THANKSGIVING DAY

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated in Canada, the United States,

Brazil, and some Caribbean islands. Liberia and by communities of American
immigrants in Central America and Israel. It started as a day of giving thanks for the
blessing of the harvest and the year before. Festivities with similar names take place
in Germany and Japan. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of
October in Canada and the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and
Brazil, and around the same season of the year in other places.

History
Thanksgiving prayers and special Thanksgiving ceremonies are common among
almost all cultures after the harvest and on other occasions. The story of the
Thanksgiving holiday in North America has its roots in English traditions dating back
to the Protestant Reformation. It also has aspects of a harvest festival, even though
the harvest in New England occurs long before the end of November, the date on
which the modern Thanksgiving is celebrated.
In the English tradition, the days of Thanksgiving and special services of religious
gratitude became important during the Anglican Reformation, in the reign of Henry
VIII and in reaction to the large number of religious festivities of the Catholic
calendar. Before 1536, there were 95 church holidays, plus 52 Sundays, in which
people had to attend church and quit work, and sometimes pay for expensive
celebrations. The reforms of 1536 reduced the number of festivities of the Church to
27, but some Puritans wished to eliminate completely all the festivities of the church,
including Christmas and Easter. The holidays would be replaced by specially called
days of fasting or days of thanksgiving, in response to events that the Puritans
regarded as acts of divine providence. Unexpected disasters or threats of a divine
judgment required days of fasting. Special blessings, seen as coming from God,
required days of giving thanks. For example, the days of fasting were so called
because of the drought in 1611, the floods in 1613 and the plagues of 1604 and
1622. The days of giving thanks were so called after the victory over the Spanish
army in 1588 and after the release of Queen Anne in 1705. An unusual day of annual
thanksgiving began in 1606, after the failure of the gunpowder conspiracy in 1605,
and Thanksgiving prayers and special Thanksgiving ceremonies are common

In Canada
During his last trip to these regions in 1578, Frobisher conducted a formal ceremony
in the present-day Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island (now Nunavut) to thank God; Later,
they celebrated communion in a service carried out by Minister Robert Wolfall, the
first religious service of its kind in the region.2 Years later, the tradition of the party
continued as more and more inhabitants arrived in the colonies. in Canada.3 Roast

back to the early seventeenth century, when the French arrived in New France with
explorer Samuel de Champlain and celebrated their successful harvests. The French
of the area used to have parties at the end of the harvest season and continued
celebrating during the winter, and even shared their food with the aborigines of the
region.4 As more European immigrants arrived in Canada, celebrations after a good
harvest became tradition. The Irish, Scots and Germans would also add their
customs to the festivities. Most of the American customs associated with
Thanksgiving (such as Guinea's turkey or hens from Madagascar) were incorporated
when the loyalists began to escape from the United States during the American

In the United States,

The modern tradition of Thanksgiving has its origins in the year 1623 in a celebration
in Plymouth, in the current state of Massachusetts. There is also evidence that
Spanish explorers in Texas held celebrations in the continent before in 1598, and
thanksgiving parties in the colony of Virginia.5 The feast in 1621 was celebrated in
gratitude for a good harvest. In later years, the tradition continued with civilian
leaders such as Governor William Bradford, who planned to celebrate the day and
help in 1623.6 7 8 Since at first the Plymouth colony did not have enough food to
feed half of the 102 settlers, the natives of the Wampanoag tribe helped the pilgrims
by giving them seeds and teaching them how to fish. The practice of holding a
harvest festival like this did not become a regular tradition in New England until the
late 1660s. According to the historian Jeremy Bangs, director of the Leiden American
Pilgrim Museum, the pilgrims could have been inspired by the annual Thanksgiving
services for the relief of the Siege of Leiden in.

Controversy over the origin

The site where the first Thanksgiving was held in the United States, and even on the
continent, is an object of constant debate. The writers and professors Robyn Gioia
and Michael Gannon of the University of Florida have indicated that the first
celebration of this day in what is now the United States was carried out by the
Spaniards on September 8, 1565, in what today is San Agustín, Florida.

In Brazil
In Brazil, the then President Gaspar Dutra instituted the National Thanksgiving Day,
through Law 781, of August 17, 1949, at the suggestion of Ambassador Joaquim
Nabuco. In 1966, Law 5110 established that the celebration of Thanksgiving would
take place on the fourth Thursday of November. This commemoration is celebrated
by all families with lunches and dinners. This commemoration in Portuguese is called
Día d'Ação de Graças
