided in my learning. As a
student nurse, I know that every day I will touch a life or a life will touch mine. Learn from your experi-
ence, and improve it. Knowing is not enough, I must apply. Willing is not enough, I must do.
