Initial Check
Inspect the camshaft gear position indicator.
Turn keyswitch OFF
Connect all components.
Make sure the pin in the camshaft gear is not missing or
damaged.
Measure
The pin is to be flush with the face of the gear within a specific
tolerance. Two measurements are taken to determine if the
sensor is located correctly. Each measurement must be taken
through the sensor hole. Determine if the flushness of the pin,
relative to front cover and gear face, is within specifications.
Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the front
cover (1) to the face of the gear (2) through the sensor hole
nearest the pin.
Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the front
cover (1) to the pin (3).
Calculate the difference between the two measurements. If the
difference is not within the specification listed below, the
sensor will need to be adjusted relative to the gear face.
Preparatory Steps
WARNING
This component or assembly weighs greater than 23 kg
[50 lb]. To prevent serious personal injury, be sure to have
assistance or use appropriate lifting equipment to lift this
component or assembly.
Remove
Use a mallet and drift. Bend the lockplates away from the two
mounting capscrews.
Remove the capscrews and the lockplates. These capscrews
must be removed to allow clearance for the gear puller.
WARNING
The reversible jaw feet must point out as shown. Incorrect
placement of the feet can allow the tool to come loose
when removing the gear. Personal injury can result.
Assemble the adapter (7) onto the reversible jaw (4). The
reversible jaw feet must point out (as shown) to provide the
proper pulling angle.

WARNING
When using solvents, acids, or alkaline materials for
cleaning, follow the manufacture's recommendations for
use. Wear goggles and protective clothing to reduce the
possibility of personal injury.
WARNING
Wear appropriate eye and face protection when using
compressed air. Flying debris and dirt can cause personal
injury.

Clean the camshaft and gear with solvent and dry with
compressed air.
Remove any burrs with a fine emery cloth.
CAUTION
If the area of fretting is wider than a 3 mm [1/8 inch] wide
longitudinal band, do not use the camshaft. Fretting or
damage can result in gear movement on the camshaft
nose and can cause camshaft nose failure.

Install
Note : The gear spacer plate must not prevent the
thrust plate from being flat against the block. If
necessary, trim the gasket.
Use Lubriplate™ 105 Multi Purpose Lubricant, Part Number
3163086, or equivalent. Lubricate the outside diameter of the
camshaft at the gear location.
Install the same part number key in the same orientation as the
key that was removed.
Note : Electronically Actuated Injector engines do not
use offset keys. Timing is controlled through the ECM.
WARNING
Wear protective clothing to reduce the possibility of
personal injury from burns.
CAUTION
Do not exceed the specified time or the temperature.
Damage to the gear and the gear teeth will result.
WARNING
Wear protective clothing to reduce the possibility of
personal injury from burns.
CAUTION
Allow the gear to air cool slowly. Do not use water or oil to
reduce the cooling time. This will cause the gear to crack.
