Initial Check
Inspect the camshaft gear position indicator.
Turn keyswitch OFF
Connect all components.
Make sure the pin in the camshaft gear is not missing or
damaged.

Measure
The pin is to be flush with the face of the gear within a specific
tolerance. Two measurements are taken to determine if the
sensor is located correctly. Each measurement must be taken
through the sensor hole. Determine if the flushness of the pin,
relative to front cover and gear face, is within specifications.
Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the front
cover (1) to the face of the gear (2) through the sensor hole
nearest the pin.
Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the front
cover (1) to the pin (3).
Calculate the difference between the two measurements. If the
difference is not within the specification listed below, the
sensor will need to be adjusted relative to the gear face.

Remove
Use a mallet and drift. Bend the lockplates away from the two
mounting capscrews.
Remove the capscrews and the lockplates. These capscrews
must be removed to allow clearance for the gear puller.

 WARNING 
The reversible jaw feet must point out as shown. Incorrect
placement of the feet can allow the tool to come loose
when removing the gear. Personal injury can result.

Assemble the adapter (7) onto the reversible jaw (4). The
reversible jaw feet must point out (as shown) to provide the
proper pulling angle.

Attach the puller to the gear.

Remove the gear.

Camshaft keys are available in different sizes (amount of

offset). The injection timing is controlled by:
the selection of the camshaft key
the direction of the offset key when compared to the
camshaft gear rotation
the amount of offset.

Check and record the direction of the key offset when

compared to the camshaft gear rotation (same or opposite).

Remove the key.

Remove the camshaft thrust flange.

Clean and Inspect for Reuse

 WARNING 
When using solvents, acids, or alkaline materials for
cleaning, follow the manufacture's recommendations for
use. Wear goggles and protective clothing to reduce the
possibility of personal injury.

 WARNING 
Wear appropriate eye and face protection when using
compressed air. Flying debris and dirt can cause personal
injury.

Do not use the gear if the inside diameter is damaged or

fretted in excess of a 3 mm [1/8 inch] wide band. Fretting
or damage can result in gear movement on the camshaft
nose that can cause camshaft nose failure.

Clean the camshaft and gear with solvent and dry with
compressed air.
Remove any burrs with a fine emery cloth.

If the burrs cannot be removed with emery cloth, the camshaft

gear must be replaced.

Check the keyway of the camshaft gear for burrs.

Remove any burrs with a fine emery cloth.

If the burrs cannot be removed with emery cloth, the camshaft

gear must be replaced.

Measure the inside diameter

The gear must be replaced if the inside diameter is not within

specifications.

 CAUTION 
If the area of fretting is wider than a 3 mm [1/8 inch] wide
longitudinal band, do not use the camshaft. Fretting or
damage can result in gear movement on the camshaft
nose and can cause camshaft nose failure.

Check the camshaft for fretting damage.

The camshaft must be replaced if the fretting damage is more
than 3 mm [0.125 in] wide.

Inspect the back side of the gear for cracks and chipped or
broken bosses that the camshaft position sensor reads. The
gear must be replaced if the bosses are damaged.

Install
Note : The gear spacer plate must not prevent the
thrust plate from being flat against the block. If
necessary, trim the gasket.
Use Lubriplate™ 105 Multi Purpose Lubricant, Part Number
3163086, or equivalent. Lubricate the outside diameter of the
camshaft at the gear location.

The grooves in the thrust plate must be positioned toward the

camshaft gear.

Install the thrust plate.

Camshaft keys are available in different sizes (amount of

offset). The injection timing is controlled by:
The section of the camshaft key.
The direction of the key offset when compared to the
camshaft gear rotation.
The amount of offset.

Install the same part number key in the same orientation as the
key that was removed.
Note : Electronically Actuated Injector engines do not
use offset keys. Timing is controlled through the ECM.

 WARNING 
Wear protective clothing to reduce the possibility of
personal injury from burns.

 CAUTION 
Do not exceed the specified time or the temperature.
Damage to the gear and the gear teeth will result.

Note : Do not attempt to install the gear without using

heat.
Use an oven and adjust the heat to 235°C [450°F]. Heat the
gear for a minimum of 1 hour, but no more than a maximum of
6 hours. The inside diameter of the gear will become larger
and will simplify installation of the gear on the camshaft.

 WARNING 
Wear protective clothing to reduce the possibility of
personal injury from burns.

 CAUTION 
Allow the gear to air cool slowly. Do not use water or oil to
reduce the cooling time. This will cause the gear to crack.

Note : The timing mark on the camshaft gear must be

visible from the front of the gear after it is installed on
the camshaft.
Remove the gear from the oven and install it on the camshaft.
The keyway in the gear must be aligned with the key in the
camshaft.

Install a “C-clamp” around the gear housing and the camshaft

gear to hold the gear in position as it cools. Remove the “C-
clamp” after the gear has cooled to room temperature
(approximately 10 minutes).

If necessary, rotate the crankshaft so that the holes in the

camshaft allow access to the capscrew holes in the thrust
plate.
Install the two capscrews and lock plates.

Torque Value: 45 n•m [ 33 ft-lb ]

Use a dial indicator and measure the camshaft end clearance.

Camshaft end clearance

mm in
0.15 MIN 0.006
0.33 MAX 0.013

If the clearance is too small, check the injection timing.

Machine tolerances can cause the timing to be out of

specifications.

If the end clearance is within specifications, use a hammer and

drift. Bend one tab of the lockplate over the thrust plate and the
other tab over the capscrew head. This will prevent the
capscrews from turning.
