Preliminary

A. Background
In giving ASI there are often problems, both in the technique of giving the mother and the
anatomy of the mother's breast, as well as the ability of the child to suck and oropharyngeal
anatomy of the child. Often the insufficient amount of milk is often considered a problem,
resulting in the termination of breastfeeding. Often women complain of nipple wounds, which
occur because of the wrong position and attachment of the child when breastfeeding. Under
normal circumstances, women are physiologically able to produce enough milk. Lack of
understanding and knowledge of mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding and breastfeeding
causes mothers to be easily affected and switch to bottled milk (formula milk). The health /
nutritional status of the baby / child and their survival will be better for those with lower
education. This is because a highly educated mother will have extensive knowledge and the
ability to receive higher information.
Breastfeeding is an activity that is very important for both the mother and the baby. In the
breastfeeding process there is a close and close relationship between mother and child. Of
course mothers want to be able to carry out breastfeeding activities comfortably and smoothly.
However, sometimes there are things that interfere with comfort in breastfeeding. Problems
that are often experienced by mothers in relation to breastfeeding and how to overcome them
will be presented in this discussion.

Discussion
A. Explanation of breasfeeding

Breastfeeding, also known as nursing, is the feeding of babies and young children with
milk from a woman's breast.Health professionals recommend that breastfeeding begin within
the first hour of a baby's life and continue as often and as much as the baby wants.During the
first few weeks of life babies may nurse roughly every two to three hours and the duration of
a feeding is usually ten to fifteen minutes on each breast.Older children feed less often.
Mothers may pump milk so that it can be used later when breastfeeding is not
possible.Breastfeeding has a number of benefits to both mother and baby, which infant
formula lacks.

B. Benefits of breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed, and baby will receive many benefits,
including:

1. breast milk has an ever changing blend of the right nutrients,in the right amounts, each
feed and every day

2. breast milk contains antibodies that fight infections and other factors that promote brain
and gut development

3. breast fed infants are less likely to develop ear infections, respiratory infections, allergies,
asthma, type 1 diabetes and obesity

4. the sucking action helps to develop your baby’s mouth, teeth and jaw, aiding long term
physical development

5. helping your baby to recognise when they are hungry or full

3
Breastfeeding also has benefits for mother’s health, saves money and time and protects the
environment, without the need for tins, packaging, fuel or energy resources.

C. Proper breasfeeding tecniques

1. When you touch ypur nipple to baby’s lips, baby will open his or her mouth and bring his
or her tongue out to scoop up the nipple.
2. With baby’s lips creating a seal against your breast, he or she will begin to squeeze with
gums, jaw and check muscles.
3. Your baby’s tongue will move from front to back in a wave-like motion, pressing the
nipple against the roof of his or her mounth.
4. This undulating motion will make the milk flow from your breast into his or her mouth
and will cause a swallowing reflex.
5. Watch for this pattern: such, swallow, breathe, :suck, swallow, breathe: over and over and
over again. Breathing pauses are 10-60 seconds before the next suck/ swallow sequence
begins.
D. Position of correct breastfeeding
1. The Cradle Position
a. Position your baby facing you, lying on his or her side, with baby’s tummy to your
tummy.
b. Use pillows to support baby at the level of your breast.
c. Support baby’s head and body with your forearm. To feed baby from your right
breast, support baby with your right arm. Your hand can grasp baby’s bottom or
thigh.
d. With your free hand, lift your breast from below with fingers behind the areola.
e. Touch baby’s lips to your nipple and pull baby in close for a deep latch.

2. The Side-Lying Position

a. Rest comfortably on your side, supporting your head, back and knees with pillows.
b. Lay baby on his or her side next to you and facing you.
c. Baby’s face should be level with your nipple and areola.
d. Use your free hand to support and offer the breast that is on the bottom.

4
e. Wait for a big “O” and swiftly bring baby toward the breast.

3. The Cross-Cradle Position

a. Place a pillow on your lap to raise baby to the level of your breast.
b. To feed from your right breast, hold baby along your left arm.
c. Use your left hand to support his or her head.
d. Create a “U” shape with your right hand and lift your right breast from underneath.
e. Touch baby’s lips to your nipple.
f. Wait for baby’s mouth to form a big “O” shape.
g. Latch baby onto your breast.
h. Reverse this position for the left breast.

4. The Football or Clutch Position

a. Use a pillow or two at your side to raise baby to the level of your breast.
b. Lay baby on his or her side on the pillow. He or she should be facing you.
c. Support his or her back with your forearm and make sure your hand supports baby’s
head.
d. Snuggle close to baby with your breast directly in front of his or her mouth.
e. Using your free hand, lift your breast from underneath and touch baby’s lips to your
nipple. (Opposite hand, opposite breast.)

A. Conclusion
Breastfeeding with improper techniques can cause the nipples to blister, breast milk does
not come out optimally, which affects the production of subsequent milk or the baby is
reluctant to suckle. If the baby has been breastfeeding correctly it will show signs as
follows: the baby appears calm, the baby's body is attached to the mother's stomach, the
baby is wide open, the baby's chin is attached to the mother's breast, part of the areola is in
the baby's mouth, the lower areola is enter.
In breastfeeding, there are various types of breastfeeding positions, the usual way of
breastfeeding is to sit, stand or lie down. As for special positions relating to certain
situations, such as post-Caesarean mothers. The baby is placed next to the mother's head
with the foot above. Breastfeeding of twins is done by holding a ball when breastfeeding
together, namely in the left and right breast. In the milk that is radiating (full), the baby is
placed on the mother's chest, the mother's hand holds the baby's head slightly, so that with
this position the baby does not choke.
B. Suggestions
After knowing how to breastfeed well and correctly, it is expected that midwifery
students as prospective midwives can provide counseling in the community about
breastfeeding is good and right so that nursing mothers can breastfeed their babies properly
to produce a generation of quality.
